Aqui Es Santa Fe Cafe, new Colombian place in Port Chester
we just returned from dinner at Aqui Es Santa Fe Cafe and we are now among the strong supporters of this jewel of a restaurant. The salmon special was delicious, perfectly cooked and incredibly flavorful, The Jerusalem arepa with tender chicken and mushrooms was delicious. We will be back (tomorrow night as a matter of fact) ... Please spread the word, this is a keeper and we will be back often.
Meals for Charity
Does anyone know of any restaurants that donate money or a percentage of sales to local NYC charities? It's a great time to help both the charity and the restaurant!
Cauliflower? Ummm... Yummmm!
I do the same, sort of a cauliflower mash. I carmelize onions in a curry spice and add it to the mash. Worth a try. I suppose any spices would do - depending on mood and what you're serving it with.
HELP NYE: Olana or Red Cat for dinner?
For what it's worth .... We ended up at Olana. I had been there in Oct. and thought it was quite good.
I think New Years Eve would qualify as one of the worst meals I have ever had - and that includes some very sketchy meals while traveling.
The service was absolutely awful. The best part was that it was inattentive. We ordered a bottle of wine, they poured a taste and got called away and never poured the rest of the table - not the first glass or any other glass!
I had a scallop and langoustine dish. The langoustine tasted like a mushy apple - over cooked and in edible.
I could go on, but suffice to say no one was happy. Fortunately the company was exquisite and we had a wonderful time.
I'll not be back to Olana!
Happy New Year to all
HELP NYE: Olana or Red Cat for dinner?
Should we go to Olana or Red Cat for New Years Eve Dinner? I have been to Olana and thought it was quite good, but it was a private party. Never been to Red Cat, but would like to go there as well.
TIA
Inauguration Party: Need Blue State recipes
Going to an inauguration party and I need your best Blue State recipes ... Any course, and ethnic twist, any recipe ... Should be a great night, and not just the food!
Thanks in advance
What's your "secret ingredient?"
Truffle oil ... just a little bit makes all the difference
Q in Mount Kisco now open
They absolutely did the right thing. I called and left a message for the manager. When he called back he explained they are doing a soft opening (hence no real sign or hours posted) and he remembered us and could ot have been nicer, more apologetic, etc. No excuses, just an explanation of what was going on and a truly sincere apology.
GIVE "Q" IN MT. KISCO A SUPERIOR RESTAURANT AWARD FOR DOING THE RIGHT THING WHEN A CUSTOMER HAS A LEGITIMATE COMPLAINT.
Q in Mount Kisco now open
SERVICE KINKS SEEM TO BE THE NAME OF THE GAME AT Q IN MT. KISCO.
Was told a sample platter take out order would be ready in 20 minutes (Sunday night). Ordered at 6:02 (on the register reciept) at 7:11 I asked one of the giggling young women behind the counter if they could please find the manager as the crowd waiting for take out was getting restless ... no one came to talk to any of us.
Finally got our food after 75 minutes (we were told it was coming any minute after we had been waiting 30 minutes). Still no manager. They really need to get their act together. Never got to talk to anyone. Let me tell you, the take out crowds were getting really restless. Everyone was angry and chanting the same refrain "Should We Leave or Should We Go????"
Just looking for a little truth, if the wait for take out is an hour, tell me that and let me decide if I want to wait. Don't tell me it will be 20 minutes and when I wait 30, PLEASE don't tell me it will be a few more minutes when it will really be 45 more minutes .
Won't be back for a long while
What is your favorite home baked cookie recipe?
http://smittenkitchen.com/2006/08/punishment-sandwiches/
Another Dorie Greenspan favorite: Punitions
And I quote SmittenKitchen: Punitions are a simultaneously crisp but sandy, buttery, mildly sweet, golden-edged cookie and about as far as you can get from the “punishment” they translate to.
Making Toast on a George Foreman Grill
We have a ton of bread at work (that we put out for volunteers after they've finished their shift). While I'd love to get a toaster oven, our not for profit budget can quite come up with the bucks. I have an old GF grill and thought that might work.
Any thoughts/experience on making toast with a GF?
TIA
Where are the best croissants outside of France
I don't know about THE BEST ... but there is a new place on Spring Street - between Sullivan and Thompson called Rheon. The croissants are absolutely amazing. Have a look at the following links:

I really like Candle 79.

