Any MEZCAL LOVERS? Where can I find good Mezcal in L.A.?
Barkeeper on Sunset in Silverlake has a selection, including a few Del Maguey as recommended by a previous poster.
Pig Tails?
A Grocery Warehouse in Echo Park has them. Also, pork bung. Because why separate the tail from the bung?

Suprised no one mentioned Rivera, http://www.riverarestaurant.com/. Super close to Staples center, very quiet (unless you are sitting next to that creepy hobbit actor and his loud friends, as I was on a visit), and pretty good food with excellent cocktails.

Deal on a kitchen island in LA?
Thanks all! Was looking for an option besides Ikea, which of course was my first thought. Didnt think of restaurant supply stores, I'll look into those.
Deal on a kitchen island in LA?
I recently moved to a new apt downtown, and while the kitchen is well-equipped, we're i dire need of more counter-space.
Any suggestions on where to find a good, affordable, quality kitchen island?
(especially ones featuring a butcher block top)
Thanks for your help!
$7.99 6-packs of Torpedo and Celebration Ale @ Whole Foods
Forgot to post this back when I found it a couple days ago. Whole Foods (Glendale) beer buyer Mike got ahold of some warehouse overstock of Sierra Nevada's Torpedo and Celebration Ale, both phenomenal IPAs. This is a great price.
What's the spiciest (yet still edible) Dish you've had in LA?
Is this soup actually delicious? Or just a gimmick? I love really hot food, but only if it can back it up.
Drinks and Dinner near UCB @ Franklin and Bronson
I'm heading out to my first LA UCB show this weekend (can it live up to the NYC shows I've loved so much?) and my friends and I are looking to have a great meal, with drinks aplenty. I know there are some Thai places around there, but they tend to be a bit more bare-bones and beer-only than we are looking for on this occasion. Recommendations would be great! Price range is muy flexible, but lets stay at $$$-and-under on the Yelp ("boo, hissssss" haha) scale.
Good HOPPY Cheap Beer
An aggregate, for posterity and as a reference:
60 Minute IPA
Ballast Point Big Eye
Bear Repulbic Racer 5
Brooklyn East India Pale Ale
Clipper City Loose Cannon
Dale's Pale Ale
Green Flash West Coast IPA
Harpoon IPA
Haverhill Leatherlips
Hop Head Red
Lagunitas IPA
Long Hammer
Michelob Pale Ale
New England Brewing Sea Hag
Opa Opa IPA
Point Cascade Pale Ale
Sierra Nevada Torpedo
Smuttynose IPA
Southern Tier IPA
Stone IPA
Sweetwater IPA
Trinity IPA
Troegs Nugget Nectar
Victory Hopdevel
Many of these I have tried and loved. Some of them (Smuttynose, 60 minute, Brooklyn) I've enjoyed on the East Coast, and have trouble finding here in LA. On the other hand, there are many excellent beers here that I never saw in Massachusetts (Lagunitas).
Thanks for the responses.
Mussels & Fries, where o where?
Great fries, however the mussels were mediocre and the sauce was ok. Coulda been less globby and more flavour.
Beer Wars
Apparently Ben Stein has something to do with this, and he has the perfect name for this sort of project.
I dont agree with many of the man's opinions, but here I think we can reconcile.

