Help me out with my Specialty Produce Farmer's Market Box

Exactly! That's the big plus factor for "bags or boxes" from places like this or CSAs - trying new things you wouldn't normally buy or order when out. I finally came to terms with beets and brussel sprouts. ;)

Help me out with my Specialty Produce Farmer's Market Box

I, too, rarely get the Farmers Market bag from Specialty Produce. I used to get it every week. We had the same experience - often the greens were of the "use today or forget it" quality, and that doesn't fly in our household. I did find that it made me try more veggies that I normally wouldn't buy. I love the Seaport oils, vinegars, and salts, the fresh pasta, some of the sausages, and some of the sweets, but those are "occasionally buy" items for us. I'm not a fan of Sadie Rose bread, and quit getting the seafood when I got bay scallops too many weeks in a row. I get my eggs from a local farmer, so I didn't even try the eggs.

Solana Beach/Del Mar Eats

The Hillcrest Farmer's Market is worth it, but get there early. Parking, later in the day, is a nightmare. You're looking at a good 40-mile roundtrip from Solana Beach to Hillcrest. There are farmers markets closer to where you're staying. Check here: http://sdfarmbureau.org/BuyLocal/Farm...

For casual brunch, I recommend Claire's on Cedros.

What do you like there, ipse? I've been to the one in Monterey Park and wasn't impressed.

List some of your fave lunch spots. .

My daughter and I had a lovely lunch of small plates at The Hake yesterday. Hamachi Tartare, Shaved Rib Eye (came with caramelized onions), Jicama Turnovers, and Ceviche.

Cucumber water was refreshing after a day at the Birch Aquarium. We'll definitely keep this in our rotation.

New Mariscos truck in University Heights.

Agreed. I would see a truck up there often when I was still working, and that was last year.

Atlanta Chef Richard Blais Opening "Juniper & Ivy" in February

Is it bad that my first thought on reviewing the menu is "I hope they imported the 'ocean water' in which they cook their potatoes"?

Still anxious to try this spot, based on everything else I've seen from Blaise.

I don't get one every week, but I've come to love the flavored balsamic vinegars and olive oils from Seaport. You can never go wrong with Spring Hill's organic butter - it's delicious!

Source for ORGANIC Sourdough bread?

Charlie's site says they use organic ingredients:

I can't tell you if it's good because I make my own. :)

Best grilled fish?

Thanks! It's been years since I've been to El Pescador, but she asked about it.

Best grilled fish?

A friend and I share a birthday, and always celebrate with lunch out. She's a pescatarian, and expressed an interest in good grilled fish. We would prefer someplace less casual than Blue Water, and I was thinking The Fishery, El Pescador, Fish Public, or Spike Africa's (I heard their fish was good).

Thoughts?

A Room with a View

I ate at Sea 180 shortly after they opened. In fact, they were still working on the hotel. It's okay. The food is typical of most Cohn restaurants. The hotel was quite nice, but, having lived in IB back in the day, I'm having a hard time seeing it as a destination for many tourists wanting more upscale digs.

February Dish of the Month - CHOCOLATE

I've always been partial to their almond square. Dark almonds, however, are pretty darned good. Nuts & Chews FTW!

I need to put in a good word for Elegant Truffle in Point Loma. Though I love the sea salt caramels from Eclipse, the caramel squares here are transcendent. Big enough to quarter and share, and worth every penny.

Yes, all of the referenced caramels are chocolate-covered, to keep it in the DOM category.

San Diego CLOSED Restaurants: Thread Three- The Saga Continues.

Ah, I didn't know that. I guess that's how they're "preparing" for any Phil's fans who might head east. The place already varies from fairly busy to very busy, so this should be interesting.

I have yet to venture there; in fact, I haven't been to Phil's since they were in Mission HIlls!

The local rag said they expected the Phil's crowd to surge east to Santee.

Yeah, I don't really see that happening, but what do I know?

Atlanta Chef Richard Blais Opening "Juniper & Ivy" in February

Personally, I'm excited to see this open. Blais was one of my favorites when I watched Top Chef (before it jumped the proverbial shark). While I think molecular gastronomy can be fun, I hope it's not the focus of this new restaurant.

How often do you dine out, how often do you cook etc ?

It was good! I believe the owner said her family recipes came out of Texas, but don't quote me. It's been many years since they closed. I remember my first time there, asking the owner if they had rib tips. "Honey", she said, "I can make you any kind of rib pieces you want." All served with white Wonder bread.

And, I might add, it was the first place I'd ever had sweet potato pie.

I remember R & M Barbeque when they used to be off Imperial. They actually offered spaghetti as a side, but not with barbeque sauce. It was mixed with one of the spiciest sauces I've ever had on pasta.

But I'm fairly certain they didn't grill it. :)

Late Night in La Mesa

Hope all is okay with your mom. My daughter was in there the beginning of November for a week, but only got food the last two days she was there. They've definitely improved the food!

Pho Super Bowl on Jackson and Parkway is open until 10pm during the week. Decent pho and good weather for it.

Help me find great food outside of Mission Valley!

It would help to know in which part of Mission Valley you'll be staying. I worked close to the Marriott, and there are some decent places within walking distance. You'll also be close to the trolley. However, if you're staying in "hotel row" along Camino del Rio South, that's a different selection (and not that close to a trolley stop).

Potential REAL butcher shop in San DIego

I thought SD Public Market closed their farmers market because of construction, and it would reopen - along with much more - after construction is done.
