Jim Dorsch's Profile

Linchpin white IPA

we are in agreement

Linchpin white IPA

I ran into Fred Matt in the airport on the way to the Craft Brewers Conference earlier this month. I recall his saying that the Citra hop provided a citric element, which would seem appropriate in a white beer. I haven't tried this beer myself, however, nor any other white IPA.

Linchpin white IPA

White IPA seems to be a growing style. I recall Saranac does one, and someone else, I think Deschutes.

Shot and Beer - Change off or Stay the Course

I like George's other thought: When I drink alone, I prefer to be by myself.

Shot and Beer - Change off or Stay the Course

Long ago, when I used to do this kind of thing, I would chase Wild Turkey Rye 101 with Carlsberg Elephant. That was before craft beer could be found (for the most part) on the east coast.

Sweet Brown Beer?

That's a nice one, too, albeit a bit strong for some folks.

Sweet Brown Beer?

That's Raison D'Etre. Good call on doppelbocks. other nice ones are Paulaner Salvator, Spaten Optimator, and Ayinger Celebrator, which is unique in being darker and having more coffee notes.

Sweet Brown Beer?

I would think that many brown ales in your area will have ample malt sweetness. Where do you live?

Where is Goose Island Prevalent?

Which beer? Goose Island makes a lot of them.

Best Hard Cider? [moved from Spirits board]

It just seemed strange that they would discontinue a successful brand.

Best Hard Cider? [moved from Spirits board]

While not definitive, Craft Business Daily, writing about Angry Orchard, refers to HardCore as their previous brand. I will ask someone at BBCo when I get a chance, to confirm.

Best Hard Cider? [moved from Spirits board]

I believe HardCore is no more, replaced by Angry Orchard.

Canned Beers for a Beer Tasting

Here's a good listing of what's out there: http://www.craftcans.com/

Corn beer?

That's interesting. I read about it just now on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tejuino

I'm guessing that it contains very little alcohol. Is it sold in bottles?

Where is Goose Island Prevalent?

I appreciate your last point, although the term "Master Brewer" seems to be ill-defined in the US. (some discussion, albeit dated, here: http://www.probrewer.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=30145)

I recall Sam Calagione tearing into the Beer Advocate crowd when they started dumping on breweries that committed the sin of being too successful.

Pear Cider , Perry Suggestions

Sir Perry is a real brand.

Where is Goose Island Prevalent?

Okay. Now tell me what's wrong with Goose Island doing well, as they seem to make pretty good beer.

Where is Goose Island Prevalent?

I believe they have additional capacity for these beers, although i don't know how that will translate into additional supply, given their expanded sales footprint.

US Craft Beer influence on British Beer Styles.

I don't know what they're doing these days, but before Inbev bought them, AB made all manner of beers at their pilot brewery. You probably know Mitch Steele; he was involved with the pilot plant at one time. They used to bring out their beers for us to try on press trips to their hop farm and maltings.

US Craft Beer influence on British Beer Styles.

That may be the case; I'm just speculating. Next time I talk to an importer I'll ask about that.

US Craft Beer influence on British Beer Styles.

They might be the UK's answer to the Tubes.

US Craft Beer influence on British Beer Styles.

Anecdotal (and speculative), based on my observation. As I said, I don't know the timeline, but I've noticed client breweries of importers such as B United have done some of these experiments, and I expect that some of these have come about from discussions between them. I could be wrong, as I've never asked anyone involved about how they came about.

US Craft Beer influence on British Beer Styles.

Yes, and in the '60s the British consumed more blues than we did in the US. Good analogy.

US Craft Beer influence on British Beer Styles.

I don't know who did what first, but some styles, such as Belgian IPAs, have been encouraged by the importers of Belgian beers to the US. Still an influence of craft, but brought about by a third party.

Best Brewpub in America

Stumbled across this today: http://www.chow.com/best-brewpubs

Historical beers

Liberty Ale is a fantastic beer that is probably overlooked by some against a field of super-hoppy beers.

It's nice to see Anchor's heritage being maintained (such as by retaining Mark Carpenter) while also seeing an effort to grow their sales.

Historical beers

Right, they all use indigenous Scottish ingredients.

Bad beer trends.

This is true in many areas.

Bad beer trends.

Right, Catamount was a tough loss, for example.

The big brewers are starting to figure out how to play, too. Blue Moon is doing really well for MillerCoors. ABI seems to be leaving Goose Island alone now that they own it, providing resources and keeping hands off. Good move.
