Small Baked Goods for Dessert Buffet

Hi, I'm in Irvine (near John Wayne airport) looking for a bakery where I can buy a lot of very small desserts to put together a dessert buffet for approximately 75 people. It would be great if I could have a selection of cakes as well as things like fruit tarts, or perhaps tiramisu in little cups. I have a budget of a few hundred to work with. Ideally, the bakery could be near my office but I could go to Costa Mesa, or further south into Irvine, or through Tustin and Orange too.

One of my coworkers has already suggested Assal Pastry in Irvine, on Culver but told me it was not cheap so any other recommendations would be great.

Thanks so much!

Has Anyone Tried the Persian Restaurant Across from PCC?

I tried heidar baba awhile back. I ordered one of the more traditional persian dishes: zeresh polo. barberry mixed in with basmati rice, grilled tomato, chicken and grilled onion. it was very very similar to a kebab plate i would normally order elsewhere with the exception of the barberry, which reminded me of dried cranberries, only smaller and softer (less chewy and dried). in taste, it was tart/sweet. boyfriend ordered filet kabobs.

i guess the best way to explain it is that it was just not memorable nor did it make us want to return. although we always dream of raffi's rice and their koobideh, i don't ever think about heidar baba twice.

Can I appease a vegetarian & someone on Atkins?

Thanks for the suggestions. Ended up at Mediterranean Cafe on Del Mar and Colorado and friend got the mujaddarah. He said it was a different preparation than he was used to, but I snuck a bite and thought it was tasty but I have nothing to compare to.

Also with Vaya Con Carne and Monku's thai suggestions in mind, I also hit up Saladang Song for dinner, better known for it's nice outdoor seating area, but its pad see iew was actually QUITE tasty! =)

Thanks again.

Can I appease a vegetarian & someone on Atkins?

This is a lunch, and I can travel a bit..South Pas, Eagle Rock, but San Gabriel/Arcadia are probably a bit far for a quick bite.

Random Pricing at Scoops

There is even a sign or it might be written on the menu that refills cost $x amount. That guy was RUDE! Sorry you had a bad experience.

TNFNS winner! spoiler

It combined a lot of already-tried concepts: Tyler Florence's Food 911 (rescuing recipes), Sara Moulten used to get on the phone with callers who had questions about recipes, and yes, Ask Aida is the exact same thing.

Pasadena breakfast/brunch

Their tuna salad sandwich, steak sandwich and cobb salad are all very good. Their mint iced tea tasted like water last time. It is a small restaurant and can get very busy so be prepared for a short wait.

Foo Foo Tei--Down The Tubes?

I was last there possibly two months ago but stopped when I realized they had severely reduced its menu. Instead of serving dozens of different kinds of ramen, they only offer the 10 or so "most popular," none of which I liked so much. I can't recall whether they took off all the other side dishes or not. In their defense, they offered to make me a mabo-ramen when I found out about the menu reduction but I don't expect that to happen again.

Ice Pan

i thought pretty tasty and novel but not memorable enough to make me want to go back. my friend got a chocolate banana icecream mixture made from soy milk and i remember that tasted pretty good. the texture was a bit off, probably because it was thin, chopped up pieces of icecream piled/mashed together. it lacked the creaminess i'm used to. it was also pricey.

Is there such a thing as "Healthy" Cup o Noodles??

Check out Chinese grocery stores. There are packages of instant noodles that are marked as "Not fried" and "No MSG" (in English). I can't recall any particular brands off the top of my head, but I know they exist because I've purchased them in the past. They tend to be the kind of noodles you find in wonton noodle soup.

Or, you can get packages of udon noodles, available in the refrigerator case of Chinese or Japanese markets & sometimes in just-add hot water bowls too. Those are healthier as well b/c the noodles are not fried.

Long Beach: Trachts or Da Vinci or L'Opera

Hi,

My company is hosting a large dinner event in Long Beach and I was considering Tracht's, Da Vinci, and L'Opera as the venue.

I'm fairly comfortable with any one of the above restaurants for food selection but I was wondering if anyone had opinions as to which would be more ideal as to semiprivate/private rooms, parking situation, views, overall atmosphere.

The party will be for approx 100 people.

TIA.

Sweet Potato Fries in The OC?

I thought Veggie Grill's were very tasty as well. Very light and crips and non-oily. However, my friend ordered the chili fries with the sweet potato fries and the proportion was off. Way too much fry, way too little chili (plus, the chili was all bean and little liquid so it was overall a dry dish).

Also, the Counter just opened up in OC somewhere and I recall they serve sweet potato fries as well. Never tried though!

AYCE Hot Pot/Shabu Shabu: Still Exist?

Does anyone know whether the one on the 2nd floor of the Focus Plaza in San Gabriel still exists? It was AYCE, and I think it was something like $7 for lunch, but this was maybe 3 years ago.

casual, interesting date place w/ potential for a quiet walk afterward

If you dine at any of the restaurants on Lake Ave. in Pasadena (e.g. Smitty's, Magnolia, Green Street Restaurant) you can walk around Caltech's campus afterwards. There are a few ponds with turtles, fish & frogs that are fun to poke around.

Hope your date goes well.

PB Cupcakes In Orange County

Thanks for the recommendations so far. I've come to terms with the $3/pop price tag, alas.

I still would prefer to avoid Sprinkles because they only permit you to order the flavors of the day of pickup, even if you are ordering in advance.

Thanks so much!

PB Cupcakes In Orange County

I'm looking for chocolate PB cupcakes in Orange County (Fullerton or Irvine) for a birthday. I'm trying really hard to avoid Sprinkles in Corona Del Mar at $3 a pop but it seems to be the only place that might have that flavor combination.

French's has already told me they do not make PB cupcakes. If anyone has recommendations in the Fullerton/Yorba Linda area or Irvine near John Wayne, I would really appreciate it!

Indian Wells, Dinner for 100 [moved from L.A. board]

Does anyone have any suggestions for a restaurant near Indian Wells or Palm Desert to hold a dinner for approximately 70-100 people? I'm looking for a venue where I can reserve a private room and that serves fairly classic American food (no ethnic, sorry). Last year, my company had it at LG's steakhouse and it was great - we used the room with a fire place/pit in the center but it's always nice to explore other options.

Thank you all!

C&O in MDR?

NEVER EVER order the house bottle of chianti. It's not worth the obscene price tag that's something like $80 per bottle. It's what they offer everyone as they start singing "That's Amore" and toasting everyone.

mangosteen available in LA yet?

I saw them available for $10.99/lb in packages of maybe 4-5 at the Arcadia Supermarket
645 W. DUARTE RD. ARCADIA. CA. 91007 on Sunday 1/28/08.

That's one of a chain of the Guang Hua (sp?) supermarkets in the SGV so you might want to check the other ones out too.
