Good Indian Restaurant in San Diego

I work with many Indians, both here in SD and LA. The majority of them do cook at home and bring lunch from home, especially if they're new to the U.S. Most are vegetarians, and often unsure/wary of how restaurants prepare their food.

San Diego and Carlsbad area dining recs, have a list but is it a start?

You may want to visit People's Food in Ocean Beach for the raw ingredients. I think it's the closest you'll find to the markets you mentioned.

Old Gulf Coast Space?

Sorry - should have tried the link prior to posting.

any good restaurants in North Park of San Diego?

On the contrary - it's a booming area. I'd urge you to do a search on the board. You'll turn up many results for North Park dining.

Old Gulf Coast Space?

A Google search turned up this little exchange:

I drove by there the other day, and wondered the same thing.

Kaito Sushi-Solo Omakase?

Morita-san has obliged us with omakase for two and not our third person, per her request, with no problem. I don't see why he wouldn't do the same for you and your wife. And, to reiterate what was posted below, he may try to get your wife to push her limits and try some new things. I never cared for giant clam or octopus until dining at Kaito. It's truly an experience, and I hope you both enjoy it as much as we have. Happy Birthday!

Food Trucks at UTC

Seems the food court at UTC is closed until December, and the food trucks are making the rounds here to fill in the gap.

Who knew there was a Patty Melt truck - and that it was Deborah Scott's?

Who makes the best bread in SD?

For the farmer's market bags, Specialty Produce switched to Sadie Rose from Bread on Market when the latter closed. We've tried about five offerings, and we were very disappointed in all of them. I second the rosemary & olive oil loaf from LaBrea (mentiioned below) suggest the Lemon Pugliese from Bread & Cie, and Charlie's has several wonderful options (like Gorgonzola Walnut).

Simply Fruits Ice Cream

I found myself in Serra Mesa at lunch today, craving something healthy to kick this cold I managed to catch. I saw a sign touting ice cream, fruit salad, smoothies, shaved ice, etc., and turned into the mall at Sandrock and Greyling (anchored by a CVS). This little shop is closer to Greyling, looks newish, and it was spotless inside. Their menu is on a board on the wall, and I saw they had fruit salads, tostilocos, fruit waters, shaved ice, smoothies, malts - alot from which to choose. I ordered the regular size fruit salad, and it was as good as the one I had at Fruitlandia. Freshly cut fruit, cottage cheese, granola, coconut, and raisins with the honey in a container on the side (which I loved, since I usually have to ask them to go light on the honey other places). They had several flavors of ice cream in the front case, and I asked what brand they stocked. Thrifty brand! It's a little, independent, mom-and-pop shop, so if you find yourself in the neighborhood, give them a try.

San Diego New Places Opening

My daughter works at the Hillcrest location, and you must have hit the tail-end of the salted caramel stint! Normally the smaller locations carry 4 flavors at all times - chocolate, original tart, then the two rotation flavors (now PB and watermelon). I hadn't heard that about FV offering up 6 flavors. I think my personal yogarista (love that, btw!) might have kept that from me so I wouldn't venture there instead!

San Diego New Places Opening

Salted caramel WAS good - it's been replaced by peanut butter as part of their rotation. I believe the FV store is opening around the end of this month.

The King is dead. Eighteen year old boys no longer rule

Haha - I wondered the same thing! I would have never known of it if I didn't have such kinky friends.

As far as the king goes, I say good riddance.

Bourdain vs. Deen

Love your post, and we're on the same page. Surely Paula Deen realizes that her fans won't be deterred by Bourdain's comments. Surely Tony realizes he's going to get under the skin of one of the Ray/Lee/Deen/Fieri bunch enough to get negative reactions. It keeps their names in the news and rallies the hardcore fans - and it sells more cookware and books, I suppose.

I've been a Bourdain fan since reading Kitchen Confidential, but occasionally I roll my eyes at his snarkiness. I've never seen Paula Deen's show, but I admire her because of what she did to go from a single mother of two kids to what she is today. I've seen some of her recipes, and they're just not my style of cooking. To each their own.

And I'm 99.9% sure he drank all those bottles of vodka!

