' La Croisee ' - Leaside's new French Bistro with cozy, romantic ambiance and delectable Burgundian Food!

I believe three of the longer running, more consistent and reasonably successful Chinese restaurants and where the chef has major skin in the game are Maple Yip in Scarborough, Lee Garden in Spadina Chinatown, and Legend in Thornhill.

Restaurant recommendations in Toronto---Chinatown

I've never found a good Chinese Canadian style egg roll in Spadina Chinatown and doubt Lee Garden even have it on the menu;)

My two favorite Chinese restaurants in Spadina Chinatown (the closest Chinatown to UoT's St George campus) are Lee Garden and the House of Gourmet. HoG is more rustic and cheaper relative to Lee Garden. In old Chinatown near Toronto City Hall, I like Yueh Tung's luncheon menu.

Restaurants open on December 25th for dinner in Toronto's Chinatown?

Given that Toronto has 3 distinct Chinatowns, you could be more specific if it matters to you. The easy answer is that some places will certainly be open if you are not picky (especially if you are referring to Spadina Chinatown). However my suggestion is to contact any favorite restaurants you might target and enquire directly whether they plan to open on December 25th.

Pearl King

Owned by same people as the Pearl at Harbourfront and the Pearl at Bayview Village which serve slightly above average dim sum at higher prices (think Crown Princess or Dynasty on Yorkville prices). Looking at online info, their selection seems limited...ie no chicken feet or beef tripe (my two favorite dim sums). They have skewers which might explain the "tapas" angle. Given the location, I would expect relatively "clean" premises. And they offered Groupons (currently sold out). I might give them a try if in the neighborhood (they don't have nearby competition except maybe Susur Lee's place), but I won't be in a hurry to do so and would also be interested in any first hand accounts.

"Ocean Seafood Restaurant", Richmond Hill - Lunch vs Dinner = Jekyll vs Hyde

This the new restaurant that replaced "Grass Mountain Villa" Chinese dim sum restaurant that had a long run at that location.

Hit and miss experiences at 'another' Congee place - Mr. Congee, Richmond Hill

The original Mr Congee in the GTA was and is a welcome addition to its location in Scarborough (inside Bridlewood Mall). When it opened a couple of years ago, it was rather mediocre at the beginning, but has replaced Congee Queen as a goto for the most part for us. Unlike the more spacious RH location, the Scarborough location is shoehorned into a relatively small space. Like most Chinese restaurants/congee operations, they are good at some things, not so good at others. We like the roast pork, honey oysters and a few other dishes at the Bridlewood location. Service is standard, but no complaints so far.

ISO Downtown's best dim sum

Good to know! How does it compare (quality and price) to Dynasty downtown or Crown Princess.

Alberta hounds visiting Markham, Toronto downtown & Niagara

With respect to your hotel in Markham, the following restaurants are considered higher level and are quite good (best imo). All should be within an easy 10 minutes drive or less: Elegance (previously mentioned), Casa Victoria, Casa Imperial, and Spring Villa. There should be no issues with cleanliness (bathrooms). All would be considered Cantonese restaurants. Let us know if you need recs for lower level/less expensive or other cuisine styles.
Also, wrt the below rec for Hart House/Gallery Grill - excellent suggestion, but it's likely closed for the summer months unless they've changed their policy.

Surprised you cannot find Chinese food recs in Markham from searching. Start again with searching "Charles Yu" posts. Within walking distance from your Markham hotel is Elegance: http://www.yelp.ca/biz/elegance-chine... for dim sum which I recommend and in the same strip mall is a peking duck place which I have not tried myself, but gets good reviews: http://www.yelp.ca/biz/dayali-restaur....

Need North York recommendation for a 50th wedding anniversary dinner

Regarding Kwan, I've only gotten reports from trusted sources as I've not gone yet myself. Basically the reports are the food is quite good especially for that area of town, but nothing too special compared to many in Markham/Richmond Hill and is likely pricier. This applies to both dim sum and regular dining (Sounds like Dynasty or Crown Princess). Worth a visit I think and it's on my list. However, it would be more of a priority if I lived closer to downtown TO.

Need North York recommendation for a 50th wedding anniversary dinner

For Chinese, suggest checking out Kwan; and there is the old standby: Auberge du Pommier.

