Cinnamon Ice Cream

I put the vanilla in when the cinnamon goes in...also, I never strain the mixture nor do I make an ice bath. I just put the mixture in the fridge for a while to cool down.

What cookbooks have you bought lately, or are you lusting after? Happy early summer, June 2015 edition! [Old]

I received both The Italian Slow Cooker and The Mediterranean Slow Cooker by Michele Scicolone. I loved just reading them but tonight I made a Chocolate Truffle cake (from the Italian book) and will be serving it tomorrow for fathers day. I am about to start a Red Lentil soup (from the Mediterranean book) for dinner tomorrow so it can cook overnight.

In the AM, I am going to start a Beef Stew (she claims it is Greek because there is vinegar and cinnamon in it; it is from the Mediterranean book as well). I might even make it with the Herbed Polenta from her Mediterranean book. I sort of got obsessed with Med type foods with the Ottolenghi books I bought.

My dad is going to have a heavy duty dinner for Father's Dad with tons of leftovers for the week!

Wish me luck and if it comes out even remotely ok, I might post pictures. It's my fist huge meal, all from scratch, in months and months (and to think, its all slow cooker cooking).

I actually bought Jerusalem on EBay for $14 with shipping. It was barely used if at all!

Slow Cooker Beef Stew

If I were to add some cubed up potatoes to this, when would I add them so they dont turn to mush?

If you find a New Orleans cookbook that looks good, please post and let us all know. I am looking for a good one also. My best meal ever was in NOLA at Atchafalaya. OMG. So good.

I did not even receive Ottolenghis The Cookbook and I broke down and ordered Jerusalem last night when I saw it on ebay for $10.

Today, I finally received a used copy of Barefoot Contessa in the mail so that will be my reading for tonight.

I love when I travel to Charleston and have some traditional, southern meals there. I always take a cooking class for fun during our stay. I love her blog and her style. I'm not a huge fan though of Charleston Receipts.

I haven't cooked much at all this month and last but sure did read a lot of cookbooks and cooking magazines (love Louisiana Cookin' Magazine).

I borrowed Ottolenghi's The Cookbook after getting 'annoyed' with hearing his name over and over and over (always thinking, seriously, what's the big deal). Well, I read it last night and ordered it today. Then, maybe a little over-excited with the 2 authors and reading the reviews, I decided I needed Jerusalem. So...tonight's 'project is to find a 'well priced', used copy of Jerusalem this evening.

I did buy Barefoot Contessa last week based on her chicken recipe alone and it should arrive in a few days.

I really want to buy Mamma Agata's cookbook (based on all the previous chatter here about it) but cannot quite afford it with all my other cooking purchases. Anyone have a suggestion where to buy a less costly used copy?

Lastly, I bought and read through Deep South Dish: Homestyle Southern Recipes in a moment of extreme hunger watching QVC. I never had chicken and dumplings before but that dish alone 'made' me order the cookbook from Amazon (it was less costly there than on QVC).

Ina Garten's Perfect Roasted Chicken

laliz:
One of the very few things I cook VERY well is turkey meatloaf. Its simple and omg so delicious. It takes me about 5 minutes to prepare and cook time is about 50 minutes. I never eat it the day I make it unless I cannot control myself (the next day is obviously 100 times better). I just finished eating one tonight that I first made 2 days ago (I had it almost every meal in some variation). I promise you that no one makes a better turkey meatloaf than me (in my opinion). I think Ina herself would agree.

What cookbook is this recipe from? I have the recipe but am looking for her book where she first posted it.

Also, what is her best cookbook in your opinion?

KBBQ recommendations please!

I just watched Andrew Zimmern eat here: New Won Jo. The owners own 2 restaurants on the same street. Check more info about it here - http://andrewzimmern.com/2013/12/09/n...

Pescatore & Pete's Tavern

I know its after New Years but I have to disagree about Petes. I was there 2 weeks ago and had an excellent Chicken Francese. Their chicken cacittore is also so yummy. I also love their prime rib special. Their garlic mashed potatoes are really super yummy. The veal Parmesan is also incredible. TGIF is disgusting and Pete's is FAR from TGIF quality or taste.

Getting uncooked prime rib shipped?

Master Purveyors is the best. They are in the Bronx. They ship any quantity. I would NOT order from Omaha steaks. Lobels and Pat LaFrieda are also good options. I dont think ANY good butcher who ships precooks meat.

Classic Macaroni and Cheese

Sounds like a bechamel issue. Are you heating the milk before adding to the roux and whisking constantly?

Classic Macaroni and Cheese

I used 8 oz of american cheese. I added salt only to the pasta. I did not use pec romano. Easiest recipe ever and OMG, it is the best mac n cheese I ever ate in my life. SERIOUSLY, its that good.

Asian grocery stores in NY with a good variety of packaged ramens?

I am responding to my own post to spread my knowledge after finding what I wanted. Here is my new go-to Asian grocery store-ramen store list:

New York Mart -128 Mott Street
H Mart in k-town, 32 W 32 street - between 5th ave and Broadway.
Pearl River - Broadway bet Broome and Grande
New Chinatown Supermarket -109 East Broadway corner Pike and E Bdway
M2M Market on 55 3rd Ave near East 11th Street
Sunrise Market - 4 Stuyvesant Street bet 11 and 12 street
Kam Man Food - 200 Canal St. (My fav and has an area where they serve hot food with tons of really great housewares & dishes on the bottom floor)
Asia Market Corp - 71 1/2 Mulberry St (Malaysian foods and doesn't look like much from the front but its pretty good and very close to Kam Man Food)

Chowfind: An authentic tasting 'Instant' Singapore Laksa Noodle La Mien good enough for Chowhounders!

As I posted just now in another thread.....Found the 4 pack of Prima Taste in Laksa LaMien and also Curry version. Both came in 4 packs. Both were 9.95 at two stores I went to. The selection at Kam Man Food on 200 Canal Street in Chinatown (NYC) was astounding. (I also found the 4 pack of just the Laksa LaMien at Asia Market Corp on Mulberry Street. Asia Market Corp also had Indomie noodles which are rated very high). I now have an awesome 'go to' place that also has a bar area that serves hot food! I spoke to the manager and he was awesome. Thanks ChowHounds!!!!

Hakkasan

Winly on Ave U.

I am just comparing the taste not the exact entrees.

I did have lobster in black bean sauce yesterday at Winly. 1 lobster was 14.95. It was incredible. I had a curried lobster in Las Vegas's Hakasan. It was good but I would not order it if I went again. The lobster in black bean sauce though at Winly was beyond fantastic. We also had roast pork pan fried noodles. Unreal. Did not have that dish in Las Vegas but in Brooklyn, it is my 'go to' dish because it is just that good. I think that dish is about 9 dollars. We also had chicken and corn soup for the table. Its always perfect. In Las Vegas we had a pumpkin soup. To me, it was good. Would order again but definitely not an asian soup. We had so much soup at the restaurant but still, we brought close to a quart home. It was about 6 dollars. Thus, I am not comparing my meal dish to dish but rather taste and price.

Hakkasan

The Hakasan in Las Vegas wasnt bad...it just wasnt worth it. I had chinese food in Brooklyn today that was about 30 bucks for 3 people. It was a feast. It was far and above much more tasty than the food at Hakasan.
