What does this "brine" do to you healthwise?? Is it like poison?? I know it's high in sodium but I'm young and my body can handle it. Any other negatives besides the sodium??

Yea, it's some saline solution thing... How is it harmful though?

I don't think it's a brine... It's just cheap chicken, like a bunch of chicken breasts in a big pack for $1.97 a lb ir something like that. Meant for grilling (it says on the package "great for grilling".

Not sure what brining is. I am using the chicken to sautee to eat with rice or pasta etc. Like you would use any other chicken...

Do you ever freeze chicken breasts/thighs etc? or do you only eat fresh chicken?

Do you have any tips how to freeze different portions in one ziplock bag? I don't want to use one separate ziplock bag for each portion. Would the best way be to wrap it in foil and then place in a bag?

I bought some chicken from PAviolions/Vons because it was cheap but now that I cooked it's super salty. I looked on the package and it says Young Chicken Breast with Rib Meat enhanced with up to 10% solution (cane juice, sodium carbonate, lemon juice powder etc)

I didn't realize that it was marinated. It didn't say it was marinated, just "solution"...

I hope this isn't going to be really bad for my health? lol

Just curious... Mainly because I can never finish chicken before the expiration date because it's just me and I eat small portions.

Which grocery store in OC has the best sushi?

Ok, I take it back. I went to Sieu Thi Thuan Phat and got the sushi and it's so gooooood. It's much better than Fresh n Easy and the rice isn't hard or anything. They made it fresh while I was standing there. It's really amazingly good. lol And close to my house too. I'll probably go there a lot for sushi.

$4 for 1 roll or $6 for 2. I chose to get 1 roll because two would be too much food. The roll is freakin huge. I don't know if it's as good as Kabuki's... I can't really tell. It's better than Fresh & Easy though.

Eating well, while being poor.

I don't know but I'm Asian and I'm small naturally. Sometimes I do eat a lot and I still stay under $200 a month without trying or budgeting?? I eat In N Out all the time and I eat 1 pint of ice cream at one sitting.... But I mean, 1 package of pasta is cheap and should last you for a long time even if you eat big portions..... As for bread, it rots before I can finish it. All I can eat is 2 slices a day max.... and it still rots. Milk; I don't drink it because I think it tastes bad (that's probably why I'm so short).

Eating well, while being poor.

$40 a week to spend on groceries is not really poor to be honest.

I live in Southern California. Granted, I'm 4'11 and 88 lbs so I don't eat a whole ton. A few years ago I was making six figures a year and I never spent more than $200 a month in food....??? I mainly shop at Trader Joe's and would buy whatever I felt; pizzas, olive oil, sometimes wild salmon and shrimp and it never came over to more than $200 a month. And I NEVER ate chicken thighs, only chicken breasts, but again I'm VERY petite so $8 worth of organic chicken lasts me for over a week.

That wasn't me being on a budget. It's just how I ate normally without even thinking about price. I'm small so I mean one pack of wild salmon worth $8-$9 probably lasts me all week long or until it starts to smell.

I usually only eat like 5 oz of meat at a time. Not because I'm poor but because I'm petite and that's enough to fill me up. 4 pieces of shrimp would fill me up too...

I don't understand why people think spending under $200 a month per person is frugal. That's how much I eat normally WITHOUT being frugal and without watching my budget and when money is no object. And I still wasn't able to eat it all, the food would rot a lot too.

I also don't eat red meat and pork. Mainly chicken, fish and shrimp.

I don't understand why you have to resort to eat chicken thighs and beans with $160 a month to spend.

I would just eat maybe 4 oz of organic chicken breasts with spaghetti, chopped up broccoli and alfredo sauce (jarred at Vons for $1.99 and one jar lasts me 7 days).... and that would fill me up as a dinner (again this is not me even TRYING to be cheap). This is how I eat normally. $140 a month is enough where you don't need to resort to eating thighs (unless you have a big appetite). And I live in California btw, not somewhere in the middle of nowhere.

Which grocery store in OC has the best sushi?

Ok..... I had Kabuki's tonight, it came down to $5.17 with tax for one spicy tuna roll which I guess isn't extremely expensive compared to grocery store sushi places.

Hope I didn't offend anyone with the Viet grocery store thing.. I just have an aversion to those type of places because I was forced to go with my my mother and grandma as a child and teen (when I was a teen I would have much rather stayed home) and thus I have an aversion to Asian grocery stores. Mainly because I don't get along with her (and no longer have a relationship with her by choice). I just associate Asian grocery stores with my sucky childhood and horrid teenage years. I don't ever want to step inside one again.

Which grocery store in OC has the best sushi?