Need recommendations for Chinese, Korean, Italian, Taiwanese, Japanese etc within 20+ mins of Legoland

Good suggestion, but, if you go, get there when they open. The place is fairly small, and fills up quick.

Permanent market for local farmers?

I don't know what's involved with securing a spot here, but what about the Farmer's Market at 2121 Imperial?

Love Letter to San Diego

Great report!

Imperial Beach -- near bike path

Honestly, there are only a couple of places I can recommend in IB. It's a bastion of fast-food chains and taco shops, but there are two I've been to that are pretty good. The Olive Oil Organic Cafe is inland a bit on Palm Avenue around Carolina St., and they make some good sandwiches. You could also try The Wave Cafe on Seacoast Drive, which is fairly generic but the food is decent and the service is good. If you're out and about early and want to do some carb-loading, try the Stardust Donut Shop right on the 75 as you're leaving IB. The guys that own the place open early and don't seem to have a consistent closing time, but they make the best cinnamon rolls.

Lemon Thyme

Yep, that's what I did - bought a plant. Very easy to grow, and it's so good on so many things!

Food trucks in SD...where are they?

Thought you all might want to know about this event:

Food trucks from SD, OC, and LA. Combine this with the coffee event at Kyocera on the same day for a full day of food and drink!

Top Chef All-Stars - Ep. #16 (FINAL Finale Pt. 4) - 03/30/11 (Spoilers)

And once again, Linda, you do the most awesome job of recapping the show. Thank you again for a wonderful season!

Top Chef All-Stars - Ep. #16 (FINAL Finale Pt. 4) - 03/30/11 (Spoilers)

ME, TOO! It's the Blais Dance of Victory. Wooohoooo!!

Top Chef All-Stars - Ep. #15 (Finale Pt. 3) - 03/23/11 (Spoilers)

Geez, Linda - your recap skills are amazing. No wonder you were asked to recap the NCAA games, too! Hahaha!

I was so sorry to see Antonia go. She is so very talented, and wanted this win so badly. I do have to agree, however, with whoever stated above that Mike will make for a more interesting finale. Good guy/bad guy, you know. And, while I hate to admit it, Mike has definitely stepped up his game. I was much more impressed with his dishes this season than in his original season. But I'm still very much rooting for Richard to take it all.

Food trucks in SD...where are they?

I still love those things. Every now and then I'll stop and get a couple. I have no idea what the allure is, but I, too, have been enjoying them since I was a kid. No authenticity whatsoever - they almost need their own category.

Who's familiar with 'old' San Diego restaurants?

I know Pete moved his family down here from L.A. in the 60's.

Who's familiar with 'old' San Diego restaurants?

Spot on, Josh. I'd forgotten El Patio. We didn't go out for Mexican food much, as my Nana had Mexican nationals who worked at her cafe. Why go out for it when they would bring the most wonderful food from home to share? No one would remember Miller's Cafe anymore, but that was hers. When we did go out, we'd head for El Juan's. I think it was the flying saucers. :)

Who's familiar with 'old' San Diego restaurants?

Yep - El Juan's was one of those places offering a "flying saucer". Makes me laugh now.

Who's familiar with 'old' San Diego restaurants?

Wow. I hadn't read that. They (the city of CV) really wanted to do something spectacular with the bayside development down there, and I remember this place called Shangri-la that opened up at the end of what I think was E Street. It just didn't get the business. So they brought in Anthony's, an already established restaurant in the county. It flourished for many years, but a friend told me recently they weren't getting near the business of the other Anthony's in SD. All the "bay" business went into the marina at the end of J Street, and I think most people even forgot Anthony's was there.

Who's familiar with 'old' San Diego restaurants?

Yep, verified with a friend this morning - Carnation was on Ohio and ECB.

Best Local Strawberries in SD

Yeah, she said they'd probably be open all this week but was unsure if they'd have enough to last through the weekend. I really must remember to get a number so I can call ahead!

Who's familiar with 'old' San Diego restaurants?

The website actually says "since 1949". DD, I'm pretty sure the Carnation place used to be about a block or so.........east, I think.