A delicious authentic 'Real McCoy' Thai chowmeet at Khao San Road

But the dishes were off the current menu or recently offered as specials....available I guess to the masses.

Best Restaurant in Toronto (New CH poll)?

I'm confused when following this thread. A lot of the restaurants on the lists have been around for ages. There was a criteria/request that voters should have actually dined at a restaurant within the last year or 2 (?) to eliminate nostalgia voting, but I never thought there was a "newness" bias. Not agreeing with opinions here is quite normal and common, so I echo foodyDudey's request that you should just add your thoughts to the mix.

Alphonso and kesar mangos at Freshco

Went back to PriceChopper today and picked up a box of Kesars as the Alphonsos looked a bit overripe. My first experiences with both varieties. I find the Alphonsos superior to the Kesars...more sweet and fragrant.

Here is the box from Price Chopper which is a Sobey affiliate like Freshco. I'm guessing they would use the same supplier. Not shown is the brand which is "Akshay Impex"

This BBQ pork bun almost made me cry!!!

Had a chance to pick up some of the pineapple bbq pork buns from Landmark that several posters have noted here. As mentioned, they are not on the menu and are subject to availability. Here is a pic of what $3.39 got me:
And they were delicious!

Luckee

" they serve the soya sauce *broth" for the cheung fun warm" - This is happening at more places now. I've come across this several times recently although the only place I definitely remember was at the Crown Jewel (replaced the former Sam Woo Seafood) on Bamburgh Circle. A nice touch I agree.

Regarding the banchan, is there any significance to the number of side dishes? My Korean restaurant experience is limited, but at the 2 that I frequent, one always gives 9 different side dishes while the other gives only 2 (albeit the banchan are large).

Cozy coffee cafe around Markham area?

Update: The Green Grotto has moved within the plaza to the former Wendy's building. Long ignored by myself as I thought it was primarily a bubble tea hangout for the younger set, I was pleasantly surprised to see they have a small menu of Taiwanese dishes like Beef noodle soup and braised pork on rice. Combined with a huge assortment of hot and cold drinks along with a bowl of complimentary popcorn, the setup is a very comfortable hangout for all ages! Will definitely return.

Dragon Legend reviews?

Buffets, the Mandarin, and "authenticity" have certainly brought out polarized comments on CH in the past. The joy of CH I guess.

Personally, I try to avoid buffets or AYCE concepts (but am often dragged along to them in group functions) and I enjoy good Chinese food whether it is considered authentic or not. That said, I've always considered the Mandarin the best of the bigger Chinese buffets and have only been to the Dragon Pearl trice which I agree is largely comparable to the Mandarin although I think its food targets the Asian ethnic crowd more. The Dragon Legend is near me, but I'm not in any hurry to be dragged there either, although I suspect if one likes the Pearl, the Legend should be OK.

"FANCY" Chinese Cuisine, Markham - Sorry, Not At All!!

Mandarin is very popular with a wide ethnic base including Chinese, especially in areas with a high percentage in the population. The Mandarin on Woodbine would be one of these. My casual observation is that the customer base there is representative of the area. Everyone has their own standard for what is good or not. I would never suggest that people eat regularly at any place that they don't enjoy.

"FANCY" Chinese Cuisine, Markham - Sorry, Not At All!!

Fancy Chinese restaurant (Called Li Ka Sing in Chinese) is memorable because its Chinese name sounds similar to Li Ka-Shing, Asia's richest man. I've heard good reports about the restaurant's food and its limitations (very busy, poor parking, spotty service), but have never had a first hand experience. Not on my to-do list.

Luckee

Charles: I look at this differently. Looking at the prices and other write-ups, it appears that Luckee is in the Lai Wah Heen territory price wise or even lower. (Har Gow is listed as $6.) I've never been a big fan of LWH's prices, but have succumbed in the past to the "rip-off" and I'm still intact. Unlikely to make a special trip, but if I'm in the area, might be worth a try. Compared to other fare in the downtown area, prices don't seem terribly out of line and nothing beats trying a place first hand to crystallize an opinion. All in all, Luckee seems like an interesting venture. " Pseudo-fusion dinner menu are slant toward the western palette" - you say that as if that's a negative thing...ha ha. Just smart targeting imo.
