WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 5 BEST DISHES AT BROOKLYN RESTAURANTS?
1.Peter Luger Steak
2.Grocery Duck
3.Lucali pizza
4.Frankie's mushroom crostini (more of a bite than a dish)
5.Bogota Steak chimichurri
Best SLICE in BoCoCA/RH
There are many great options. V&R, Vinny's, and Sal's are my favorites. South Brooklyn Pizza is great for a less traditional NYC slice. I have to disagree on World Pie, not my favorite.
Best Burger in Cobble Hill/Carroll Gardens
It's by no means a burger joint, but I really enjoy the burger at Le Petite Cafe.
Good fries Carroll Gardens or Cobble Hill?
I'm a big fan of the fries at Le Petite Cafe.
Bali Recommendations?
My wife and I just returned from our honeymoon in Bali, and Chowhound pretty much controlled our entire eating itinerary. We ate well, so thanks to everyone on this board for their recs. IMO it would be easy to eat poorly in Bali without proper guidance. We saw and ate some really bad food in our occasional gamble away from the chowhound map.
The biggest thing I learned in Bali: Avoid red meat. If you are accustomed to western red meat, you will be disappointed. I ordered it twice, went 0-2, and didn't go back for thirds.
Our faves were:
high end: For a nice evening out, we liked Sarong in Seminyak. They had a wide variety of asian dishes, and the execution was consistently good. The setting was comfortable, hip, and elegant. Tables are hard to get, so reserve in advance.
high-mid range: I'd recommend Indus in Ubud. This was the most sophisticated and complex asian food we had anywhere. The setting was nice too.
low-mid range: Head to Murni's Warong in Ubud. We played it safe and ordered their specialties. The award-winning fish specialty was hands down the best thing we ate on the whole trip. The setting is unreal. Explore the entire restaurant before you pick a table. There are 4 floors at Murni's, and each floor is different.
cheap eats: We loved Naughty Nuri's in Ubud. Even though the owner has American roots, his Balinese wife lays the groundwork for one of the most authentic dining experiences we encountered. You can eat well here for 3$ a person.
Other recs:
Kafe Warisan (Seminyak): If you're in the mood for French, this is the spot. Our food was great. Note: Fall 2009 Warisan is changing its name to Metis and moving to another part of town. I expect Metis will be just as good as Warisan.
Zanzibar (Seminyak): If you have a hankering for Western food, and you want to stroll into dinner straight from the beach at sunset, head to Zanzibar for great pizza, pasta, sandwiches, fish, etc.
Beach restaurants (Jimbaran Beach): Head to seafood row on the beach for dinner. This was the best atmosphere we found on the trip. The setting is other-worldly. Candlelit tables in the sand stretch for what seems like forever. Do not miss out on the grilled corn. Head away from the restaurants and toward the ocean and you will find a corn cart. This was the highlight of our meal. The rest of the meal was authentic and enjoyable. We've been told all of the restaurants are similar and reliable, so we assume this is true.
Ayana Beach Resort: All of the food we ate here was good. I'm pretty sure non-hotel guests can eat here, but I'm not 100%. Head to Kisik for an amazing ocean view and fresh seafood. Sami Sami was also very good.
The Beach House (Echo Beach): A great place to spend a lazy afternoon watching the surfers and enjoying a large variety of predominantly western food. Good vibes, decent food.
Worth noting:
Ary's Warung (Ubud): Our food was fine, but not as memorable as some of the other spots.
Maya Ubud Hotel (Ubud): Go downstairs to the Western restaurant for an elegent upscale dinner. The setting is memorable, and the food is perfectly fine.
Casa Luna (Ubud): Hit and miss. If you order well, you could have the best meal of your trip. If you order poorly, you could have the worst meal of your trip.
Terazo (Ubud): See Casa Luna.
Trattoria (Seminyak): We had a good meal here, but it didn't stand out.
The Living Room (Seminyak): Amazing setting with hit and miss food.
Hotel Tugu (Canggu Beach): Interesting food, cool place.
Warung Blanjong (Sanur): Low-end prices, good enough authentic food.
