The worst Chinese food in torOnto

I have to ask: What have you eaten there that was so bad and led to your first post?

Joanne Kates is leaving the Globe!

+1 Hers was just an opinion...agree or disagree. Only different from CHders in that she was not anonymous.

Dim Sum at Dragon Dynasty - Could be some of GTA's best!

Regal is just around the corner from the Dragon Dynasty. http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/690316 I've not been in a while, but my wife's friends go all the time... It's more of a value option than Dynasty would be. Very Fair Seafood is near Kennedy and Finch, but I don't have first hand experience. Not certain they will be any easier to get into tomorrow though.

Frozen Dim Sum

Yeah, the "urban legend" is that there are a number of these operations turning out boatloads of dim sum for most of the restaurants...somewhere in the wilds of Markham or Scarborough perhaps. No hint that they sell to the public though and no more details..... Talking about "Cantonese" dim sum specifically, not the N. China stuff as there are lots of frozen N. dumpling outlets around.

Alphonso mango available at Price Chopper

Thanks ace123 for the tip! Just returned home with a box....

Frozen Dim Sum

I would like more information on this too as a curiosity . Besides what has been posted on CH, I've been told by numerous persons that external sourcing of dim sum items by restaurants is an extensive practice in TO....that there is a range of quality being supplied (eg. higher end restaurants would source higher end stuff). However nobody could provide more details like where these operations are located and which restaurants are definitely outsourcing (info is almost urban legendish). I imagine certain items like sticky rice and chicken feet are easy to be outsourced, but things like steamed rice rolls would be more difficult.

This would be separate from the frozen dim sum available at supermarkets (where I've yet to come across anything that I've deemed worthy of a repeat purchase). There is a strip plaza behind Very Fair Seafood at Kennedy & Finch that had a storefront selling dim sum including frozen, but I've not been there in a while.

Burger's Priest vs. Holy Chuck vs. Stockyards

Thanks...very interesting link. I appreciate the inclusion of prices for the burgers.

Churrasco on College: Portuguese Chicken Guys & Paul's Churrasco

That would explain the difference. I guess one would actually have to test out the place to see if the special is a rip or an OK deal. I would hope/expect the small salad to come in a set-sized container (and be bigger than the single portion salads) and include an option to choose from the salad menu.

Churrasco on College: Portuguese Chicken Guys & Paul's Churrasco

I get a difference of $2.64...($22.10 ordered separately, $19.46 special). Are we looking at the same online menu?

Kumo Japanese Retsaurant (Etobicoke)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Btw, there's a neat feature on the internet called "search engines":

Ground meat safety (split from Ontario board)

I think being informed is a healthy situation. My own concern about under cooked hamburger meat is based on events reported and my own risk tolerance. Everyone else can make their own decisions about what and how they eat. What would be a shame though is someone getting sick or worse and then thinking..."gee, I didn't know THAT could happen".

Burger's Priest vs. Holy Chuck vs. Stockyards

You are literally trusting that the kitchen is sanitary and that all the meat handlers have good habits. I grew up eating and loving rare burgers, but it's something I've given up since the Washington State incident years ago.

Ground meat safety (split from Ontario board)

The outside of a whole piece is normally cooked before eating, killing any surface bacteria. Cooking just the surface of a hamburger made from the above piece of meat would not 100% kill the same bacteria. Unless you meant comparing eating a whole raw piece of meat with the same piece ground up...then of course no diff.

Ground meat safety (split from Ontario board)

"zero additional risk"? - low, minimal, or reasonable risk maybe, but never zero.

Best nabeyaki udon in Toronto?

I know now what to order when I go to Ema-Tei.

osgoode hall restaurant

I went with a bunch last December (2011). Still a thumbs up from me.

ISO The Best Chinese Rice in TO

I asked someone a long time ago for such a recommendation. I've been buying the suggested "Ox Head" brand from Thailand for many years. I use to have to look for it at the Chinese grocery stores, but have been buying it recently and often on sale at my local Price Chopper. I don't know if it's the best, but we like it. While I have an automatic electric rice cooker, lately I've been cooking my steamed rice using corningware on the stovetop. I've always thought it was a long grain rice though (it's similar to the rice served in most Chinese restaurants).

Cha Lau (formerly Cha Liu)

I am told by my Cantonese speaking friends that "Cha Lau" phonetically translates to "a place that serves dim sum".

