Official Alphonso Mangos 2015 discussion

Agree, pretty sure they are the same. Have seen both spellings, although Alphonso is much more common. Interestingly, it is commonly believed that they were named after a guy from Portugal as that country helped establish the variety in India: Afonso de Albuquerque (also spelled Alfonso de....)

Magic Noodle - Richmond Hill Branch

I'm sceptical about what is in the soup noodle broths from Asian restaurants. While it's possible that some do simmer "nutritious" brews, I believe most are some form of chemical cocktails. Since a nice bowl of ramen, pho or wonton noodles are among my favourite orders when dining out, I usually will leave most of the broth in the bowl even if it is very tasty and is kind of hard to do (as I was brought up not to waste food) if uncertain about the broth's positive qualities.

Best Dim Sum in Toronto

Had a chance to try Kwan finally. Very good dim sum experience. Certainly in Crown Princess' ball park, maybe even better. On the pricier side, but given the presentation and location not at all out of line. One could quibble about the har gow (I know CY would). The skin was not that thin and not at all translucent, but it was nevertheless quite tasty. Our bill (tax and tip included) was $47. for 8 items. A few pics attached.

where can I find ginger and black vinegar pig's feet

Sam Woo BBQ @ Warden & Bamburgh has "stewed pork hock with black vinegar" on their menu. Apparently not always available though.

Hooray! BC Spotted Prawns Season is here again!

Yeah, but I would want to know more about the supply trail before declaring "false advertising". Brings up the subject about place of origin labling (legal and otherwise) for wild caught seafood. Is it the territorial waters where they are caught, the registry of the ship/boat catching the fish, or even the location of the on-shore processing plant or wholesaler? Like Snarf has said, the prawns don't carry passports.

Hooray! BC Spotted Prawns Season is here again!

If not BC, then from the States where the season starts earlier. This could also be a case like Atlantic Salmon where not all atlantic salmon are from the Atlantic. That is marketing any spotted prawns as "BC spotted prawns" because of the name appeal?

Yeah...also I would trust Maple Yip that they are serving up what they advertise and highly doubt Charles could be hood-winked. Funny though about BC.

Best Dim Sum in Toronto

Safe to consider this is as a central core Toronto listing. I've been to 3 of the 5 top listed. (still need to try Luckee and Kwan.) Living in North Scarborough, we certainly have equal if not better options than the Crown Princess closer to home. I consider ChaLau unique, but not better than the Crown Princess. Never appreciated the love for Mother's, but each to their own. I'm intrigued by Luckee, but am not in any rush to try it out on my own dime. Will likely hit Kwan before getting to Luckee.

Pearl at Bayview Village

I think Prima is referring to Casa Imperial on Steeles, @ Warden. Its sister restaurant, Casa Victoria is further north (Warden & Hwy 7). Both are above average Chinese restaurants.

The popularity of Swiss Chalet seems to be waning in the GTA. Thoughts?

Although it's been a few years since I've been at a SC, partly because most of my favorite locations have closed, I've only positive thoughts about this chain. Where else does one get rewarded for choosing portions (dark meat) that are preferred anyways? I still remember the take-out special of getting 5 quarters of leg meat chicken for the price of a whole chicken.

The good news is that for the geographically challenged CH'ers (and there are many), the new location is close enough to Scarborough to still be considered Scarborough;-)

Is Scarborough the dining capital of the world?

Thanks for posting this. I was able to locate the 2 Filipino lechon, Sri Lankan and Indian places and also the Sichuan place that was the next stop, but unable to identify the other N. China restaurant "Xinxiang". Did you mean Xin Jiang in Markham?

Is Scarborough the dining capital of the world?

Would be happy to see some recommendations from those that buy into the thesis that Scarborough is the dining capital of the whole world. While the prof does not see the need to provide examples to support his theory, it would be entirely appropriate for others to do so on a forum intended to share dining experiences.

"If you are wondering where I went, that is beside the point." - This quote negates much of the value of his comments. Maybe it's just me, but I want to hear the details, and not just be accepting of his words.

Hong Kong Style Egg Custard Waffle Cookies - " Toast Delight " yummy version.

My son took this picture of the "bread basket" with his meal at Bo Innovations in Hong Kong. I understand it's a take on this street food that has been infused with green onions. Given that Alvin Leung is opening his restaurant soon here in Spadina Chinatown, perhaps we might see something similar there. But it would be a lot cheaper to get this taste at Toast Delight;)

Foodie take note: Great news! Michelin Star Chef backed restaurant opening up in April!!

What Bo Innovations debacle are you referencing? Just asking, as my son raved about a recent experience there. A related restaurant in Spadina Chinatown in Toronto would be nice to see.

Peking duck in North York

Prima: Check out Paradise at Finch and Leslie which is associated with downtown's Dynasty. I thought of Kwan too which does advertise Peking Duck ($48) on their online menu, but I'm not sure that's in North York;)

Chinese Restaurant Toronto

About 10 years ago, I was researching which restaurants to try out in Spadina Chinatown (besides Lee Garden) and both New Sky and Xam Yu seemed to be highly rated then, so my wife and I flipped a coin one day and had a meal at New Sky. I don't recall that much except a rather pushing waitress (in a good way) who we allowed to pick our dishes we had that night. I wasn't bad, but not memorable (obviously) and we've never been back. When E-pan opened a few years later and we heard that some of New Sky's workers were involved, we went there and did several repeat visits to that restaurant over the years (until they closed recently). We've never did try Xam Yu;)

Chinese Restaurant Toronto

Hi Charles: I haven't eaten there in over a year (late 2013) or as much as I would like because most of the family is now in the burbs. However it had consistently been good for us over many, many years. I am aware that many do not like the place thinking that it caters too much to Western palates, but I think that's overstated and even if true it has been non-problematic for us. If I read your previous post http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/6184... on this correctly, your group would have been there in late 2012. Probably both our opinions are now dated;)

How important is the location ie "downtown Chinatown" and if so which Chinatown would you be referring to? Old Chinatown near City Hall or Spadina/Dundas Chinatown. Assume you do not mean East Chinatown near Broadview/Gerrard.

If your requirement is not that location specific, then places like Dynasty, Crown Princess or Pearl Harbourfront might work in the downtown area. I don't think they have private rooms, but your requirements could be met with 2 adjacent large tables (the ones that seat up to 8/10). The Crown Princess has a semi-private nook that you might be able to reserve. Our last time at Dynasty in these circumstances had the two tables shoehorned in the dining room...I didn't find it that comfortable (or laid back;))

Lai Wah Heen which could be considered to be located in old Chinatown does have a private room, but I've no experience with that.

In Spadina/Dundas Chinatown, we've often done the two table scenerio at Lee Garden with the expected tight squeeze (but with good food).
