Toronto Restaurant Rec Needed

+1 for Bistro Camino. If insisting to be downtown, check out some Hotel restaurant menu offerings. Annona at the Park Hyatt might work.

'Skyview Fusion Chinese' - Sorry folks! Another relatively new kid on the block. This one could be the best 'early-bird' Dim Sum in the GTA?!

I've been for dim sum a couple of times during regular hours, and personally never thought the place was that special, but rather just comparable to about 10 other good places in the RH/Markham/N. Toronto area. Their cha sui is reputed to be really special, but our group didn't experience this. My spouse had a better experience recently with her friends, but that would speak to inconsistencies. Certainly I would recommend early bird for the quality, but would warn about the apparent hassles or the need to go "really" early.

Good Restaurants around Fairview Mall

" a good greasy burger joint" - you are referring to the famous "Johnny's Hamburgers". Great place but apparently not that highly regarded by many CH'ers.

'Stone Fortune' - A disappointing 'Hong Kong Cafe' experience.

I don't think I've tried enough of OMG's menu to give a good opinion, but I've had their Ox tongue, Ox Tail, and pork chop dishes in the past. You should have no complaints about portion sizes with OMG;-)

'Stone Fortune' - A disappointing 'Hong Kong Cafe' experience.

Hey Charles: Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy the place as much as we did. We had different dishes....ox tongue in onion sauce served with rice & a bowl of brisket ho fun soup for 2 of us, so I can't comment on your particular experience. Agree though that the portions are not huge like some other HK cafes, however the portions we had were more than enough at lunchtime for us..different stomach elasticity I guess;-) We are talking about dishes in the $6-8 range including drinks, so no issues with the pricing for us as taste is our primary criteria for good value, but YMMV. I understand the new management has only been in place for a month or so, but I was encouraged enough to go again soon and will keep your comments in mind. The place is small and often crowded and myself hating crowds the trick is when to go. The name of the place is actually Fortune Stone Restaurant.

Buy, Buy, Birdie?

Ha...I think they should market it as something other than roast chicken...something more exotic/cute sounding, otherwise it comes across as a rip-off.

I've read somewhere, or someone told me that there might be a past "Dickens" connection to OMG. But seems like this is claimed by quite a few places;-)

I've liked OMG's pork chop and ox tail plates in the past. On subject of other HK style places, another gem for me recently has been Fortune Stone in the T&T mall @ Steeles & Warden. The restaurant is small and tables are crowded (a drawback), and I've always liked their food, but they've had a recent mgmt change and modified their menu....I like the place even more now!

Chinese food with good veg/seafood options near Bayview and Sheppard?

Have you checked out Kwan's in the St Clair / Yonge area? I've not been, but a number of my friends have and report that it's decent...as in not really a competitor to draw "uptown" (as in North of Steeles) Chinese food fans but might be worth it for mid-towners. It probably could more than hold its own against the Pearl @ Bayview Village or even the Paradise @ Finch / Leslie (a branch of downtown's Dynasty) given the shorter commute for you. Sun Star is a bit different and definitely worth a trip.

My experience with OMG (and most HK styles) is for lunchtime. Please report on your findings if you do go. Regarding others, I hesitate a bit because I find them all a bit different....almost like variances in home cooking the same recipes. One that I like and frequent (partly because of convenience is D&R Wings on Bamburgh Circle. I was going to recommend Kam Fai 38 @ Steeles & Brimley too but apparently it's closed (which I did't know about until now...one needs a program to keep track;-))

Hi Charles: I have been once recently to the Dicken's in the Richlane Mall. It was fine, but relatively pricey. I think we got one of the specials that seemed to have two mains included so the four of us ended up ordering two specials to share. I guess it could be called HK style, but is more upscale than the Phoenix chain for eg. (I guess I'm saying I don't really consider it to be typical HK style. which I equate more to comfort food.) Having said this, I am not planning any return trips to Dicken's, as OK as the food was. A comparable place is La Piazzetta Ristorante inside the Monte Carlo on Woodbine which I prefer probably more for the ambiance than food. But discussing HK style is difficult due to the wide variances. (taste and now price points). I have not been to Hollywood in Market Village...what's your take on it? Regarding Maple Yip, I've only been once in the past 6 months, but experienced its normal (to me) high quality.

I think he is trying to make the point that people can judge a place without actually dining at the place. He is right to a degree, and this kind of speculation happens often on CH. But I'm also annoyed by these observations....try the place, then comment!! Or at least clarify that you have not actually eaten there, but want to offer your thoughts.

Maple Yip has always been one of the best overall and consistent Cantonese restaurants in the GTA imo. It remains my favorite. I'm not a fan of the Pheonix chain of HK style restaurants. I find much variance in this category....I currently like OMG the best.

Does the menu mention the english name of the establishment anywhere....private kitchen? How would they identify themselves to dinesafe for example?

If you google the address that Charles provided above for the "private kitchen", you should come across a picture of the storefront which does not seem to have any English name. The Chinese characters (不見不散) translate to "See you there" or "There or be square" (google translate). Not sure where the name "private kitchen" comes from. Certainly does not seem to be an English friendly establishment though.

To each their own. But regarding Vinnie as a CH contributor, I disagree with your sentiments. As a sometimes contributor, but mainly reader of CH, one of Vinnie's past recommendations has remained the most useful addition to my restaurant rotation. In general his insights, while they can be humorous (a good thing), are often spot on.....for this CH'er.

Mother's Dumplings - coming to the Danforth (east of Pape)

You are entitled to your opinions, but I think it's incorrect to categorize Spadina Chinatown food as a lot of "gwai-lo...." food. There is a huge cross selection of Chinese cuisines concentrated in a small area. Of course taste is subjective and may not be for everyone. But if you are looking for the kind of food that non-gwai-lo's eat, you would not have any problems if you cared to look.

House of Gourmet - what to order?

I'm not a regular at HofG, in fact I can only recall a quick wonton noodle soup stop in recent memory, and while the place has a rather large menu, it is primarily known as a noodle/congee place. Given that I would focus on a dish like Cantonese Chow Mein that is easily shared, and that should showcase their wok skills.

Pretty certain that Lee Garden is not open for lunch. An alternative to King Noodle would be House of Gourmet on Dundas, just East of Spadina....similar to KN, but many that I know like HofG better.

Now I understand better how that HK dim sum place got their star. It certainly didn't look like it had much going for it from the comfort, service or decoration angle. I also suspect it didn't have much of a wine list.
