' The Emperor ' - Closed for renovation! True or false?

There are a few instances of this...I recall seeing a closed for renovations sign for the Bright Pearl downtown and the bakery/snack shop Yung Sing may still have their sign posted after being closed for years. More normal is a landlord posting a sign saying they have taken over the premises for rent due. Emperor may or may not be returning....time will tell all. But I would feel better about the chances if the sign indicated a time-frame for reopening

Dragon Dynasty Closed

Found this announcement from the group that operated Dragon Dynasty: "Please note that our Scarborough location is closed due to lease expiration. A new location will be coming soon. Operation of Dragon Dynasty Chinese Catering Services has moved to Elegance Chinese Cuisine and Banquet (part of Dragon Dynasty Group) located at 7130 Warden Avenue, Markham." This sounds like they may reopen in Scarborough? Someone is building a brand new seafood restaurant at Bridlewood Mall in Scarborough....wonder if the dots connect;-)

Sichuan Landscape Chinese Restaurant on Spadina!

Sichuan Landscape has operated since 2012. It replaced another restaurant that was unfortunately named "Number Two Restaurant" before changing its name and subsequently closing.

Dragon Dynasty Closed

Wow, sorry to hear about that. I think the Dragon Dynasty in Scarborough had been around for about 22 years (since 1993). Long a jewel in that part of Scarborough by serving upgraded Cantonese cuisine and known for having dim sum via carts. Always busy, I can recall bypassing it frequently as I hate queuing to eat. Wonder if its another victim of the cut-throat competition among the region's Chinese restaurants. Most restaurants do not survive as long as it has. Have to keep an eye on its expansion projects like Big Mouth Kee, the Grand and Elegance.

Good Sushi at Bay/Dundas: Think Cafe Michi Chirashi...

I suggest calling them to make reservations. When we were there a month ago, I pointed out that their opening time of 11:30 am conflicted with the online info on their website which said 11:00 am. Noting that their website has still not been updated, I suspect a persistent communications disconnect with their website....

Stunned by my own action! - A posting of an AYCE Japanese

I think Spoon & Fork is an upgrade over most other AYCE Japanese places, but their prices are also premium....so one gets what one pays for. I think it's as simple as that. The chain is run by a former Engineer....what is it about Asian cuisine and engineering!?

Thanks for the review. Went to Yutaka today for lunch and enjoyed it very much. I had the Nabeyaki Udon and a roll. Can't comment on the raw fish dishes, but companions said theirs was very fresh. Very comfortable venue for conversations and the service was efficient and friendly. Will return.

Official Alphonso Mangos 2015 discussion

Agree, pretty sure they are the same. Have seen both spellings, although Alphonso is much more common. Interestingly, it is commonly believed that they were named after a guy from Portugal as that country helped establish the variety in India: Afonso de Albuquerque (also spelled Alfonso de....)

Magic Noodle - Richmond Hill Branch

I'm sceptical about what is in the soup noodle broths from Asian restaurants. While it's possible that some do simmer "nutritious" brews, I believe most are some form of chemical cocktails. Since a nice bowl of ramen, pho or wonton noodles are among my favourite orders when dining out, I usually will leave most of the broth in the bowl even if it is very tasty and is kind of hard to do (as I was brought up not to waste food) if uncertain about the broth's positive qualities.

Best Dim Sum in Toronto

Had a chance to try Kwan finally. Very good dim sum experience. Certainly in Crown Princess' ball park, maybe even better. On the pricier side, but given the presentation and location not at all out of line. One could quibble about the har gow (I know CY would). The skin was not that thin and not at all translucent, but it was nevertheless quite tasty. Our bill (tax and tip included) was $47. for 8 items. A few pics attached.

Sam Woo BBQ @ Warden & Bamburgh has "stewed pork hock with black vinegar" on their menu. Apparently not always available though.

Hooray! BC Spotted Prawns Season is here again!

Yeah, but I would want to know more about the supply trail before declaring "false advertising". Brings up the subject about place of origin labling (legal and otherwise) for wild caught seafood. Is it the territorial waters where they are caught, the registry of the ship/boat catching the fish, or even the location of the on-shore processing plant or wholesaler? Like Snarf has said, the prawns don't carry passports.

Hooray! BC Spotted Prawns Season is here again!

If not BC, then from the States where the season starts earlier. This could also be a case like Atlantic Salmon where not all atlantic salmon are from the Atlantic. That is marketing any spotted prawns as "BC spotted prawns" because of the name appeal?

Yeah...also I would trust Maple Yip that they are serving up what they advertise and highly doubt Charles could be hood-winked. Funny though about BC.

Best Dim Sum in Toronto

Safe to consider this is as a central core Toronto listing. I've been to 3 of the 5 top listed. (still need to try Luckee and Kwan.) Living in North Scarborough, we certainly have equal if not better options than the Crown Princess closer to home. I consider ChaLau unique, but not better than the Crown Princess. Never appreciated the love for Mother's, but each to their own. I'm intrigued by Luckee, but am not in any rush to try it out on my own dime. Will likely hit Kwan before getting to Luckee.

Pearl at Bayview Village

I think Prima is referring to Casa Imperial on Steeles, @ Warden. Its sister restaurant, Casa Victoria is further north (Warden & Hwy 7). Both are above average Chinese restaurants.

The popularity of Swiss Chalet seems to be waning in the GTA. Thoughts?

Although it's been a few years since I've been at a SC, partly because most of my favorite locations have closed, I've only positive thoughts about this chain. Where else does one get rewarded for choosing portions (dark meat) that are preferred anyways? I still remember the take-out special of getting 5 quarters of leg meat chicken for the price of a whole chicken.

The good news is that for the geographically challenged CH'ers (and there are many), the new location is close enough to Scarborough to still be considered Scarborough;-)

Thanks for posting this. I was able to locate the 2 Filipino lechon, Sri Lankan and Indian places and also the Sichuan place that was the next stop, but unable to identify the other N. China restaurant "Xinxiang". Did you mean Xin Jiang in Markham?