Good HOPPY Cheap Beer
Browsing the Best Cheap Beer thread (which was a great read), I was a little frustrated by how I just didn't like a lot of those beers, regardless of how dollar-efficient they are. "Good" is way too subjective.
Perhaps there should be a category of sticky "recession" threads for great buys on specific styles of beer.
In any case--I am a lover of hop-centric brews, and given that a) I am far from alone in that preference and b) hoppy beers tend to be pricier than their compadres, I was hoping to engage in a lively discussion on budget-friendly beers with an IPA ethos.
Let me begin by saying that I, too, miss SN Celebration Ale. I find that the Pale Ale does a pretty great job for the money. Any other suggestions for cost-efficient hop experiences?
Chef-ly terms -- Can you help define them for me?
Have you seen Ratatouille? Watch Ratatouille.
How have you not seen Ratatouille?!
Someone Else's Dime - Where to Go?
Well, vegetarian in this case actually just means kosher--one member of the team cannot eat meats or shellfish. Fish, on the other hand, is ok.
Someone Else's Dime - Where to Go?
Thanks for the response!
Cut is definitely on any shortlist of places to go, but I'm not sure if its appropriate for a vegetarian and the prices are a bit too high.
Someone Else's Dime - Where to Go?
Howdy,
One of the (few) upsides to my job is the opportunity to be wined and dined on someone else's budget. My colleagues and I have usually gone for sushi, but we have been brainstorming for other places to enjoy. Criteria to narrow the selection are:
- Good for moderate-sized groups of 5-7 people
- Vegetarian accommodating
- Not astronomically priced (Urasawa is too high, Soma is a reach)
- Within 4 miles of Miracle Mile
- Decor (one of my coworkers would eat cold Spam if the setting was elegant enough)
- Of course, excellent food!
We've had great experiences at Craft and higher-end sushi restaurants because of the dining interactivity and broad selection.
All cuisines are welcome. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
Who's been to new coffee places in Echo Park/SL? (2nd try)
This place is really great. I've had their mushroom crepe as well as a napoleon. The mushroom crepe was delicious and generously filled, and the napoleon was fresh, light, and creamy. Their espresso is good as well.
I believe the owners are Russian, as keemka guessed. They have all sorts of russian-branded chocolate stuff behind the counter.
Bail-top bottles - Where to Find Near Silverlake?
I'm making some boozy aged eggnog and would love to give it away as a gift in some nifty bail top bottles. I live in Silverlake, and am not going to get the chance to visit the Culver City brewing supply store any time soon.
Any suggestions? Hardware stores? Hobby shops?
Thanks!
In Search of the Chocolate Bacon Bar
Intelligencia Coffee Shop in Silverlake @ Sunset Junction has 'em. Located directly next door to the Cheese Shop, which also sells wine.
So that's bacon, coffee, chocolate, cheese and wine, all in one place.
Chiles' Negative Effects on Memory?
Hello,
My father swears there has recently been a major study indicating that eating chiles has a negative effect on the memory. To me, this sounds absurd. I can find nothing on the topic no matter how hard I google. Anyone who can confirm this? Or shall I consider the myth busted?
Has anyone seen this? I don't see a thread,
TAL transcends the standards for "true-life" media. Great post, glad I stumbled in out of curiosity. Wish you'd been more specific in your title, so more folks would take a look.
Request For One-Pot Weekend Wonders
Hey, looking for ideas for a healthy and balanced one-pot dish to last the week. I've been very busy the last couple of weeks, so I've been cooking on weekends and stretching it out through the weekdays. Seasonal veggies and inexpensive proteins a plus, but not a must. All flavors and cuisines welcome!
Cooking with a panini press
I move about every 3 months, so a panini press is prohibitively impractical, but I read an interview with Alton Brown at one point in which he raved about panini-pressed cornish game hens. Said he liked the sound of their bones crunching. I imagine he butterflied them first, and it sounded like a great idea. I don't think those critters are fatty enough to need a runoff.
Must-try at Clio tonight?
1st time dinner at Clio tonight to celebrate graduation. Probably won't do tasting, and I'm leaving town very soon, so I'd love to get a few recommendations from the regular menu. What's essential?
Greek?
What about Sabur(sp?) in Somerville, up Holland from Davis Square? Are they Greek? I've never been, but these boards have been friendly to them in the past.
Davis Square Bars
2nd Toad, since you won't be looking to eat if you're going out after dinner. Great intimate space, live music, never a cover. Will be packed tonight, though.
Quick Questions for a Seafood Stew
Hey all,
I'm making a seafood stew based on an Epicurious cioppino recipe. I bought some chopped clams (cheap) and bay scallops (cheap), and both came sitting in a liquid. The scallop liquid is opaque and milky, and the clams liquid is...well, full of clam parts, so tough to tell. Question is, can/should I add these liquids to the stew for flavor (like the bottle of clam juice going in), or are they nasty preservative/bacteria laden carriers of misery?
Thanks.
D
