Student in central london
I'm staying near king's cross at the YHA and am looking for some delicious cheap (for london anyways) eats that I can access either on foot or easily by public transport. Indian, European, British, whatever. I just don't eat pork and I don't drink (though neither bother me as long as I'm not consuming it!)
I've never been to london at all, I'm not sure where to start it is rather overwhelming. I'm from Montreal.
Alternatives to Piment Rouge???

Montreal restaurant recommendations (vegan-friendly)
and you're right, the lunch special at crudessence seems like an OK deal. just don't sit in the place on mackay in the evening, pay full price, in an empty dining room with too many tables.
Montreal restaurant recommendations (vegan-friendly)
Lola Rossa has so much potential. it's adorable, those little notes, the decor, good location, you want it to be good! but then it's not . And they won't do anything about it because it's packed with university students/hipsters that have more disposable income than you'd think, and some employees of the university. they get line-ups. to be fair the place is small..but I shake my head every time.
Vienna, Budapest, Munich, Salzburg cheap eats
I'm looking for some delicious, affordable fare in Vienna, Budapest, Munich, Salzburg if anyone is familiar with the food scene in those cities. Does Budapest have good Turkish food as well as Hungarian? As for Munich/Salzburg, is there more than the traditional Bavarian fare (which is yummy, but may get old)? And Vienna..what is delicious, affordable, accessible without a car, and not a cafe/pastry shop:)
DAMASCUS eats
I'm looking for some great food in Damascus. A combination of cheap eats and maybe a few nicer places :) I'm there for 3 months this summer.
also, as much as I love syrian/lebanese food I do tire of it sometimes..are there other cuisines that are decent? I love Turkish and Persian, especially ,but maybe I'll also crave some European food sometimes.
maybe there is indian/sri-lankan food with all the foreign workers?
I'll also be visiting Beirut, Aleppo, and stopping over in amman on my way out

Ehhhhhhh Crudessence just pisses me off. you pay 20$+tip for raw lettuce on a dried out almond pattie or whatever. their om burger is pretty good but at 14$..it's just frustrating. the raw vegan 'sushi' is kind of interesting but kind of bland and pasty. DONT GET the crepes type thing--it is seriously worse than anything you could make at home but for 15$. and you willbe starving and the smoothies are like 8$ or something ridiculous.
I like Aux Vivres, though! I LIKE vegan food. it's just crudessence..urgh
Aux Vivres..get the rice bowl, or the vietnamese-type sandwich:)
lots of indian restaurants (south indian) do vegan well too.
lola rossa is terrible TBH. overpriced homestyle food that is pretty boring and just..could be better. and although they;re vegetarian ive heard of MANY people with bad experiences trying to get something vegan

how about Crepes from Crepes a Go-go?
Kvass in Montreal
went by saturday, it is still there. don't know if they carry kvass though:)
APDC Cabane à sucre 2010
I'm shocked at how popular it was for it to fill up so fast... I mean the place is neither cheap nor particularly close to town. Maybe they are just processing reservations...:)
Anyone been to Toque lately?
anyone tried their lunch offerings? starts at 25$ a plate. sadly nothing inspires me much in it right now..had their tasting menu once, several years ago, was wonderful, but can't afford that anytime soon...
Good restaurants downtown Montreal around McGill
Le Taj is not so good in my opinion--- if you want indian in the city it's park ex or death haha. but downtown there is thali next to concordia's saint-mathieu exist, and an 11.95 or so generous lunch special table d'hote at devi on crescent(better than le taj, IMO, but not exceptional, some sauces are too sweet--the place takes itself seriously, and the service is good, but I would never pay the dinner prices for the food). buffets..I just can't, I honestly. but you may disagree.
M:Brgr is just OK, and the price/quality ratio is bad...I've been to too many birthday parties there, and I wouldn't personally go there for lunch. Try Buns (ste-cath), picks (next to thali), or le gourmet burger (on bishop I think). there is another burger place on mcgill college, but I haven't heard anything about it. a whole new burger joint is opening on sherbrooke in front of mcgill sometime soon, though.
Vasco de Gama is wonderful.
1st date scramble
you can always try calling back the day of, if case there were no shows or cancellations. or try a later reservation? or beg? but that might get you a bad table. I've never had issues getting 9pm reservations calling 2-3 hrs in advance, but I see that I was just lucky...
I really like casa tapas and I've done walk-ins there, I think I may even like it better than Tapeo in a way. It is also closer to the centre of the city. good luck:)
Good restaurants downtown Montreal around McGill
this is a depressing affair, the area directly around McGill is not so interesting food-wise, except for the mediocre pricey business lunch places...
I usually always walk further west to the concordia area (10 minute walk or a few minutes on the 24), or bus up on parc on the 80.
if I'm too lazy, there is the Korean resto on University called Atti - it's not maison bulgogi, but they have a pretty ok/sometimes rather good table d'hote for 10-11$ (you get the main plate, kimchi, 2 other appetizers and a soup). get the bulgogi on rice, or bibimap. mostly business people and korean mcgill students.
lola rosa is disappointing usually, overpriced and mediocore.
amelio's pizza (the white pizza) is good if you like that kind of pizza (thick, topping heavy).
akli, in the food court underneath the scotia bank on sherbooke has good shawarma.
mccord is clearly the best quality food next to mcgill.
but consider the walk to the concordia area, there a bunch of threads with restos around there. :)
good luck..let me know if you find out about any other places, I'm always on the lookout.
Good cheap snack/restaurant recommendations?
fire is solved, the place was up and running a couple days after I had walked by! Thankfully!!!:)
best roti and jerk chicken?
Caraibe Delite report:
went there for lunch today, had a delicious dal soup (not like indian dal, this is different and honestly more complex in flavours and so yummy) and a wonderful goat roti (the dough is sort of like crepe but a bit thicker). Everything served piping hot, adorable service. Very lovely, but the place was all empty for some reason. Perhaps the construction on Parc? I don't know, but it should have more visitors. Yum.
* I've had their jerk chicken in the past, it is nice, but I'd recommend a roti over it!
came to 11.95 taxes included.

