Best BBQ in Hudson Valley

I like Max's, but as other poster said- Don't know if they do weddings. Great for the meal though!

leonardo's in rhinebeck - opinions?

Hi Bob,

Not really a fan. Like adegiulio, I think they are spotty- and I like consistancy. Not worth it for me to spend te money on a maybe ;) I also think they are overpriced.

I much prefer Rossi's Deli in Poughkeepsie or Joe's Italian Marketplace in Fishkill.

But, that is just my two cents.

South Hudson River Valley New York

Just a slight correction. Il Barilotto is in Fishkill. There is a good Italian place in Wappingers called Il Continori.

I liked Painters as well.

Suggestions for Lunch and Dinner in Arlington/Bennington/Manchester Vermont Area

Thanks all. Yes- we will only be spending a few hours in Manchester- but that is all. Really want the New England scene. Close enough to NYC to go there when I want that scene!

Suggestions for Lunch and Dinner in Arlington/Bennington/Manchester Vermont Area

Staying this weekend at a B&B in Arlington, Vermont. We are foodies, but don't like to spend a fortune! Any suggestions for not-to-miss places in the area for good eats. Really need just 2 lunch and 2 dinner places as we are only around for 2 nights. Boyfriend is a pescetarian. and I am a carnivore.

Have heard about :

Jonathan's Table
Southside Cafe

What are your thoughts on these? Any other great recos?

Thanks!

What's good between Fishkill and Garrison?

My pleasure.

Woodstock / Saugerties / Kingston - tired of my standbys. Any suggestions?

Agree with Elephant. Fabulous.

Best French Resto in the area is Le Canard Enchaine in Kingston! Love it!

Here is a review

http://www.mymelange.net/mymelange/2008/03/le-canard-encha.html

need a replacement for taverna dei fori imperiali in rome!

La Piazzetta (vicolo del buon consiglio, 23) is a great alternative. Same general neighborhood as Taverna. We loved Taverna...so I'll cross my fingers that you get to enjoy it!!

New Paltz Restaurants

Avoid it at all costs! The food is beyond boring and the service, even worse. Don't know how it stays in biz, really. Yuck is a word that comes to mind.

I like Aroi in Rhinebeck and Sukothai in Beacon. Can't go wrong with either.

What's good between Fishkill and Garrison?

Cold Spring is lovely and quiant. There is a French Resto there called La Boucheron as well as an excellent Italian place called Cathryns Tuscan Grill.

Fishkill is also nice. I personally think Il Barilotto is good, but is overpriced and overrated, IMHO. And service is spotty. It tends to be on the loud side. The steak house is called Sapore- gets good reviews, but I haven't been.

Excellent Indian food in Fishkill at Tanjore! This is the place that got me hooked on Indian food!

Cibo on Main St is good for a quick bite- mostly Italian menu- CIA grad. Casual.

Also in FIshkill is Joe's Italian Marketplace. Great for take-out, subs, eggplant parm and pastas.

There is a Cuban place in Fishkill Babalou Bob's and Cabana-Latin Puerto Rican food. Again, have not been, but heard good things.

Beacon also has a few nice spots.
If you like Thai Food- there is Sukothai. Brothers Trattoria is a great Italian spot.

Enjoy the HV!

Ordering in Paris

FIrst, learn hello, goodbye and thank you in French- it will serve you well. Ask nicely in French if your waiter speaks English. A good establishment should be able to offer some help as long as you are respectful.

Here are a few links. The first 2 are books and the last is a document. You may find these helpful to translate when you get there.

Ice Cream and Crepes - August in Paris

I know it isn't technically *ice cream*, but Pozetto in the Marais is great. As well as Amorino gelato, which has branches all over the city.

Here is a link about Pozzetto.

Alternative to C.I.A. in Hyde Park?

So sorry you had THAT bad of an experience. I think they rely on their nameat this point. If they were not the CIA- I think they'd be out of business. And it is so unfortunate!

Dining in Florence

Went to Florence with a veggie. We loved Il Latinti. Also try Cantinetta Antinori and Cafe Verrazzano- both excellent wine bars in Florence. We also liked Trattoria Antellesi and for pizza try Il Pizzaiuolo. He was able to eat at all of these with no problems!

Some Paris questions

I have been to neither Le Cinq or Pre Catalan, but my very good friend is a Parisian born foodie and gourmond who teaches cooking classes and she RAVES about Pre Catalan. And I'd follow her advice all the way to the bank!

Just my two cents.....

Rome - Is this a good mix?

Agree with other poster about Pizzarium! Also, I like I Franchi for lunch near Vatican- no place to sit though- you can stand at tables-but food is good!

For dinners,

If you mean La Taverna dei Fori Imperiali- then YES, I highly recommend that one.

If you'll be in/near Monti- also try La Piazzetta and Cavour 313- an excellent wine bar that serves great food!

Alternative to C.I.A. in Hyde Park?

Great! I hope you love it as much as we do! SO many great, and inexpensive places in our area.

vegetarian, poughkeepsie area, sunday night

Oh, Puerta Azul is one of my favorite Mexican places in the area. So sorry you weren't that impressed. They have a to die for brunch on Sundays -everything under $12 and they bring a basket of freshly made muffins, croissant and corn breads. Yum!

Anniversary Rec in Hudson Valley?

I'll seocnd adegiulios recos. I'll add Le Canard Enchaine, an excellent and authentic French Bistro in Kingston.

