Liberty Station food hall getting closer

I must have reached my "ten articles a month" limit with the UT because I can't view the article and refuse to subscribe. However, I had two thoughts: if they advertise and have a solid buy-in from the "gourmet purveyors", they'll probably do well. Unlike SD Public Market, the location, parking, and existing consumers are already established.

Totally agree on both of these. The Elegant Truffle makes THE best caramels I've ever had. They put them in cute little boxes for gifts.

Azucar for tasty and unique pastries.

mamaof3, I see you're coming from San Francisco. For that reason, I'm going to second DoctorChow's rec of Puesto. The food and service are good, and the location gives you some beautiful walks and scenery.

Diners. Not the fancy ones, not the "dives" either. Grits and eggs.

That's a shame about Rudford's. I frequented that place when I lived in Banker's Hill. Many early mornings and late nights spent over some decent chow.

We like Izzy's Cafe in El Cajon. Open for breakfast and lunch only except for a couple of nights a week. Yes, they have grits. It's a little place by Sharp in EC. Don't sneeze, or you'll miss it.

I, too, am way out in East County and agree that Foodland and Kaelin's are lacking. Good for some things; others, not so much. The trek to Northgate is worth it.

I understand this is a sister restaurant to Sakura, and located in the same strip mall. Has anyone been, and, if so, what did you think? I find the combination of Italian-Japanese to be.....interesting.

Flour in SD

You can also use a combination of a good multigrain flour with the King Arthur Organic High Gluten flour to make your own blend of multigrain bread flour. That takes a bit of experimentation, but I really like KA flours.

Flour in SD

I've found Sprouts to be sporadic in the types of flours they carry. That said, I've found Bob's Red Mill Unbleached Whole Wheat bread flour at the Sprouts in Santee.

I usually order my multigrain flours, and also use the bread flour Costco carries (when I make tartine sourdough loaves).

85°C Degrees Bakery ...

Stopped in there today, and, though the line was long to pay, it went fast. I think they've found their groove. I liked the fact that they had "crowd control" for pastry selection. It was a freakin' zoo inside, but fairly smooth considering. The pastries are pretty good, and I like that they had various breads from which to choose. I'd give an edge to Paris Bakery on the sweet stuff.

Ototo Sushi Co.

Went today for lunch, and really liked this little place. Spicy edamame was much less greasy than at other places, very fresh fish, and good ginger pork. I found the Ototo roll - tuna, crab, yellowtail, salmon & avocado wrapped in cucumber and no rice - a bit difficult to eat, but it was delicious. Iced green tea was exceptionally good, and service was attentive without hovering. Next time, I want to try their small plates.

Cucina Basilico

We stopped in here last night after a trip to Fry's, and were pleasantly surprised. Homemade gnocchi? Yes, please! Pantera Rosa sauce with pancetta was delicious, and the DH really liked his lasagne. They were slammed, and our bruschetta order was overlooked, but the bread with olive oil was filling enough. They comped our chianti, which I thought was a nice gesture. And honkman, you were spot on when you said the tiramisu was "one of the best in SD". It looked big (it comes in a bowl) but was light enough for us to split. So good! We'll definitely go back.

Anybody like meatloaf?

Thanks! He does a fine job with prime rib roast - so much so that we can't really order it out anymore - as well as turkey and jerky. Just never thought about smoking meatloaf.

On the topic of restaurant meatloaf, a friend recently recommended ordering the meatloaf sandwich at the Big Front Door. I must say, I've always been partial to next-day meatloaf sandwiches over just-out-of-the-oven meatloaf.

The Belly Up -- When Should I Be There?

Not sure why honkman would think Tears For Fears couldn't be classified as rock-star-status. These guys still pack 'em in. The concert is sold out.

Go early for a good seat, unless you've reserved something in the upper loft. I'd be there by 6pm for an 8pm show.

The food - to keep this "food related" - is okay, but there are better places close by. Enjoy the show - they put on a good one!

I can tell you it gets busy on Saturday nights! Between the piano bar and the diners, it was fairly packed when we were there last month. Very old school, including the racy paintings in the bar. ;)

DD, the last time we ate at Bully's, we swore we wouldn't go back for prime rib. The prime rib bits at the bar, yes, but we were very disappointed with the prime rib itself. Mind you, it's been about 4 years since we were last there, and it could have been a bad night for them.

Love them for happy hour, but probably won't go back for a meal.

Ever since the DH started smoking meat at home, nothing from a restaurant quite measures up to his prime rib roast. However, Red Tracton's does a pretty good job.

Albie's is good. We were just there last month, and it's about $25.00 for the prime rib.

Now we'll have to try Fiddler's!

Vintana Wine + Dine (Escondido) patio "small plates"

I met friends here last Friday - we were there for the band - and I must say the venue is much nicer than I expected. Someone said the view is better than you think, and they're absolutely correct. And again, I can't say enough about the service at Cohn restaurants. Their food is not swoon-worthy, but my experience is that they're consistent. Valet parking is complimentary. A very nice patio for drinks and apps at sunset.

Who's familiar with 'old' San Diego restaurants?

La Bella's has changed, but mostly to accommodate the newer diners. I think the restaurant will always be "family-oriented", but it stands to reason they would do their best to bring in a broader customer base. You don't stick around for nearly 60 years without, for lack of better terms, staying relevant.

That said, I was there was late last year, and the pizza is just as good as it's always been.
