Good coffee in San Diego?

i miss philz in sf - we still order their beans and have them shipped to us.... down here good places to try are bird rock coffee roasters in la jolla, ryan brothers coffee, zumbar in sorrento valley. we just buy the whole beans and do it all at home - i don't like bird rock as much as philz but 10:30am you can go to a cupping and try it for yourself. to me, bird rock has a weird "weed-like" thing going on...not as round as philz - not for me. zumbar is more blends so it's like philz, and bird rock is mostly origin, so it just depends what you like. although i love the atmosphere at pannakin - the coffee is not good. kean and cafe calabria are good but inconsistent.

Best Take-Away?

Best Take-Away?

my bf's birthday is coming up, and he seems to prefer eating at home vs a restaurant. i could cook him something, but was wondering if there were any suggestions for take away. we're in the univ city/la jolla area, but i don't mind a little drive for something good. suggestions?

Fried Ipswich clams @ Bite of Boston

ok, went in for the fried clam plate. i opened the box at home, and although i can tell the quality of the clams is good, mine were seriously underdone. they came mixed with those frozen zig zag french fries and i should've known to be worried when the fries were pale. i stuck em in the toaster oven til the fries browned and tried again, and they were ok. i found the coleslaw a little bland, but i'll try it again - i did enjoy the lobster roll i had there before. i think the food quality here is good but the preparation can be a problem - i'll let them slide because they just opened, and post back and try again.

Babycakes in SD : . Babycakes in NY?

have you had a good cupcake down here?

Babycakes in SD : . Babycakes in NY?

Curious if Babycakes in SD is related to the Babycakes in NY? Don't think it is - Babycakes in NY is a bakery that specializes in gluten free/egg free specialties, vegan but doesn't "taste vegan", Babycakes in SD is awesome cupcake shop? That's my understanding as I have not been to the one in SD, but it sounds promising

Claremont Sabrett Hot Dog Stand

Has anyone tried the Sabrett hot dog stand on Genesee and Claremont Mesa? I saw it on my way to Little Sheep Hot Pot and was curious.

Delivery in Clairemont?

Some days I'm just too lazy to go out, is there any good delivery (any type) in the University City, Clairemont area?

Have done Lorna's Italian with some success; have not had any success with Chinese, am open to other cuisines as well. Let me know!

Good Jewish Deli? Looking for Lox, Matzo Ball Soup, Rye, and Half Sour Pickles

Even though I'm Japanese, Jewish deli food is sort of a comfort food for me. Is there a Nate & Al equivalent down here? And If you're going to tell me to go to Jerry's Famous, you can go to hell.

Tapioca Express Crispy Chicken

i've tried this, but it's not quite there...

1.5 kg boneless skinless chicken thigh (Cut into bite size pieces) : Chicken thigh has better texture than breast meat but if you want, you can still use chicken breasts.
1 cup thick soy sauce
1/4 cup sweet cooking rice wine (mirin is also a good choice)
3 tablespoons white pepper
1 tablespoon Chinese five spice powder (you can find in Hua Ho, and most Asian grocery stores)
2 whole garlic clove, minced finely
3 tablespoons honey or (2 tablespoons brown sugar or white sugar)
1 teablespoon sesame oil

For Coating:
Lots of sweet potato flour (aka SWEET POTATO starch, used for the coating of chicken)

Extras:
Sweet fresh Thai basil (not the Italian Basil) for deep frying.

Instructions:

1) First of all, mix all the ingredients to marinate the chicken together first.
2) Marinate the chicken with the marinade for half an hour.
3) Heat up the oil to the right frying temperature.
4) Coat the chicken with the sweet potato starch and deep fry in small batches till golden brown, then allow them to drip on a wire net.
5) After finishing, deep fry some fresh basil leaves and serve them with the popcorn chicken.
6) Sprinkle some extra pepper or salt on the popcorn chicken while hot

Natural Casing Hot Dogs at Grocery Store?

I can never find natural casing hot dogs at a local grocery store. I'm in the LA area looking for Sabrett's or something similar. I can find Nathan's, but not the natural casing type. Suggestions?