I have been to Twist and is not going to be a place for a non- meat eater.

Busy Bee Cafe is a great spot, right in Poughkeepsie. Small, cozy- nice atmosphere.

Enjoy!

Mercato in Red Hook, NY

It is my favorite Italian in the area- hands down! Ane I am a local and a native of the area! I have rezzies on Friday for my birthday dinner with friends! It used to be just a small panini shop in town and we became very friendly with the owners.

I also travel to Italy frequently and this place is what an authentic Italian Trattoria/Ostera is in Italy.

It's the real deal!

Here is a review I did when they first opened the new place.

http://www.mymelange.net/mymelange/2007/09/mercato-osteria.html

vegetarian, poughkeepsie area, sunday night

Hi!

My other half is a veggie and we live near Vassar. Aroma is a shadow of what it once was. They rest on their nice locale and grapes dangling from the terrace out back. I find the prices totally overblown.

Hands down the BEST Indian I have eaten is Tanjore- but not the Rhinebeck location- the Fishkill location. They are the same owners, but for since the Fishkill location is the original, it is much better! They also have the Sunday buffet, but they may close early, like 3pm on Sunday.

Just came back from a wonderful dinner at a Thai place in Rhinebeck, Aroi. Nice, simple decor and excellent prices for Rhinebeck.

Another great Thai option is Sukothai in Beacon.

For italian, we also frequent Il Continori in Wappingers.

And not to be overlooked- right across from Vassar is the Beechtree.

We have eaten at Kabab Palace- but ONLY for take-out. Service stinks and the decor is disturbing!

Enjoy!

Alternative to C.I.A. in Hyde Park?

I live in the area and am a foodie. First, let me say that I feel that the CIA is a bit overated. So many of their graduate chefs stay in this area and open wonderful places of their own. We are blessed that way here in the HV!

Il Barilotto is good, but it is very pricey. Don't know what your budget is.

If it is Italian you are looking for, Mercato located in Red Hook is authentic trat food. Convival atmosphere and all dishes are made from fresh, local ingedients. Not romantic- more of a fun place with great food.

Here is a review- http://www.mymelange.net/mymelange/2007/09/mercato-osteria.html

Also, Il Continori is another Itaian fav located in Wappingers Falls. Awesome Wed night 3 course prix-fixe is $18.95!

Another review http://www.mymelange.net/mymelange/2008/02/il-continori.html

Great Thai place in Rhinebeck called Aroi. Simple, inexpensive.

For French- you can't go wrong with Le Petit Bistro also in Rhinebeck.

I live within walking distance of Busy Bee. It is also a great place.

I have been to Twist and Artists Palate- of the 2, I'd pick Twist, though they would come after my above-mentioned recos.

Good luck and have a great time!

Rome Recs for low-key "foodies"

I love Roman wine bars.

Cul de Sac, near the Pizza Navona and Cavour 313 on via Cavour in Monti(behind the colosseo) are two favs. Excellent wine and food. Try to score a table outside at Cul de Sac.

Also in the Monti neighborhood are two great trattorias - La Taverna dei Fori Imperiali and La Piazzetta.

Near the Pantheon, we liked Armondo al Pantheon.

Also near the Pantheon, head to Tazza D'oro for a wonderful espresso granita con panna. To die for!

Near the Vatican, try I Franchi. Not an official sit down place- but authentic Italian food and tables where you can stand and eat.

And don't forget to eat your weight in Pizza al Taglio or Pizza Bianca. You'll find great spots all over the city.

Here is some of what to expect on the Pizza al Taglio along with recommendations.

http://www.mymelange.net/mymelange/2009/06/pizza-al-taglio.html

Have a wonderful trip!

Filet au Poivre in Paris+ More Questions

For a lite bite- I usually head to a wine bar. Great wine and usually inexpensive, quality food- without all the fuss and 3 course meal.

Willi's Wine Bar is a good option
http://www.williswinebar.com/

La Crémerie in the 6th is another fav.
http://www.mymelange.net/mymelange/2008/06/la-crémerie.html

L'ecluse has several locations around the city. I have been to the one on Grand-Augustins, which has a great view of Notre-Dame at night- and they usualy have a plat du jour on offer.

And my fav is Taverne Henri IV on the beautiful Pont Neuf at Place Dauphine. It is steps away from the Vedettes du Pont-Neuf, if you are into taking a Seine cruise.
http://www.mymelange.net/mymelange/2008/09/travel-tip-tuesday-best-of-paris.html

And believe it or not, I had a great steak au poivre at a little bistro inside the famous St. Ouen Flea Market. The name escapes me now, though.

Enjoy!

A Week in Paris - Restaurant Recommendations

I noticed Chez Janou on your list- and i would totally reco it. We had a wonderful meal there in 2007. Great, authentic, and very reasonable prices- as we always travel on a budget. And in general, most places offer a prix fixe menu which allows you to eat lunch for a lower price than dinner. That is how we can afford to eat at those *great* places when we eat in Paris- we go for lunch!

Enjoy your trip!

Best Chocolat Chaud - Paris

I love the authentic French hot chocolate at a little place on the I'sle Saint-Louis called la Charlotte de l'isle. Delicious, thick and in such a small, cute setting in one of the loveliest spots in Paris. Make it a sugar overload and stop at Berthiliion on the way there or back! You can find some photos of the place, cups of the chocolate and a link to the website here http://bit.ly/4nya4
