Favorite Sushi on LI (Nagashima, Jericho)

I do agree with you, that the fish at Nagashima tends to be not as fresh as it should or sushi grade. Also, the service stinks there. I have not had a fishy odor to sushi myself and if that was the case I would have left. That is unacceptable for what we pay.

Also, if you want good sushi on Long Island, try Kotobuki in Roslyn, Mumon in Garden City or Matsuya in Great Neck. The places that you listed are average, at best.

This list is on descending order of deliciousness.

Mumon...hands down BEST Japanese on Long Island

My wife and I live on Long Island but usually go into the city (Manhattan) to get the best Japanese to places like Blue Ribbon Sushi in Soho or Tomoe'. If we want the next best thing, we have found that Kotobuki in Roslyn is pretty close and very affordable despite trendiness of spot. Low and behold, we have found a Japanese place that is equivelant in quality and flavor to the finest NYC Japanese spots (short of Momofuku). It is called MUMON.

Mumon, is located in Garden City on Franklin Avenue. it is not easy to find since the parking lot is behind the strip mall which it is located in. We made a reservation for 2 last night (Saturday) and were greeted by a modern Japanese spacious, great room with a young Asian hostess. The decor is wide open with high ceilings and rich, dark colors and textures. The bar lounge as well as some of the booths in the back (left side) are soft and plush with lots of pillows, allowing us to immediately relax.

We were given a free sample from the chef of the Japanese chicken nuggets with asparagus and some sort of bechemel on the side right as we sat. It was delicious.

We ordered:
Lobster Risotto
Crunch Roll (spicy yellow tail, panko crunchies, some other deliciousness)
Lobster Avocado Roll
King Crab Roll
Toro Sashimi
Salmon Skin
House Ginger dressing Salad
Mocchi Ice Cream (ice cream with sticky rice exterior).

The Lobster Risotto was perfectly cooked and seasoned and the lobster tail was perfectly fresh and generous sized. The rolls were generously portioned and incredibly creative with lots of heat probably from Sriracha. Toro tasted like heaven and as if it were caught a few minutes before it was melting over the sides of my tongue.

Cons: For some reason the place was not crowded at all. We left at 8:30pm on a Saturday night and there were 4-5 tables taken out of about 30 possible. This might be since they are relatively new as they opened this spring. Or it may be the strange location a about mile outside of the town. The busboys would fill my water after each sip I took....literally which got a bit annoying. But I guess if they were more busy that would not have been the case.

We will 100% be returning ....soon!

I highly recommend Mumom even for the most discerning and difficult to please palates.

Besito in Roslyn was a waste of $$$$$

Have you ever eaten in El Parador in on 34th street,
what about Maya on 1rst in the mid 60's
Rosa Mexicano, again on first avenue at 58th street,
Zarela on 2nd avenue between 50 and 51?

Well try those and then tell me what you think of the food at Besito. I mean no sacrasm at all in this post, sometimes these posts can be mileading. I only am interested in hearing your opinion, if you had a similar point of reference to the foodie gold standard joints.

Besito in Roslyn was a waste of $$$$$

Nasty is not a fair adjective for the quality of the food. You are correct!

This shall serve as a REPRINT: The food is not nasty. It is average and the sort of food, and I am sure that some people on the board will understand that I mean by this, where everything starts tasting the same.

So the food was a 5-6/10.

Better grade meat, less is more also I would add less spices and add the cilantro and fresh produce closer to the end of the cooking process in an effort to freshen things up.

Besito in Roslyn was a waste of $$$$$

thank you.....gracias!

Besito in Roslyn was a waste of $$$$$

My wife and I ate at Besito over the weekend. We were happy to get seated without a reservation on a Friday night after only waiting a few minutes (good v. bad sign?).

The server was very a very polite young Hispanic man with lots of energy and seemed to knwo the menu very well. We had the fresh guacamole prepared tableside in the large mortar and pestil although I am sure there is a mexican name for this device.

The food was average at best. We ordered the ceviche, which was very low quality to start. Then I had the flank steak tacos and my wife had an enchilada.

Bottom lin: Dont eat there, save your coin for some tasty Mexican. If you are looking for Dos Caminos quality food like we were then keep looking. Nasty food with cruise ship or dorm cafeteria quality despite nice atmosphere.
