In response to Rachel Ray thread

I would have to assume that this thread is about Columbia and I can't even recognize the town I have lived in for twenty five years from the comments you have leveled about it. We have so many restaurants outside of the mainstream chain type restaurants that I could not even list them here. Indian, Thai, Sushi, Korean BBQ, Vietnamese and so on. Try this place for cheese...I kind of doubt you can buy your Cracker Barrel there.

http://www.worldsfoods.com/aboutus.asp

I have an Oriental grocery store with walking distance of my house where I go to get my ingredients to make authentic pad thai when the mood strikes me and I don't feel a bit of xenophobia while shopping in a store where nobody looks like me. This slamming of the Midwest gets so old. We don't live in a vacuum nor do we live on McDonalds hamburgers.

What's your favorite brand of....

For luxury chocolates, my favorite is Christopher Elbow. We order one box around Christmas each year and cut each piece in half so that we get to try some of each one.

8oz Coke

It also bugs me too that until recently, they were still using 12 oz bottles in their advertising. Please tell me where I can get a 12 oz bottle of Coke other than at my local Mexican food grocery store.

8oz Coke

The size is right and now if they would make them with sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup, I would be on top of the world!

Dehydrator has arrived- got questions/looks cheesy... [Moved from General Topics board]

I gave up on mine because of the noise problem but at the time, I did not have a basement like I do now. If I ever get another one, it is going to the far corner of the basement when it is used (probably when not used as well!)

Aramark office cafeteria food

I always kind of wished we had a cafeteria but maybe now I'm glad that we only have a vending machine and a microwave. One of our local banks actually hired a gourmet chef to cook for the employees as one of their employment perks. I know I'm working at the wrong place.

Anyone know the name of this movie?

That kind of reminds me of the Who Wants to be the Next Food Network TV Star show.

The Village Baker

I bought my copy for around $35.00 somewhere on-line (don't remember where) because I had read so much good press about it but I don't think I have even used it yet. I guess once I got it and started looking through the recipes, they didn't really grab me. Definitely try interlibrary loan before you put your money down.

Garbage bowl at Kohl's

I guess I never put much thought into this subject before but I suppose I tend to collect my garbage in a dish that I have already used somewhere along the line in the cooking process so that I don't have to dirty up another one. If that doesn't exist, I just grab a big bowl out of the cupboard that I probably bought at the dollar store.

Restaurant review

Thanks a lot-I appreciate it. Very interesting reading.

Restaurant review

I would like to have read this review but it appears to vanished from this site unless my searching skills are not very good which could certainly be the case.

Help me find these mints!!!

Are you talking about Russell Stover Rosebud mints? They came in a box in pastel colors and each one had a little rosebud on the top. I thought these had been discontinued years ago but the FAQ on the website says they can be special ordered from retail locations.

fundraising with food!

Yes, agreed on the pancake suppers. They have gotten pretty gruesome around here. The last one I attended, they just pulled the stacked up plates of precooked cakes out of some kind of a warmer sitting behind the counter. There was no telling where or how long ago those pancakes had been cooked. They were inedible. That was my last pancake donation.

Fast Food Pet Peeve: breaded potatoes and fries

I am with you and it is one of my major pet peeves as well. Not that I have any need to be eating french fries these days but I so hate the starchy coating. They almost all do it around here except McDonalds. Probably better for me in long run anyway because I refuse to eat the coated ones.

McDonald's fried apple pie [Moved from L.A. board]

Sad to say, it looks like that web page has not been updated since 2003 unless I'm looking at it wrong. I love those apple pies and am going to start looking in the Wal-Marts around here. All it says for Missouri is various locations. Guess it is up to me to find those locations!!

Why all the anti-Cheesecake Factory vitriol???

"Lesson learned: everyone's got an opinion and some are sillier than others." As usual, I'm coming to the discussion late but I don't really understand what this is supposed to mean. The OP did solicit opinions, negative and positive I believe from rereading the post. And, I cannot give an opinion on CF just as I can't give an opinion on the TGI Fridays, Bennigans, and Houlihans that have opened in our area in the past few years. We have limited dining out dollars to go around and my personal preference is to spend those dollars at the local places with ties to our community. That is my opinion and I don't find it any sillier than those people who enjoy eating at chain restaurants.

He tipped me $2.03.

One of these sites (don't recall the name) was actually posting the names and credit card numbers of bad tippers a couple of years ago. I don't know if it is still going on but it is no wonder people have charges show up unexpectedly on their credit cards when stuff like that goes on.

Walking out

I can recall leaving a place at breakfast one time. They opened at 9:00 and we were waiting when the doors opened. Our server gave us coffee and told us that the breakfast chef had just arrived and was getting the grill warmed up. At 9:30, the grill was still being warmed up so my husband had some kind of discussion with the server out of my earshot and we moved on.

TCBY White Chocolate Mousse... God's concoction?

We have not had a TCBY in our town for about six or seven years but I used to bring home gallons of that stuff. I was crazy about it and I'm jealous that you all can still get it.

What do you do when you know a customer IS wrong....it happens

I'm sorry you have to put up with this Rob from some of your customers and I have witnessed it myself. I used to have a friend who took pride in all the free meals she could get by complaining after the fact about the food. I guess you have to learn to figure out who has a valid complaint and who is out to abuse the system like my ex-friend but I'm sure it is easier said than done.

Waitering tips?

Along the refill line, if you can't recall what kind of soda I was drinking, please don't say "Was that a diet soda?" just because I'm fat. If you can't recall, please ask me. Making that kind of assumption will make me testy.

Thanksgiving Success Stories - Pls share yours

I am not normally a cheesecake fan but years ago, I think it was Bon Appetit (or was it Gourmet) had a recipe for Chocolate Amaretto cheesecake that was a huge success. It tasted far enough removed from cheesecake that even I liked it. If you are interested, I can try and find the link. I'm thinking Bon Appetit for some reason and in the timeframe of the early nineties.

Culvers: Minnesota and Wisconsin hamburger and custard chain

I guess I'm not a huge fan of their burgers either. They seem to be kind of heavy and greasy to me.

Anything NEGATIVE about Per Se?

Thanks-I searched a couple of different ways and it didn't come up for me.

Anything NEGATIVE about Per Se?

Did you start the post? For some reason, I cannot locate it.

Regional Cakes

St. Louis is famous for the gooey butter cake but I think Paula Deen has a recipe for it as well.

Transporting deviled eggs?

In response to the picture posted by Gordon:

Wow, those look good! So much better than the deviled eggs brought to our last office party. I could only detect Miracle Whip and sugar in the yolks. Next year, I am taking over the deviled eggs!

Thanksgiving Success Stories - Pls share yours

Thanks for the thread! Our days of family Thanksgiving dinners are pretty much over but we did have a small meal with my dad which was a huge success because any holiday that he is still around to celebrate with us is a blessing.

What's your favorite Thanksgiving food-related TV episode?

I'm dating myself but the Bob Newhart show when Emily left Bob alone with his friends and they all got wasted and ordered tons of Chinese food takeout. It was great tv.

Log On

That seemed to work. Thanks!
