Mad Hatter in Durham?

I'd add Vin Rouge to that list. They have a fabulous weekend brunch - fresh, well prepared, and usually not completely mobbed.

best Mexican in Durham/Chapel Hill?

The La Vaquita on Hillsborough Rd. is in a strip mall - and it definitely has indoor, sit down tables. The one with the cow on the roof has only picnic tables.

best Mexican in Durham/Chapel Hill?

I really like La Vaquita on Hillsborough Rd. in Durham. It's small and not fancy - but it is definitely sit down.

It's owned by the same family that have the one with the cow on the roof.

Vegan-friendly restaurants in Chapel Hill, NC?

Based on this, we'll give it another shot! We had a so/so experience years ago at the old location - but this really makes me want to see what's new! I expect we caught them on an off night...

Raleigh area - authentic bagels

http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/7520... is my query from a few weeks ago. I've discovered that a Southern Season has frozen bagels from NY. They may be the best (but freezing doesn't do them favors...)

What's open on Christmas day? Durham/CH/Raleigh area

Mirage in Raleigh is open for Christmas Eve (dinner) and then for drinks, etc. on Christmas Day (10 is the opening, I think).

Their sushi is awesome - sit at the bar, and let the sushi chef guide you!

Open and delicious in Asheville on Christmas eve/Christmas Day

Oh yeah - we got stuck doing that at Thanksgiving (family wouldn't go) and ended up with Chinese Takeout for dinner (after a not edible lunch).

Open and delicious in Asheville on Christmas eve/Christmas Day

Have been to Vincenzo's on Christmas Eve - it was quite festive, and definitely passable food (I don't remember what we had, but that it was pretty good).

Any suggestions? Bonus points if they have awesome lox.

Thanksgiving in Greensboro

Thanks for the suggestions - they both look fabulous! The elder member of our family who usually cooks Thanksgiving isn't up for it and my home is too far for travel - so eating out it is! If there are other suggestions, please keep them coming! We might even be open to pickup of a well done Thanksgiving dinner!

Thanksgiving in Greensboro

Any suggestions for Thanksgiving dinner (early afternoon, probably) in the Greensboro-High Point, NC area? We will probably be in the range of 10 people, including 2 middle school-ish kids. Much as I would love somewhere that has funky food, most of the group will be looking for normal turkey-day fare that won't absolutely break the bank.

Thanks in advance!!

Indian Food Truck in Durham, NC

If you ever have a question, check the twitter feed: http://twitter.com/indianfoodtruck

Looks like the folks that did tacos out of it have a new truck (or at least there's a new one where they used to be). Hopefully this means Indian Food will be full time! We tried it recently, and the portions had increased as had the menu variety. Very good!

Best Breakfast in Wilmington area?

Sweet and Savory (off Eastwood just before the beach)
Kefi (also on Eastwood just before the beach)
Causeway Cafe (just over the bridge on the right - go early or be prepared to wait - but it's worth it)
Middle of the Island (fabulous when they were on Wrightsville Beach - haven't been since they moved).

Pie (Orange, Alamance, or Durham NC)

Have you tried the one from Scratch? It's coconut cream with a chocolate crust. I tend not to be quite as enamored with her pies as others are, but I REALLY like that one (and some assorted other ones).

I'm almost positive that the China Express noodles are machine made in house. The extra spicy Jan Pong is fabulous...

1 - Try China Express near the intersection of 54 and 55 in the park. Most of their menu is typical strip mall Chinese food, but their noodles are GOOD. Cheap and tasty.

2 - Agreed re: coming to Durham. Lots of good choices. The red taco bus on Hillsborogh Rd. at night is one of my favorites.

Prepared Food Markets / Healther Food Restaurants - Greensboro, NC

The Jerusalem Market on High Point Rd. in Greensboro is a cool place. Good sandwiches, and an assortment of other foodie/snack stuff.

You got to be kidding me (Crooks Corner, Chapel Hill, NC)

I'm in exactly the same boat. I certainly believe the posters that say it can be done - I'm just not inclined to go back. Too many restaurants that I really love that are closer to me.

Shrimp burger in Wilmington?

If you ever find yourself on Harker's Island, the Seaside Galley makes a pretty good one (and it's not expensive!).

Shrimp burger in Wilmington?

I thought fried shrimp on a bun was a downeast shrimpburger? I've only had the chopped up shrimp patty once (at Watts Grocery, and it was fabulous, but sadly no longer on the menu!). Any place to get that variety in Raleigh/Durham?

You got to be kidding me (Crooks Corner, Chapel Hill, NC)

I had the same experience regarding the shrimp and grits. Our server was rather rude in his refusal to accomodate. His perogative, sure - but there was certainly a better way to say no.

We've been - we likely won't go back. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. I think there are too many truly exceptional restaurants in the area to waste time or money on something that I found to be sub par.

Need Boone, NC Recs

We went this past weekend. For a lot of reasons, we ended up only eating one meal out (I was on the course on Saturday for lunch waiting for photo ops, and we stayed with friends Saturday night - so dinner and breakfast were fabulous, but in someone's home). Friday night, we did try the Coyote Kitchen. We pondered trying Hob Nob Cafe, but it looked crowded and we were both really tired from the drive. We definitely will next time - along with Melanie's kitchen which comes highly recommended by our friends.

We loved the Coyote Kitchen. We sat outside for dinner, and it was almost chilly. A nice change from 100+ degree days. We started with Fried Plaintains and the Pineapple Habanaro salsa (hot, but not too hot). My other half had the Isabella Burrito, which he pronounced good, but wished he could taste the pineapple more and wished the tempeh had a bit more texture. The thing was HUGE! We also had a veggie side to share. I had the Moab Boat, which was unusual but good (and enough for breakfast the next AM). I had the Cranberry salsa, and think I would have enjoyed the pineapple more. All in all - a really good experience. They will make anything on their menu vegetarian for you. Service was reasonably quick, the price was VERY reasonable, and it was a relaxing and enjoyable dinner. Not fancy, but good. We'd definitely go back!

Is the noodle shop going to be the place owned by the former chef at Duck and Dumpling? If so, three cheers!

Charlotte to Wilmington

I adore the sauce that comes in the squirt bottles from Tower 7 - is that the California hot sauce or something else? One of my favorite restaurants - nothing fancy, but always satisfying and fresh.

Need help finding a couple of ingredients in the Triangle

For the flour, I'd call a Southern Season. They might have it. This place: http://www.capriflavors.com/ might be worth a call too.

For the Shiro Dashi, I'd call this place: Toyo Shokuhin & Gift Shop 748 E Chatham St Ste L Cary, NC 27511-6928 (919) 319-1620 I've not found them particularly personable (or price reasonable) when going in, but they do have a great selection of Japanese products.

Need Boone, NC Recs

OK Chowhounds - haevn't seen anything recent on this one.

We're headed to Boone late this month to celebrate a birthday and for my other half to do an ungodly hard bike ride. Looking for dinner places for 2 nights, a lunch place for me on Saturday and both of us on Sunday.

We strongly prefer local and organic, and do not eat beef or pork. Love fish and vegetarian. Ethnic food is great. A nice-ish place for one night would be awesome (but we're NOT looking for $100+ dinners). Where should we go? We're staying in either Boone or Blowing Rock (to be determined) and he will be riding out of Valle Crucis.

Thanks!
