Is there some confusion on your part about who booked your four restaurants? You told me via Email that someone had already booked three places for you so I proceeded to book the last place.

Croatia: Istrian Peninsula Trip Report

I spend half the year in Porec and I will be happy to give you ideas on Istria for your upcoming trip. A list of your interests and expectations would be best for specific answers.

Rovinj, Croatia Aqua 2 for dinner

I have not been to Aqua 2 which has hit and miss reviews. My choice for good seafood at a reasonable price would be Kantinon.

Croatian restaurant recommendations near Pula/Jezera/Losinj Island

Inside the park at Plitvice is not the place to find a decent restaurant, though there are a few open air BBQ grill options. Try Restoran Degenija in Rakovica or Bistro Marina in Korenica.
Next to Pula Arena it is worth going to Restoran Amfiteatar and I also recommend a visit to Konoba Vodnjanka in Vodnjan.
In MaliLosinj you should try Za Kantuni and in Veli Losinj go to Restoran Mol.
I have been to some of these restaurants more than once and all are well used by the locals.
Also look into the fast catamaran from Rijeka to reach Losinj.

Must-visits for foodies in Istria

Go on www.istria-gourmet.com, it's a very good website and will provide a huge number of options for you.
Of those restaurants I have recommended here in the past, I particularly like Wine Vault (Rovinj) and Le Mandrac (Volosko), also Konobas Dolina (Livade), Vodnjanka (Vodnjan) and Astarea (Brtonigla
)In Rovinj take a look at Kantinon it's just been opened by the people who run Wine Vault.
Keep in mind that prices at some Konobas can be the same as the top end restaurants and book in advance where possible in high season.

Pula - Konoba Batelina average cost?

I am giving you the top end price for Batelina and you can spend a quite a bit less there on good food. It's the value for money factor there that bugs me a little when compared to other places in Istria.
You could walk from Veruda to Stoja and eat at Milan, this would be a good upmarket choice in that area. If you are in Pula town check out the menu at Restaurant Amfiteatar located about 100m from the Coliseum, the food is good and you won't spend a small fortune.
are you going anywhere else in Croatia?

Crete in May

I replied to Crete food question and will be easy to find as I have very few posts.
Even though it is a few years old, there is a good chance that little has changed with traditional family run places.

Pula - Konoba Batelina average cost?

I have been with family to Batelina just once and we had good food on that occasion. Generally they have a good reputation but I think the overall value is not very good. You can spend €150 without wine for two people if you want to splurge there, I just feel there is better to be had elsewhere in Istria.
If you do decide to go there, then GPS woul be most helpful, the restaurant can be hard find as it sits alongside regular homes.

Foodies honeymooning in Croatia need food recs.

If I had to choose one restaurant in the whole region it would be Le Mandrac in Volosko. The chef Deniz Zembo is recognized as one of he best in Croatia and his interesting seasonal menus are a joy to experience.

Foodies honeymooning in Croatia need food recs.

Have a trawl through my previous posts on Croatian restaurants, hopefully they all still stand up. My favourites in Rovinj,

Wine Vault at Monte Mulini.

If you go to Pula, try the Amfiteatar restaurant next to the hotel of the same name, it is a new place and the food is excellent.

Croatia: Istrian Peninsula Trip Report

Thank you for taking the time to make your trip report. With things changing all the time in the restaurant trade, it's always great to get an up to date report.
I can tell you that "Cavallo" is a type of black sea bream with a more earthy taste than most other types.
I am wondering if you intended to visit my favourite restaurant, Le Mandrac? The chef is Deniz Zembo and It's in Volosko, not far from Lovran.

Best restaurant in Croatia

It's a shame that Valsabbion is no longer in business, always felt their food was aimed at higher end diners.

Crete (Palaikastro, Elounda, Agios Nikolaos) - any recommendations?

In Elounda, we have been to the Ferryman which was very good indeed.

In Ag Nik, there is KriKri on the edge of town towards Elounda.
Closer to the centre is Knossos.
Central is Embassy, Orfou To Lou and Dionysos.

All of these offer excellent traditional dishes with good local barrel wine.

What's new in Slovenia?

The only place we have been to this year is Pri Lojzetu in Zemona/Dornberk, a little off the beaten track but so worth the effort.

In Ljubljana - Pri Skofu and Gostlina Sokol, and in Radovljica, a 10 minute drive south of Bled there is Gostlina Lectar

Best restaurant in Croatia

Hi Pirate, thanks for the wonderful review. We went to Le Mandrac in July and thoroughly enjoyed the exploring menu with great matching wines (Trapan wine was one that stood out) This was our second time there, and because they consistently serve flavoursome interesting food in a beautiful setting, it is our favourite Croatian restaurant.
We have also enjoyed good food at Valsabbion, and although we are not afraid to try new things, we found it to be a little too experimental for us.
Hi Chef, we are back to Croatia in October and plan to go to Le Mandrac again, maybe even see you there.

Truffle Hunting in Istria?

I would avoid Zigante. They are all about mass production these days and even import truffles to supply demand. Unfortunately the guy we used in the past has retired but check with restaurants as they have to use properly licensed people. Maybe post on other travel sites to maximize your replies.