I don't have a membership to Sams or Costco. I'm single (and intend to stay that way) indefinitely so I have no need to buy anything in bulk. I was wondering in particular about Vons/Pavilions or Fresh N Easy. Or maybe Albertsons.

Which grocery store in OC has the best sushi?

I didn't know a Vietnamese grocery store would have sushi. I'm actually Vietnamese but I don't shop at Vietnamese grocery stores at all, I prefer regular American places like Trader Joe's and Vons etc. I don't like going into Viet places even though I'm Viet... I just find the stores not as upscale and the people too loud... It just sort of irritates me. I don't like the environment even though, yes I am Asian. I prefer regular chains.

Does anyone know if the Vons/Pavilions sushi any good? Or is the rice super hard and sour?

Which grocery store in OC has the best sushi?

I'm talking about refrigerated rolls... I know it's not high quality or the tastiest but I'm lazy and I often see refrigerated sushi at Pavilions when grocery shopping and it looks tempting. I live close to Bella Terra. I may sound super lazy but I think even driving to Harbor is too far. I want to stick around places within 5 minutes of my house... lol Going to Costa Mesa will take at least 15 minutes and then I have to drive back too and that's another 15 min... I just want to get the sushi when doing my regular grocery shopping, not drive somewhere out of the way. I'm not one of those people who will drive to another city just for food (unless it's right next to me); I'm lazy.

I prefer to get the sushi from a grocery store right next to my house. The ones within 5 minutes to me are : Fresh & Easy, Paviilions, there is another Vons 5 min away, Trader Joe's (more like 10 minutes away but I can handle that, at least it's still in HB). I was just wondering out of these places which ones are the best for refrigerated sushi rolls?

Which grocery store in OC has the best sushi?

I'm not picky and I'll eat almost anything as long as it's not too bad. Yes, I already know that grocery store sushi doesn't compare to a restaurant but I don't care.

Out of all the common grocery stores; Albertsons, Ralphs, Fresh & Easy, Trader Joe's, who has the best sushi?

Somewhere in Huntington Beach please and not Whole Foods in Irvine because it's too far. I'm lazy and I only feel like driving to stores within 2 miles of where I live ; Trader Joe's, Ralphs, Albertsons, Fresh & Easy etc

I am especially curious about the Fresh & Easy sushi... what is that like?

What about the Pavilions on Beach blvd?

Need EASY spaghetti recipe using trader joe's jar sauce and ground beef [moved from General Topics]

I am making it right now... wow, it actually tastes DELICIOUS! I never actually cooked spaghetti with browned ground meat before ever! Mainly because I was trying to cut out red meat out of my diet but for some reason I just felt like eating traditional spaghetti today. It tastes really good even though I used jar sauce. I used dried basil because that's all I have....

What does adding red wine do? How does it change or add to the taste? Maybe I will try that next time. Don't have red wine handy because I don't drink.

This is so quick and easy to make. Does it make a difference if you simmer the sauce for 2 hours etc? I read a lot of recipes and some of them required simmering for 2 hours etc. I am too lazy to go through all of that... Does it taste way better that way?

Need EASY spaghetti recipe using trader joe's jar sauce and ground beef [moved from General Topics]

I DON'T want to make the sauce from scratch. I am lazy. I don't have canned tomatoes or tomato puree and don't have the energy to go to the store to buy some. I just want to use my jar of Trader Joe's Italian Sausage sauce, ground beef, onions and garlic...

Will it work if I just sautee the ground beef with onions and garlic and then just toss in a bit of the jarred sauce? How long do I simmer the beef and sauce together? Or you have a better idea let me know. And no, please don't suggest I "make my own sauce" by getting can of tomato chunks or canned paste. I just want to use what I have right now. Thank you!

Hwo to separate frozen fish?

I like to buy fish that is already frozen from trader joes etc. Only problem is that there are usually 2-3 fillet's or pieces in one frozen pack. I am single and live alone. I only want to defrost and eat just ONE piece and re-freeze the rest. I am not strong enough to break the pieces apart (I'm a tiny person and I'm weak). How do I separate the pieces without defrosting the whole thing??

Have you tried the new Waterfront Bistro frozen fish from Safeway?

I noticed my Pavilions grocery store (Safeway) has frozen salmon, tilapia etc already marinated. They are single serve items so all you gotta do is put them in the oven. I tried it and I thought it was ok. I was wondering if anyone else tried them as well and if so what your opinion is?

They also sell frozen Mahi Mahi and salmon at my local Trader Joe's but the only thing is that the packages there are so big. I always eat alone so I only need one serving. The Trader Joe's packages are always 2-3 servings and I don't know if I can break off the pieces in order to refreeze it. I think I tried it once but I wasn't strong enough to break up the frozen fish... Any thoughts?
