You have $10 for a meal, where do you go in Toronto?

I don't know about the food court, but getting in and out of Pacific Mall is never quick!

Look for a private and high-end "private room" in a restaurant downtown Toronto

There are quite a few. The Turf Restaurant on Bay and Harbour Sixty have both come through for us in the past. Colleagues, whose tastes I trust, have suggested Barbarian's Celler. Depending how private you want, I have seen catered meetings being held in the alcoves around the lobby at 1 King West.

Black Sheep Ale - available in Toronto?

The Black Sheep Pub on Yonge north of Sheppard used to import it, but I haven't been there in years, and I think the current establishment has new owners and managers.

ISO : Lamb Shanks

They might not cost an arm and a leg, but they will cost a number of shanks!

Lamb shanks are a standard item in Persian cuisine, so you should be able to find them in the places along Yonge Street between Finch and Hwy 7. Alternatively, there are enough meat shops at the SLM that you should be able to find enough. In either case, you might have to order in advance to make sure you get them.

You have $10 for a meal, where do you go in Toronto?

"R.I.P. Zeller's cafeterias. The lunch specials were well under $10 with a drink, and predictably good comfort food, under appreciated. Too bad the staff was turfed."

And going waaaaay back, RIP Bay Street Woolworth's lunch counter. It was easy to get a really tasty lunch for $4-5. The burger was a particularly good value.

ISO plain, high-fat, organic yogurt

The fat content of yogurt is a function of two things: The fat content of the milk used to make the yogurt and the extent to which it is strained. Also, the only difference between standard yogurt and "Greek" yogurt is that the Greek version is strained more, which is why we see higher fat content in Greek yogurts. If you use organic, whole, 3.8% milk to make the yogurt and don't strain it, you will have 3.8% fat content yogurt. If you strain it, a negligible amount of the fat strains away with the whey, so that the fat percentage increases. If you start with 750 ml of 3.8% yogurt and strain off only 250ml of whey, you'll have 5.7% fat yogurt. (250ml of whey contains 13g of sugars and 2 g of protein and 60 calories no matter what type of plain (unsweetened, unflavoured) yogurt you are straining. My experience is that you can often strain off at least a half of the volume. So using a 750 ml Organic Meadow 3.8% as an example, assuming you strain off half the volume (375ml) in whey, you'd be left with 375 ml of Greek-style yogurt containing, 430 calories, 28g carbs, and 20g of protein.

Furthermore, making your own yogurt is actually quite simple, but that would be a post for the recipes board.

Best Pork Dishes

No. When Googs meant that Churrasco was "next" to Paddington, she meant across the aisle. If you walk in the door from Front St where Paddington's is on the right, Churrasco is on the left, just past the coffee place but before you get to the aisle that crosses.

La Boucherie in the SLM sell a lot of Easter lambs as well, but pre-ordering would likely be required. Highland farms seems to have whole lambs regularly.

Open Window Bakery closing?

I bought a double rye there recently, hoping that it would be the rye we used to get at Open Window. It wasn't even remotely close on texture or flavour. I still haven't found a rye that compares to Open Window's.

Agreed. I was just trying to point out that there is a lot of extra calories and fat.

Deep frying = XX extra calories. Anyone????

Those values seem reasonable. Yes, a thicker cut potato should absorb less oil. I don't know if it is a significant difference, though.

Remember it is a function of surface area. For example, if you take a chicken breast and coat it and deep fry it, it will absorb a certain amount of oil. If you decide to use the same chicken breast to make homemade "popcorn" chicken like you might see at KFC, so the chicken breast gets cut up before coating and deep frying, there will be substantially more oil absorbed.

Deep frying = XX extra calories. Anyone????

That 90 calories was for a single piece of fish.

In french fries, deep frying roughly doubles the calories. That will vary somewhat by the thickness of the cut. Thinner cut have more surface area to absorb the oil.

Deep frying = XX extra calories. Anyone????

According to the data found here:

http://calorie-data.com/foods/show/Ha...

The difference between simple flouring and frying and battering and deep frying is about 90-100 calories, almost all of it from fat. The extra 10 grams of fat (14 vs 4.1) at 9 cal/gram is 90 calories.

Every tablespoon of oil is 120 calories, regardless of type.

All-Clad "Rondo" - Where to find or substitute?

I know it seems huge, but we use it all the time. We do a lot of vegetable dishes where the volume reduction is huge. For example, three bunches of endive or rapini will barely fit into the pot.

Thank you everyone for the leads.

Thank you ellabee. Once I got the spelling right, thanks to Ninevah, I did have better success with Google. The Sitram seems like it may be a very good alternate.
