That depends - are you looking to dine close to the college or close to PB? Upscale or more casual?

4th and Main in CV. It's a large field on the southwest corner. Take Main Street off-ramp, and you can't miss it. It's about a mile east of the freeway on your right. Beautiful ripe berries! They usually close around 4pm, but sometimes earlier if they run out.

The one in CV is on my weekly rotation - right after I hit the strawberry fields close by for the best berries in town. That's always my favourite day of the week.

Fah-Kay Nah-May boo-tay? Sorry - couldn't resist.
Beach Chick, I've been to a few places that do sliders but can't recall any of them being non-commodity beef (wait - but you'll eat the ones at Longhorn??? I'm so confused......). A few places even offered them with grilled onions. If you can deal with no rye (I agree with RBHound - can't be patty melt unless it's on rye), then all you'd need is some thousand island dressing and you're good to go.
Personally, I'd just cut the Longhorn patty melt into quarters and pretend they're sliders. ;-)

I've used these folks twice now, to rave reviews. We opted for chicken and beef, but supplied our own beans and rice. They have all the taco fixins and salsa was excellent. I don't know if they do natural/organic meat.

I do believe you're correct, hye. The chef at SEL2 formerly worked at four-star hotels in Thailand, and thus the slightly different items on their menu.

Second Punjab, Mike. Our team from Bangalore told us about it when they were here in October, and I've been there about half a dozen times now. Always very good, always fresh, and service is usually quite good (but I did have "quirky" service once!).

The location formerly known as La Trattora in Santee is now Okawa Steak House & Sushi, and we decided to give it a go tonight. While I was (and still am) very sorry to see La Trattoria close its doors, this new spot is a welcome addition to our little corner of the county. They cook hibachi (read Benihana's, Shogun), if you like, but also accommodate non-hibachi diners with tables and, of course, the sushi bar. With the hibachi meals you get "hibachi soup", salad, veggies, noodles, shrimp and steamed rice. Should you desire fried rice, it's a couple of dollars extra. The soup was peppery-good deliciousness, and a great starter to the meal. The salad was nothing special, but the dressing was pretty gingery (which I loved). While we stuck with the standard steamed rice, the chef gave us a taste of the fried rice, since it was our first time there. Normally I reserve fried rice for a quick home dinner, but this stuff was good! My hubby ordered the samurai steak, which was cooked perfectly to medium-rare and delicious (I stole a bite). I had the pineapple calamari, also perfectly cooked (it was a test - I hate when they cook it to a rubbery consistency). Our daughter stuck with sushi rolls - the vegetable roll (avocado, cucumber, gobo, radish & sprouts) and the Morning After Roll (baked shrimp, asparagus, avocado, cucumber & soy paper), and really liked both of them. Presentation of the rolls was beautiful. All in all, a nice addition to the dearth of good restaurants in Santee. We'll be going back.

Thank you all for your insight and recommendations! I'm more of a red wine gal myself, so your input is very much appreciated.

I was in Horton Plaza today and noticed Napa Valley Grille is closed. In fact, there were several empty storefronts - more than I've ever seen there before. Sign of the times.

I was showing off our city to a friend who recently relocated to San Diego, and we decided to try the ramen for lunch. I liked it very much, with the broth being very rich without too much saltiness (a problem I've experienced with other ramens). My friend is Chinese, but spent time in Japan, grew up in NYC, and lived in Portland, OR., so I was anxious to hear his reaction. He puts it on par with good ramen he's had in NY and Portland, and said it was "almost as good as the best ramen he had in Japan."
Nice setup inside, though you can tell it's not quite "finished", decor-wise. Very friendly staff, and iced tea and rice are complimentary at lunch. A very nice addition to Convoy!

I was pretty certain of that, since I'm up there about once a week. However, you never know when those things will pop up. ;-)

I don't think there's a Starbuck's in the Nijiya lot. Actually the one referred to is on Convoy and Raytheon.

I know you like food, Uncle Lefty. And since you turned us on to Sab E Lee, I have great expectations of you. Keep 'em coming but DO post the Buttonwillow hot spots on the old board, okay? ;-)

A friend is new to wine drinking, and has found she rather likes Riesling that's a bit on the sweeter side. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance!

I like the Napa/Sonoma idea, and, if you needed beach time, you could spend some time at a rental in Sea Ranch (Gualala). The proximity to Napa and SF is both convenient and a beautiful drive. There are some great little restaurants en route both directions.

We've had our eye on that one, too. Hopefully, it works and doesn't go unnoticed (if it's good) like La Trattoria. It's just nice not to have far to go for a good meal! By the way, if you haven't tried Nam Long yet (by Round Table), don't bother. We were beyond unimpressed.

Oh, but isn't it nice we have those types of choices now, Cathy? :)

Try Oishii on Mast, in the strip mall anchored by Domino's and a dry cleaners. It's our favourite sushi place in Santee. Mike will make you what you want if he has it, and I do believe they usually have ahi and uni.

Oggi's in MV is still open but the Little Fish Market is gone, replaced by a mediocre Mexican restaurant.

Second Super Cocina. While SC won't offer much in the way of ambiance, it would certainly fit your requirement for really great Mexican at a good price.
Just up the hill from Mission Valley are two good possibilities: El Comal (http://www.elcomalsd.com) and Cantina Mayahuel (http://www.cantinamayahuel.com).

The television isn't on all the time. I'm fairly certain they turned it on because it was the weekend, and those were playoff games.

Another wonderful experience at Sab E Lee 2 last night. We took a friend of our daughter's along, who had never had Thai food before. While she ordered "safe" with the Orange Chicken, we did get her to try a few of the other dishes. And I must say, all other Orange Chicken dishes pale in comparison to theirs! My DH ordered the Garlic Fish which was the hit of the night. The chef definitely knows how to prepare fish! Nice, light fry on the outside and fork-tender on the inside. And the sauce - well, let's just say if manners didn't preclude it, I would have licked the plate. I ordered the Curry Roma which consisted of crab and scallop tucked into dumplings with a mild green curry sauce. So good! We also tried the ahi spring rolls - like an egg roll with lightly seared ahi then sliced into bite-sized pieces. Very, very good but my daughter and I just can't keep away from the fresh spring rolls. We order them every time.
We're so warmly greeted upon arrival and departure. They truly appreciate the business, and take such pride in what they do. It's truly a San Diego gem. Another nice note: though we were the only diners there upon arrival, there were more than half the tables occupied when we left.

Well, it's official - we've become weekly regulars, and I can't tell you how grateful I am to have such fantastic dining spot so close! Based on Kirk's blog, the DH and I both ordered the three-flavor fish (I had halibut, he had catfish), and I was pretty sure I'd reached Nirvana. The kids ordered orange chicken, tom yum gai, and the duck curry. We also split the papaya salad, the rest of which will be my lunch today. I can't praise the three-flavor fish enough, and the tom yum gai had the perfect balance of lime and lemongrass (both of which, when not balanced, have ruined this soup for me in other locations). The papaya salad wound up coming to our table late, which is why it didn't get devoured, but it's the best version I've ever had.
We're warmly welcomed when we arrive, and everyone bids us farewell when we leave. It was also nice to see four other tables occupied when we left. Keep 'em busy, folks - I know we will!
