L'inconnu

I went back to L'Inconnu this week, and as always, I had a delicious meal. I started off with an entree of sweetbread, perfectly cooked and seasoned. This was followed by gnocchi in a beef braised sauce, and the main was black cod with curried sauce and squash. These two dishes were simply to die for. Succulent, well-balanced, a bit spicy, just perfect. Dessert was a plum pudding with eggnog.

The entire meal was served in perfect coordination by knowledgeable and friendly staff.
L'Inconnu is one of those places that I like to go to when I crave a succulent, out of the ordinary meal. I have never left there feeling disappointed.

Ask to speak to Jean-Michel or Béatrice.

We had ours done here, it was amazing! We had a rasberry mousseline & lemon cake. For 125 people, less than $400. They will also give you a free tasting of one or two different flavours if you ask.

Good places in Verdun?

Are Villa Wellington & Woodland still open? Is it still as good as it was in 2006 (when this post was started)?

Chez ma grosse truie chérie

We went to Ma Grosse Truie on Saturday night. The restaurant is interestingly decorated with a nice ambiance. The service was good, albeit a bit slow. We waited for over 10 minutes for our drinks, but the food came quickly once ordered, well timed.
Apero: Craquant au speck fumé et fromage cheddar ... good, interesting, but nothing spectacular.
Entrée: the Truie soup... an onion soup with a nice rich broth, lots of bread & bacon. I would have liked a bit more cheese on top.
Main: Pavé de porcelet de lait et polenta au cheddar, légumes de saison et jus de braisage... REALLY good!! I loved the tenderness of the pork, and the mix with the cheddar polenta was really great! The portion was also quite big, very satisfying.
Dessert: Macarons au chocolat et écrasé de fraises au Maury, sorbet au yaourt et gingembre sauvage, balsamique au Jivara... I found the macarons a bit too sweet for my own taste (but then I was completely stuffed by then). The sorbet was amazing though, I would go back there just for that!
Price for 1 person (with 2 drinks) $90.

Friends took either the veal cutlet (special of the day) or the lamb... everything was extremely tender and juicy.
Next time we go, I'll probably take the same main meal as above with the mix of sorbets for dessert, and the oysters as an entree.

Chez ma grosse truie chérie

We're going to Ma Grosse Truie tomorrow night for a birthday dinner. From everyone's descriptions, I guess it's an ideal place to go as a group. I hope the food won't be a letdown. I am definetely taking the porcelet au lait as my main.
Has anyone else been there in the past month? Any suggestions for the entrees & desserts?

Special meal downtown for 2: Decca77 or L'Inconnu?

For reviews on L'Inconnu, please check out this thread http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/521025

L'Inconnu is a very nice restaurant, great atmosphere and food. Definetely great for a "special" meal. I am sure you will not be disappointed if you go.
However, I would mention that you would like a vegetarian menu for one of you when reserving.

I have not been to Decca yet, so I cannot comment.

Looking for... edible hibiscus flowers (in a jar)

Does anyone know where I can find this in Montreal? They open up when placed in a glass with champagne/vin mousseux...
Thanks

Restaurant in Lachute??

I am looking for a decent restaurant in Lachute or within 10 km from there. It is to celebrate a birthday either for lunch or dinner, so I don't want a café. Any type of cuisine would do, but no Asian.
Thanks!

EDIT: Someone suggested Au Vieux Charbon. Does anyone know anything about this place?

Old Montreal Restaurant-recommendations? Near Centaur Theatre

Mirchi is great, definetely worth a try. Not sure if they're open for lunch though.

Is Graziella any good?

I went to Graziella for lunch a few days ago, and although it did not wow me, I found the food very good. It is definetely very close to home-cooking and I found that refreshing and interesting. The stuffed grilled calamari entree was great (very homey) and my main course was a plate of ravioli (stuffed with aragula and some cheese - I don't remember which type, but it was very good) in tomato sauce, very well balanced and tasty.
For dessert, I had the lemon-pie (home-made) and definetely liked it. It was however not unanimous at my table as another person found it too eggy...
For the price, lunch at $25 pp for entree and main course, I will go back.

Where did you eat this week ? Part 2 Fall 2009

We had dinner at Zen-ya (Ste-Catherine W. st. above the Bar Istori) on Friday night. This place was a bit tough to find, the location really does not do them any justice. It is on the second floor, above the Istori bar, very easily missed. The stairs going up to it are also dingy and dirty.
Inside the restaurant, however, it is quite something else. Very nice and cozy decor, modern, elegant (albeit a tiny bit too dark). The food was very good, especially the tartar salmon entree. Sushi was excellent, fresh and well done. The only disappointment for me was the fresh oyster entree, but it might have been a question of personal taste.
All in all, a great sushi place to go to for a romantic meal or with a (smallish) group of friends.

Questions from a transplanted Torontonian

Indian: I am not sure if they deliver, but if they do, Moti Mehal is very good. http://restaurantmotimehal.com/.
Otherwise for an Indian outing, Mirchi in Old Montreal: http://www.restaurantmirchi.com/

Ethiopian Food: Mekkdala or Magdala on Bishop St., downtown.

