Traditional Scottish meal in Glasgow?

Hi there

The airport is only 15 mins from the city centre and in a bit of a wasteland! If you're comfortable with a taxi ride to the city I'd recommend going to the west end of Glasgow to either Stravagin, the Bothy or The Ubiquitous Chip (downstairs fancy/expensive, upstairs more affordable and still yummy.

Haggis Neeps and Tatties are usually available as a starter or main course.

making haggis at home. . .

Way to make a Haggis, Jenn! You're a braver woman than me, but I bet the results were worth it. :)

making haggis at home. . .

Hey Jenn, hope your haggis came out ok! I've served haggis before with either a (store bought I'm afraid!) gravy or a whiskey/cream sauce. Gravy is my fav, especially to go with the neeps and tatties.

Simple food failures

I can't make cheese on toast, a staple here in the UK. I can make all these amazing other things, but every time, the cheese is rubbery, the toast is burned. I just make my boyfriend do it now, so I am quite happy to continue to not be good at it. :)

Pumpkin chiffon pie, anyone?

We love pumpkin chiffon pie in our family too! I'm not sure if it's a "true" chiffon pie b/c it uses whipped cream and gelatin instead of egg whites, but it tastes amazing.

My mom used to make the fanny farmer one, but my new fav is the one from epicurious... hte gingersnap and pecan crust is to die for!

Weight Watchers Foodies-what are you cooking his week? - (Old)

I live in the UK and the plan changed last week here- so far I like the change to the ProPoints. You get a weekly "play" allowance up front to use or not. Points are now calculated on protien, carbs, fat, and fibre. Not a huge change on stuff like chicken breast but big changes on purchased foods or eating out foods. Of course, now you have to buy all new materials.

Also, for those who love to bake & eat cakes- the spiced applesauce cake I made from Smitten Kitchen (I skipped the cream cheese frosting because it was so moist it didn't need, just dusted with confectioners sugar) came in on my plan manager at just 3 points per slice. Yay!

Cream Cheese Icing came out runny ! Is the cream cheese in UK different?

I've had this problem too! I guess you could always try and drain the extra water out a la yogurt cheesemaking if you want that extra effort. I recall that Delia Smith has an amazing frosting for a carrot cake on her website made out of marscapone cheese and fromage frais... it's incredible.

Glasgow for NYC foodie?

haha, I am showing my American upbringing!

Glasgow for NYC foodie?

I've always had excellent service at Crabshakk, equal to a fine dining place in the states- without any pretense though, which I prefer.

Blythswood hotel looks fab! Have a great time. There is a great cocktail bar down the street called the Blue Dog too- they do Jazz at night- may be worth checking out. On West George Street.

If you go to Crabshakk check out the Ben Nevis pub across the street for a wee dram of whiskey- they have a great selection with a nice ambiance.

marmite

I love Marmite!

Besides the toast, I have also enjoyed it with cheese on crackers or in a sandwich.

Yeah, the Chip has never disappointed me. I mentioned on anther post you can also eat in the brasserie/bistro upstairs if the main dining room is too formal/expensive for what you're looking for. That would fulfill your scottish food yen.

For Indian I would recommend either the dhabba or the dahkin on Candleriggs.

Also look into Crabshakk- almost all seafood- menu is small but they usually have some amazing specials. Place is small too so reservations are a must.

I can't think of any french or fusion places... none that I have tried yet anyway.

Hope you have a great visit!

Hi docrck

I would recommend a few places- for indian I would try Dahkin on Candleriggs in the Merchant City- Indian food unlike anything I've ever had in the states, you won't recognize anything on the menu but it all tastes amazing! The dahba down the street is owned by the same guys and has a little more ambiance if you are after that.

Try Crabshakk (reservations a must- it's tiny and you'll be sharing your elbow room for sure, be prepared) for seafood one of my favs right now.

If you're looking to sample scottish fare you can try Ubiquitous Chip (the upstairs bistro is more affordable if on a budget), Stravaggin, or Cafe Gandolfi.

Glasgow has loads of italian places, my favourite is the Italian Kitchen in the Merchant City, which can also be busy so you may want a reservation.

Finally check out Guys in the merchant city.

Enjoy your visit!