I've heard this is good as well, although I've never eaten there:

Repurposing your cooking disasters...
I wasn't exactly feeling the cooking today ... Made veggie burgers and they were absolutely AWFUL ... Turned the rest into a veggie soup (fortunately I don't use breadcrumbs). It was good, not great and we jad it for dinner ... no waste.
Looking for neat foodie things to do w/ visiting gastronome friend from France
I would recommend RGR's LES food excursion:

If this isn't the correct site, do a search on the Manhattan board for the"LES food excursion"
"East Side Poultry"
Spit roasted, crispy and $5.19/lb. They have Turkey, Turkey breast, Capon, LI Duckling and Cornish Hens.

Any opinions on this place?

Theater District on Saturday Night
Thanks RGR ... We ended up at Dervish last night .. it was ok, nothing special.
Where have all the spoons gone .....
Has anyone else noticed that it is rare to get a spoon with your coffee in "nicer" (tablecloth) restaurants?
Just back from brunch at XO on the Hudson in Yonkers, NY. $100 for two for brunch (food was delicious, service was AWFUL at every opportunity) ... there was not a spoon to be seen when coffee was served, not at any table. Couldn't even get a wait-person's attention to ask for a spoon. Guess we were supposed to stir our coffee with the knife? Couldn't use the dessert spoon as we had already finished our desserts and the plates had been cleared (even though the wait-person asked if we wanted coffee with dessert).
Anyone else notice this?
Frodo's in Pleasantville
I know I sound like a broken record, but just had another delicious meal at Frodo's. Had the veg and blackbean cake .. a hint of indian spice in the blackbean cake and the veg (corn, stringbean, brussel sproute, carrots, lima beans, etc) were perfectly cooked (a bit of a crunch) in a demi-glaze(?) sauce that was perfect - enough liquid without being overpowering.
The Martini was good as well!
Alas, I've over cooked my mac and cheese .....
OMG.... That sounds amazing, I may just have to throw all caution to the wind (and New Years resolutions as well)!
Alas, I've over cooked my mac and cheese .....
It was the NY time recipe (with cottage cheese) and it's dry and crusty ... Love the crusty part ....
Alas, I've over cooked my mac and cheese .....
Any ideas for a "rescue" for what would have been a delicious mac and cheese had it not been over cooked?
Maybe a spoonful in some French Onion soup?
As embarrassed as I am about this tragedy, I would welcome any ideas (I've already thought of the garbage, but though I'd post here before I actually toss it).
Lima: Restaurante Rafael
I can't figure out why this amazing restaurant doesn't get the props it deserves. Just got back from 3 weeks in Peru and this was the absolute best meal of the trip if not the best we've had in many years. In addition to great food, there is a great local vibe.
Had seared scallops, crunchy shrimp tempura, goat cheese gnocchi and those were just the starters. The fish was amazing as was the lobster risotto.
We also ate at Tanta, part of the Astrid & Gaston group, great fun as was their takeaway sandwich place (forgot the name).
Need a reservation, go and enjoy!
Wobble Cafe - Ossining, NY
Actually I agree .. went wanting to like the place and felt is was mediocre. Have only tried brunch.
I'm wondering what all the praise is about.
Where in Westchester (btwn P'ville and NYC) can I order an inexpensive sheet cake for a holiday party?
I need a cake(s) for a holiday party. We'll have about 70 people at the party. Where can I get an inexpensive sheet cake?
TIA
10 cups of cubed pecan raisin rolls (amazing from Sullivan St. Bakery, NYC), any great recipes for bread pudding?
I have the most amazing pecan raisin rolls left over and have just cubed them all for bread pudding. I'm looking for a recipe that will do them justice. The rolls are from Sullivan Street Bakery in NYC (West 40's) and they are out of this world.
Please post your favorite bread pudding recipe ... or any other ideas for the leftover cubed rolls.
TIA