Sheet Cakes for The Wedding

I am also getting married next year and after having discussed cakes with over 5 pastry shops and found out how outrageous the prices are, I almost gave up. Until someone gave me this referral: Les Délices d'Amandine. http://delicesdamandine.com/
It's a small pastry shop, a front for a large pastry caterer who delivers mainly to restaurants and hotels. The prices are therefore a lot more decent.
You can ask for Michel, and I suggest you also request to have a tasting... it's free and they were very good.

where to spend the calories: Cosmos or Pied du Cochon?

Walking distance restaurant from Espace Geordie (Berri corner Duluth)

I will be attending an event at Espace Geordie on Tuesday night and we would like to grab dinner before. I am not extremely familiar with the restaurants in the area, and we are definiteley looking for a place no more than 10 minutes walking distance from Espace Geordie. The only one I can think of (that I know) is Chez Doval.
What other ones should we consider?
Anything Italian, Portugueuse, Greek, Quebecois, etc. (except Indian and Ethiopian), the budget beeing between $15-30 pp for the whole meal (no alcohol). Thank you.

Any good cheap Indian restaurant?

My new favourite Indian place is Mirchi in Old Montreal. Very good food and nice atmosphere and decor (which was surprising compared to other Indian restaurants in Montreal. www.restaurantmirchi.com

El Jíbaro, Eche pa Echarle and other hole-in-wall Peruvians in north end?

There's Solymar, also on St-Hubert St.
Great Peruvian food, it is not a BYOW though.

Brunch in Downtown Montreal

We ended up at Le Cartet yesterday morning, I quite enjoyed it. Three of us had the Brunch des Cantons, while my other friend had a plate of fruit, a croissant and a baguette.
The highlights of the meal: the sausage in the Brunch des Cantons and the truly tasty beans; the freshly pressed orange juice and the great capuccino, along with great presentation.
We were disappointed by the bread (the baguette was so dry and hard that we had trouble chewing it, we left half of it there) and the fact that the bacon and ham in the Brunch des Cantons dishes were burnt, almost not eatable.
All in all it was a good breakfast and a place I will return to hoping that next time there will be less burnt stuff in my dish and that the bread will be fresher.

Brunch in Downtown Montreal

Any ideas for an interesting brunch (around 11 am) on Sunday somewhere downtown? Preferably walking distance to Place Bonaventure...

Le Resto in Old-Longueuil (St-Charles St. West)

We had lunch at Le Resto in Old Longueuil on Friday, it was quite nice. It is a smallish place with 4-5 tables on the sidewalk, and some red banquets inside with a few mirrors on the walls... Personally, I think it is a bit worn out and it should be renovated. It is however a nice place for a lunch, with decent prices. I had the special-of-the-day mussels (white wine, cream, mushrooms) with fries. Very good mussels and the portion was quite generous. The fries were exactly how I like them (ie: not skinny and dried-up), and they came with a spicy mayo. My boyfriend had the chicken caesar salad from the regular menu (the mussels are also available on the regular menu), and he quite enjoyed it. It is not the best he ever had, but good enough for us to return there (he is a somewhat Caesar salad afficiendo).
The dessert that came with my special-of-the-day dish was this incredibly creamy and perfectly sweet cheese cake.
So for $50 (tip & tax included) with a glass of white wine (Pinot Grigio $6) and a pop, the price was very decent and the meal satisfied us both.

Dependable French for Friends' First Visit

If taking a cab is not an issue, I suggest trying l'Inconnu. www.linconnu.ca It has a very nice atmosphere, well decorated and the food is very, very good. It is French market cuisine, closed on Sundays and Mondays I believe though.

Wings in Montreal

I was in Ottawa over the weekend and we went to Wild Wings. While those that I ordered (Lime Zesty) were way too overpowering (lime-wise), the ones that my brother had were quite tasty with a hint of nutmeg and cinnamon.
However, I just realized that I don't know of any place like this in Montreal (where you can choose from a variety of 20-30 wings)... do you?
And if not, where have you eaten the best, best wings in Montreal? I like mine not fatty, not too much BBQ sauce and a bit crispy...

On the topic of MILK: Looking for...*Hard*

They had it about a year ago, I imagine they still do.

Family with Toddlers seeking foodie neighborhood in Montreal

I think you will find the Plateau a lot more interesting with your kids and for culinary reasons. While the downtown has good restaurants to offer, I would personally prefer strolling down on the Plateau with toddlers. The Monkland Village area is also quite nice, but the Plateau will have more to offer.

blind test -- the tastiest milk is...

Due to lactose intolerance, I've tasted all lactose-free milks in the past 2 years. The only one that does not have that weird taste/texture is the Natrel, in my opinion.

Where did you eat this week ?

I had dinner at Taverne Magnan last night. The roast beef was as delicious as ever, although we all (three of us) found it quite fat. I left about 1/4 of my piece on the plate, it was just pure fat. I had a baked potato with that, quite dry. For me, this place is just about the roast beef, ideally a not too fatty piece.
I also ate at Baton Rouge earlier last week (ribs of course) and am planning to organize a "mussels" dinner sometimes this week.
