Food and Wine Magazine Reports I am pretty sure the ranking was not based on whether or not you can find a good roti, but thats just me |

Food and Wine Magazine Reports So Food and Wine Magazine gave Vancouver the ranking of 10th best city in the world to eat. Well done and deserved. Ranking it with, Tokyo, New York, Paris, Chicago, Sydney et al. Pretty impressive class as well only Canadian city on the list. Toronto did rank 4th as a city to watch out for in the future. |

The Strange Relic called The Brave Bull's House of Steaks --- Vancouver, pics It is the Smilin Buddah Cabaret, possibly the home of punk music in Canada for sure the Pacific Northwest, as well the great album by 54-40. Too bad its gone, thank god Commodore is still open |

The Strange Relic called The Brave Bull's House of Steaks --- Vancouver, pics OK I am very familiar with both Cecils, one in Vancouver, great cheeseburgers, the one in Calgary great liquor store, Beerland, great prices and a few surprise finds |

The Strange Relic called The Brave Bull's House of Steaks --- Vancouver, pics what has the Cecil got to do with Hastings Street, the Cecil is by the Granville street bridge. Why dont you try the Balmoral or the Sunrise they are actually located on Hastings. While on the topic, the Ovaltine Cafe is not bad for something cheap and I think a great atmosphere |

Actually the core means "center", Inglewood, Kensington, 4th Street are inner city but I will give you Chinatown and Stephen Ave. |
I agree with why is this market so far out. The city wants to attract people to the DT core but what is there to do? They keep expanding further and further out, which just pulls people from the DT core, The whole Eau Claire market has turned out to be a disaster, which I understand will be torn down soon. There seems to be such a focus on malls and outside boxed malls here, how boring and uniteresting. |

Yes, from the health region, not from the restaurants themselves, my mistake. |

I find the sudden saturation of restaurants here in such a short period of time is a cause for concern. First, with lots of new money in the city, watching many people dine and the way they act you can tell they are not experienced, not all but many. Owners of restaurants take advantage of the new money, example, restaurant A offers duck at 30.00 then restaurant B offers exact dish at 34.00, then restaurant C offers exact dish at 36.00, hoping people belive the higher price the better the food. Much the same they do in many new world wine regions. There needs to be baby steps to start new trends here, too many new ideas at one time, with inexperienced owners and poorly trained collegues is cause for concern. I also belive many of these new establishments need to stop comparing themselves to restaurants in cosmopolitan cities, because Calgary is not and will never be a New York, a Paris, a Sydney, a London, a Berlin, etc. And lastly my biggest reason for enjoying a restaurant is consistency, Must be same quality food and service on a Tuesday at 9 pm as is on a Saturday at 7 pm. Have a nice day |

I believe service in many North American cities is a problem not due to lack of staffing as much as it is to the profession not being taken serious by society. Its looked at just a hostess or just a server, etc. Look at the professionalism at restaurants throughout Europe, for them to serve is a career, its a passion, its widely respected throughout. Example, even go to an Italian restaurant which has been there for years, you will see older gentleman who have served there since the beginning, the experience of that is so much more pleasurable than some .......well I wont say what type of experiences you can expect here. But you get the picture. Have a nice day |

Calgary: hand coffee grinders/mills I should have said Peter would probably know where to find one, I know they have limited selection for household equipment. My mistake |
Calgary: hand coffee grinders/mills Have you called A Touch of Italy to see what they have or call Cappuccino King and ask for Peter Izzo and ask him if he knows, he is the most knowledgeable person in Calgary as far as coffee, and espresso goes, that I am aware of |

Bistro Twenty-two, Calgary - horrible Thats funny you should mention this becasue I have been there several times, with friends in the food industry from around the world. I would say I have been there about 6 times and always been a great experience, Its too bad you had this experience, its kind of similiar to the dining experience I had at the Living Room, I ordered the halibut with a smoked tomato ragout, the waitress and the kitchen were unaware if it was Pacific or Atlantic, we order white wine which was off. We told the waitress it was off and she giggled but did not bring another bottle, food came, one of the worst entrees I have ever had, hard to describe how such a basic dish like this could be ruined. Then there was the bartender, he was at the bar with his friends while they we doing shooters with an extremely loud and anoyyind drunk women whose every third or forth word was #$%@ or *^@!*. But hey thats what friends are for. If this is the norm there, I fail to see how someone could claim this is a good restaurant. For me to complain to the manager is useless, I let the server decide how to handle things, how he/she handles a challenge will be reflected on her gratuity, |

Yes I have except for 15 East, so you have been to 4 Manhattan sushi establisments and one in Sudio City, and I would say Tojo's has the edge. So I hope that answers your question, may I ask have you been to Tojo's? Have a nice day |

From my understanding, from talking to others and experiencing him personally, John Gilchrist will give great reviews to establishments that "take care" of him, "you know that sort of thing". Anyways Crazyweed is very good, better than most meals I have experienced in Calgary |

Three Alberta restaurants make enRoute's 30 Best New Restaurants Why is this amazing, I have travelled around the world and eaten in many cities. Vancouver is up there with many of the best. As someone who was involved at a high level of the food and beverage industry I am familiar with trends and culinary and the dining cuisine and Vancouver is amonst leaders in these areas. For example there is a post here on Chowhound asking world class cities for dining and Vancouver comes up often as does Montreal, as does New York, as does Sydney as does San Francisco etc., and I don't recall seeing Calgary mentioned. Again I have eaten at several 3 star Michelin rated restaurants and have some knowledge about food. |

Calgary - Affordable Vanilla Beans? A Touch of Italy had 2 stalks for 6.95, the store is located in the same building as Il Sogno, entrance on Meredith Road |
I had lunch at Globe restaurant right at the Fairmont Airport Hotel and it was excellent |
When I was visiting Vancouver I had Mexican at Poncho's on Denman Street and I thought it was very good, excellent salsa they bring you with chips before dinner and family owned and operated |
Vagabondo to close; anywhere else for homestyle Italian in Calgary? Well I would say try Abruzzo on 8th Street and 4th Ave Sw, the yellow mediterannean style building on the corner, I have always found thier food to be very home like cooking, very tasty and good service. |

Guests coming into Calgary for a weekend Well I think you need to be less sensitive, the posting asked what restaurants they would take their friends who are coming for "a weekend" and the last time I checked weekends were only 2 days long, 3 days if it is a long weekend. To recommend 4000 restaurants would be a bit silly don't you think. OK if it makes you feel better I will add 2 more to the list Belvedere and Il Sogno. Oh and are the Creston cherries you are talking about the Lapin or Sweetheart variety |
Guests coming into Calgary for a weekend Lets hope you go on a good night, this city constantly lacks consistancy with service and food, the only 2 that I would recommend would be, are Capo and River Cafe possibly a 3rd, that being Rouge. Unfortunately some opinions on here about restaurants in Calgary are way more forgiving that they should actually be so if you go to any of these 3 you should enjoy your evening. |

Calgary - best Black Forest Cake I would have to say Nectar is the next best dessert place in the city, all ingreidents are prepared there including the cheeses and sorbets. It may be a bit expensive for some of you but worth it, check it out next time your aropund Inglewood. Oh and for the record no Black Forest cake there |