Hi TT

Happy to offer suggestions if you give a little more info what you're looking for- traditional scottish? Indian? Seafood?

That is the stuff of good MA childhoods! :)

Haggis - not so creepy after all.

Haggis gets such a bad rap but it's not that different than eating a sausage or a hot dog.

Until I moved to Scotland four years ago I was in the ewwww gross camp, then I tried it. It really is a delicious, and I've sampled it used in different preperations- and even cooked a (ready made) one myself one year for Burns Night. Considering I used to be veggie I think that's quite a conversion!

One of my fav scottish dishes is balmoral chicken- pounded chicken breasts stuffed with haggis and rolled up, served with a whiskey cream sauce. Yum.

I don't think most haggis you buy in a supermarket these days are cooked inside a sheep's stomach anymore- they're prepared in a processed casing same as a hot dog or sausage. But whenever I make it whole, I always slit the casing and eat the yummy insides anyway served over mashed potato and turnip in the traditional manner so the whole stomach or not thing isn't a problem for me. With a drizzle of gravy it's pure winter comfort food!

What is the last new recipe you tried, and how would you rate it?

I made a weight watchers cheesecake recipe and it was so terrible I put the whole thing in the bin. The crust was ground light digestive biscuits and honey. I added a bit of melted margarine thinking it wouldn't crisp without it but it was still wet and soggy. The filling had potential but couldn't really be recongized as cheesecake. Blech. A resounding failure!

The Great Boston Pastry Hunt

I used to live in Duxbury about 10 years ago- French Memories there is really darn good as I remember. I know they have expanded - they also own Cafe Vanille which I don't think is nearly as good. Their gataux in particular were amazing- debbies delight and the tess morgan were always favorties in our house. As I remember the owners are French. And it's on the way to the beach if you want to make a day trip of it!

Anyone have a good lentil recipe?

I'm loving a salad I'm making right now- 1/2 lentil and 1/2 couscous. Cook the lentils for just 15 mins until cooked, not mushy. You can use any veg you want- this week I did diced zuchini, tomato, shredded carrots, minced red onion, and diced yellow pepper. My grocery store happened to have a herb mix of cilantro, mint and chive so I minced that up and added with a splash of balsamic and olive oil. Season and yum! Healthy and filling.

What's the best way to enjoy black pudding?

I've seen it used as a topping for eggs benedict and also served on top of salads.

Where to find a selection of loose tea? Real tea, not the fruity ones

Cardullos in harvard square has a great tea selection.

Salsa Verde Question

I have heard that it works great to grill them over charcoal too. You can thread them on skewers...

Looking for a great appetizers for baby shower...

That is so funny!

While we are on the subject of questionable baby shower snacks, at a friend's baby shower they did this gross but funny thing. Melted chocolate bars served in a diaper. The mom to be had to sample the diaper and guess the type of chocolate bar. The Mr Goodbar one was the hit of the party. LOL!

Time for some new ideas about broccoli....

I chopped some up very fine the other day, sauteed with with diced chicken, mixed in goat cheese and seasoning and used it to stuff a roasted portobello. Yummy!

Frosting that is light and not too sweet?

Delia Smith has a great and delicious recipie for marscapone/fromage frais frosting from an awesome carrot cake recipie: (english measurements)

1 250g tub marscapone cheese
1 250g tub fromage frais (you can use low fat)
1 tbs sugar.

Whip together. It's so good!

Chilangos, just posted on another thread. The chile verde rolled enchiladas are amazing.

Providence--leave your warm house in the snow? For what?

OMG I love Chilango's! I used to make my friends take me there everytime I made the trip down from Boston. They have the most amazing rolled enchiladas.

Sauces to accompany fish

This is a great and inspiring thread! Enjoying all the ideas.

One of my fav sauces for preparing fish is a salsa verde- so yummy. Capers, pickles, olives, a clove of garlic, dijon mustard, green herbs like cilantro, parsley, mint all chopped together and thinned with some evoo and red wine vinegar. Yum!

My mom used to brush fish with some mayo and top with breadcrumbs and a squeeze of lemon- that is really yummy and one I have adapted with light herbed philly- which I got off the philly container!

Canned condensed milk morphs into Dulce de Leche

They call that bannofee pie in the uk- it has a cult following.