Cha Lau (formerly Cha Liu)

New dim sum place between Wellesley and College at 476 Yonge Street. (Renamed and relocated Cha Liu formerly on Yonge just N. of Eglinton). Anyone been yet and how does it compare to nearby Crown Princess and Dynasty in Yorkville...(prices and quality)?

Critique my "must try" list for Toronto!

@ Herne: I guess I'm showing my age a bit by referring to a complete stranger as a "relative newbee". I can relate to a time when dim summing was strictly a week-end only pleasure and you seemed much too young for that. With 10 years of exposure, you would not qualify as a newbee. Still, until you develop an enjoyment for the delightful textures of chicken feet and tripe, I will not consider you yet a hardened veteran....this from someone who winces at the thought of pig's blood (so I'm not that hardened either).

I think you will find some previous discussion about Bamboo here:
http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/816809
I've never been to Bamboo as I'm rarely in that neighborhood, so I have no valid first-hand opinions, but in the referenced thread there is mention of a good comparison to Rol San. Rol San has pretty decent dim sum imo. I'm happy to see relative newbees to dim sum like Herne enjoying and expanding the dim sum lovers world! (Herne: My favorite dim sum items are chicken feet and tripe). That there can be at least decent dim sum found on the Danforth is a good thing.

Dim Sum at Dragon Dynasty - Could be some of GTA's best!

Hi Prima: Thanks to you and the others that self-identified as your dining companions for a rather thorough and stellar description of your common lunch. Perhaps the remaining 2 will post to give it 100% coverage! Glad you guys had no service issues which has been my main complaint about the Dragon Dynasty. Perhaps they beef up the number of staff during the week-ends compared to my normal week-day visits. I think the funny and annoying spectacle of patrons grabbing stuff from the carts before it reaches their tables only happens with a perfect storm of insufficient supply of the good stuff and particularly obnoxious patrons....they have no shame! I agree with your assessments that Yang's is better but with the qualification that one pays for the difference. I keep places like Yang's and LWH in mind for splurges too, but in my case the splurging has been very infrequent...like in many years. Toronto has a very good supply of less high end, but more than adequate (for me) places to enjoy my dim sum. Btw, are you referring to Iron Buddha Tea by "tie guan yin". Cheers!

Toddler friendly (with highchairs) restaurants on West end?

Yeah, reading his online menu that seems to be his shtick. But a group of us go there regularly for lunch and have had zero problems with attitude...if anything the service has been quite good. And if there is a better place in the area that can accommodate 10-15 with a good selection of food and drinks lunchtime at a still reasonable cost (their lunch specials seem to be steadily increasing in price), I would like to know about it.

Best Dim Sum in Richmond Hill / Markham Area?

Regal 16's dim sum is not terrible, but the service is (especially if you are not a regular).

Dim Sum at Dragon Dynasty - Could be some of GTA's best!

Looking forward to your report prima!

Does anyone know where I can get authentic British style Crispy Duck Pancakes in Toronto?

The deep fry finishing is very believable. I guess one could legitimately order "authentic crispy duck pancakes", British style, Hong Kong style, or Peking style (just don't call it Chinese-Canadian style). And end up with the same thing. Love the term "authentic".

Critique my "must try" list for Toronto!

I'm not familiar with a Vietnamese restaurant named Yuen Tung. Where is it?

There is a Chinese restaurant called Yueh Tung on Elizabeth downtown which has "good" lunch time specials....mainly Cantonese/Hakka dishes on rice.

Happy eating!

Does anyone know where I can get authentic British style Crispy Duck Pancakes in Toronto?

Does anyone know if this is how Peking Ducks are mostly prepared in Toronto? Supposedly the meat has less fat and is drier and crispier compared to that of traditionally prepared Peking Duck....that doesn't sound too bad! Deep fried duck doesn't sound as healthy though.....

Chinese foodcourt stalls (authentic cantonese)

I find I can get ridiculous amount of food for the money from the HK style cafes....is that "Cantonese" enough for you? What about the Congee places? Also aren't most of the Scarborough places such as those near Maple Yip just as far away from Yonge/Sheppard as 1st Markham Place? No first hand experience, but the food court at the SE corner of McNicholl & Midland does the 4 dishes, etc routine or at least they use to. There's also a good food court at Metro Square near the IBM buildings at Steeles & Ferrier....not sure if they have the 4 meal specials though.
