Help with Quebec City restaurants for a family duing Christmas
I'd look at Le Buffet de l'Antiquaire for Quebecois food. It really isn't a fancy restaurant, more like an old-school diner. It's noisy, kind of rough around the edges, but I always find it fun. It's really not expansive so even though you hate it, you can just forget about it and move on. Try the Cipaille, a traditionnal Quebecois dish made of pork and beef.
I'd steer clear of Les Anciens Canadiens, never had any enjoyable experience there. You could try booking a table at Le Lapin Sauté, a small French restaurant in the Petit-Champlain, oldest street in the city. Not a place for boisterous kids though.
For a very inexpensive and enjoyable meal, I always suggest Le Carthage Express wich serve excellent Tunisian food. Nothing fancy there but everyone will find something to their liking. Close from there, you can go down the hill to try smoked meat sandwiches at Brynd's.
Recent stay in Quebec City
Very interesting read. The name of the restaurant you were looking for is Le Pain Beni, a favorite of this forum.
I am very surprised of the attitude of the server at Conti Café. Was he really chasing customer over a bad tip. Although it seems unlikely knowing the place, it is possible. He probably lost his job after this stunt though.
Regarding Aux Anciens Canadiens, it doesn't surpise me at all. Some restaurants in the old city have not change since the 1970s, never updated the menu, never tried new things. Something some can understand as tradition is good old laziness in my opinion. Of course, those places are not the norm, but still.
Cheers.

You're welcome!
Chances are that every waiter you meet will speak English, especially since you'll probably stay in the old town. Given the importance of tourism for them, they usually do everything to give a good service.
I forgot Chez Victor on St Jean St. They serve the best hamburgers in town. Make sure to go the one in the city, there are 2 of them in Ste-Foy, a suburb you probably don't want to see. Steer clear of the vegeterian burgers, though; they are delicious but full of nuts.

IMHO, Cochon Dingue is overrated, except maybe for breakfast. The same owner also has Le Lapin Saute which is smaller and better. Le Moine Echanson on St-Jean St. is a French restaurant that is highly praised. Good wines and good food. You might want to book a reservation as it only opens at night. You might want to try Carthage Express for lunch, great North African food at very good prices.
Billig is great at least for lunch; very simple place and friendly service.