Restaurant Openings in 2011
in the fall there were two of these italian restos, now one has become gourmet burger, the other is still open, next to the queue de castor
La Maison du Nord pork sandwich
I don't mind contacts with pork, but always try to ask about the dish containing any pork when ordering...have a friend taste it, and though there have been a couple "accident" over the year, I've been managing! I'm not allergic, thankfully. Thanks for clarifying about the sandwich!:)
Restaurant Openings in 2011
Ah, I don't know the chain. How are they? their website doesn't inspire me much I must say but I can't taste the burger from a picture :P
BEST OF 2010
walked by antep kebab for a fix today, they had just had a fire before I got there, place was evacuated, etc.. Not sure when it will reopen...
La Maison du Nord pork sandwich
do they have non pork sandwiches? Is it worth heading there if I don't eat pork? thanks:)
Restaurant Openings in 2011
the bad pasta place in front of McGill on Sherbooke (Pasta Basta) is closed, it is being replaced by a burger place. I don't remember the name, it has burger in the name. Anyone know details? Maybe there will be ok food next to McGill now? Queue de castor is also opening another store next door.
Best pizza in MTL
Ended up going to Prato twice this week. I'm usually a Bottega fan, but other people chose the place and I remembered Prato as being pretty decent a couple years ago. First evening we were just three, had the margheritas as usual, they were good enough (nothing exceptional but good enough for montreal). Service was crabby and really disappointing though. Left a good tip as usual. Returned a few days after with a group, restaurant mostly empty but no one to greet us until we went up to the counter after a while to say we had a reservation and were seated in the back (a bit depressing with tacky posters etc. but since we were a group not a huge deal...)
The service was abysmal though. Really really slow, one waiter for the whole group, no smiles or words even, just a "order now" look from whom I think might be an owner? Took forever to get the food and we were never told to pay at the counter after so that took awhile again. The menu says they charge 20% tip automatically on groups of 12+, we were not 12 but they did it anyway and didn't mention they had (gave a bill with no details on it just the final price at counter).I wouldn't have paid 20% had they not imposed it, but didn't want to argue (though what was only a couple dollars difference for me was a big difference for the whole table, but whatever). The "owner" (or whomever the older man was) still had a terrible attitude and even turned his back on us and kept grunting.
Otherwise...didn't get water refilled or anything during dinner even when asked...
I had the margherita again, it was pretty similar to the other night. Those who had more complicated toppings didn't like their pizzas much though (which were rather more expensive).
Anyway, not going back, I felt the whole thing was quite unprofessional.

Montrealer visiting Toronto for first time!
Just flew back in. Before I get to the food, wow Toronto! I'd never been (bought into that whole Toronto sucks thing), but I was really impressed. Montrealers often joke (and shouldn't) that Quebec City is a "village" but really Montreal seems like one next to Toronto! Very lively, diverse, wonderful place. And the wonderful food...
So, my first lunch was at Craft burger that I walked by. I had the burger called "the craft" or something, it was good ,messy, juicy, cheap. Yum. That night we went to Guu, there was an hour wait but it was absolutely worth it. Great fun, great japanese 'tapas' style food (we loved the slightly seared tuna especially), and the atmosphere was really something. Super affordable too. The only thing is that their cocktails barely tasted like they had alcohol in them, but no biggie.
The next day, I headed to Chinatown and had lunch at Mother's Dumplings. We have a comparable place (though with a less nice interior, less tables, etc. and worse service:P) in Montreal. Dumplings were very good (had the lamb steamed ones), but of course would have been more fun if I hadn't been alone and could have sampled more. Good food, ok service, my dumplings were a bit expensive for the (5) I got but whatever! Yum. Chinatown in Toronto was really impressive. I tried a new (chinese) bakery that had just opened up that same day, it was just OK but ridiculously cheap. I went shopping on Queen st. West (and went far west) and stopped by some cafe on for espresso and couldn't believe just HOW MANY independent cafes there were. How do they stay open???? There were 4-5 a block sometimes! Nice change from the starbucks all over the city.
For dinner that night I went to the ONE restaurant at the hazelton, had some good duck confit, and a delicious dessert (mint chocolate millefeuille and a wonderful scoop of mint ice cream).
Great ingredient quality, prices were high as expected. Went back for lunch today before my flight, yummie mini burgers/mushrooms sides, pretty terrible apple salad though.
The next day, went for breakfast/lunch at Crepes a Gogo- shared the cote d'azur (goat cheese) and a sweet cinammon ones, delicious. Atmosphere was rather kitsch but I didn't mind. Their limonata is really tasty, they are selling it all over town these days it seems. Perhaps I can make some myself. Then for dinner we headed to Libretto. Great margheitas, really perfect. Had them with the more expensive buffalo mozzarella, not sure how it compared to the regular one. The dough was thin, perfectly cooked, and the tomato sauce really made the pizza IMO. Similar to Bottega pizza in Montreal, though slightly better because a) the crust was thinner/a bit more cooked and thus less "doughy" and filling b) lower prices, better atmosphere, location etc.
Tried their gelato, the chocolate was OK but the vanilla (real vanilla bean) was superb. Yum.
And thank you for time & recs everyone you made it a much better foodie trip! I am coming back soon so many more places to try, couldn't eat it all in a few days.
