vinoroma's Profile

2 nights in Rome

I love roscioli, flavio, cesare all - but if one dinner is roscioli and i have choose btw f and c, definitely go with c. Especially if wine is important - sorry tavoleromane, but you can't even compare f's winelist (well, shelf) with c's. C has the best wine list in rome, as i have reported here: http://www.vinoroma.com/?p=281 and c's outdoor seating is nicer than f.

Trying to recall the name of this fantastic place in Rome

il convivio?

Late dinner Sunday night near Termini

life is no better than gusto.

To our CH friends in Bologna

just read that rigoletto in reggiolo is severely damaged and will remain closed for 6 months.

Wine bars in Rome?

they opened last week!

Wine bars in Rome?

There are two reasons i didn't add Barrique to my list - their "resistance" to add the excellent Italian sparkling wines like Franciacorta or Trentadoc (a very arrogant "Champagne is better" was the answer to me - this is of course a topic to discuss, but makes the place less recommendable to tourists, who might want to get to know Italian wines better). And the smoke smell. I have never seen anyone smoke, but i guess it happens in the later hours, because whenever i was there, that was all i could smell. But maybe now after the renovation they have gotten rid of that.

Wine bars in Rome?

Ciao cortez,
Small plate menus are not a tjing here yet like in the US, but in most wine bars you will find plates of salumi and cheeses offered as an informal dinner option. Some wine bars have so called aperitivo hours (usually starting around 6-7 and ending 8-9, depending on the place) where you get a glass of wine (or other alcoholic drink) and have a buffet to graze from (often wiith not very high quality).
Some wine bars i love going to are:
Palatium (closest to you, spanish steps)(only wines from the region lazio)
Sorpasso (prati)
Al vino al vino (monti)
Tre scalini (monti - very crowded but fun)
Il goccetto (historic center)(best by the glass choice)
Bacocco (trastevere, about the only place i like in the area)
Enoteca provincia romana (piazza venezia)(only wines from around rome)
There are more, of course, but either a bit more out of the way for a 4 day visit, or i don't care for them as much.
Happy drinking!

best gelato in Rome....please!!

You are welcome. Please don't call me neither Vin, nor Vinny, as neither are my name. And no, it is not vino either. If vinoroma is too long to type, just leave it out - a reply already shows it is directed at me. Some of us who know each other personally sometimes refer to each other with first names on chow (Katie, Maureen, Elizabeth, etc.) but in my case you can't deduct my first name from my nick.

Supermarket /halal produce

good list. As i thought, most are doner kebab type places, with a couple indian places thrown in, which might not be enough to sustain on and also will not give OP an accurate picture of the traditional foods. But maybe it is not his intention, so all is good. BUt one important remark: I know for a fact that Taverna Ripetta on the list is NOT halal. let alone the fact that halal requires an appropriate butchering of beef & lamb, they actually serve pork. No halal restaurant will ever let pork onto its premises.

Supermarket /halal produce

basic ingredients can be bought at any supermarket, small grocery shop, etc, you will find many of them. Halal meats are a bit more difficult, here in Rome there are some butchers, esp. around the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele area, where you can buy halal meat (but, can you cook it, will you be staying in an apartment?) but I am not aware of any halal restaurants (not saying it doesn't exist). Even if you do find some halal restaurants, I am afraid it won't be enough. You might want to stick with regular restaurants and just avoid meat dishes, which won't be difficult.

best gelato in Rome....please!!

hmm, you replied to my post but I am not Vinny... if you meant me, vinoroma - yes, there are some - Torce and fata morgana are faves, ciampini and gracchi for certain flavors, vice and neve di latte are good but somehow i don't make it to them too often (out of my way), won't say no to teatro del gelato, either.
I do not like the bad-quality/industrial mix using but much hyped places like Giolitti, Fassi, San Crispino. Can't say Grom uses industrial stuff, but still don't like the consistency of their icecream and find the flavors muted. Don't even want to talk about blue ice chain.

best gelato in Rome....please!!

a tourist favorite. I find it despicable (tried once, years ago).

Thanks to all Italy Board Chowhound posters

lisa, great report till now, keep on writing! :)

Restaurants in Rome, Florence, Santa Margherita Lugure, Piemonte. A trip summation.

great report, thanks for sharing. This is the second report/mention ever of Pace del Palato, might have to check it out.

Rome Itinerary - Any and All Thoughts Welcome - How Did I Do?

Glass is a one michelin star fine dining establishment that has great food, lovely service and a modern decor. Ad hoc is very homey looking (wine bottles everywhere, wood) or tuscan looking trattoria with ambitions and might appeal to the italy visitor more (by its cover).

Try metamorfosi then!

Culinary Loft[ Rome

I think that gives us a good frame of reference, thank you.

Culinary Loft[ Rome

both of you only wrote about culinary loft, which I do not know. Can you write about your other eating experiences, too, so we get a better feel?

Rome Itinerary - Any and All Thoughts Welcome - How Did I Do?

yes. it is simple, family run, with a great vibe, full to the gills, offers good food and is close to the Cavalieri.

Rome Itinerary - Any and All Thoughts Welcome - How Did I Do?

For your first night try Sagra del vino on via marziale, where it just branches out from medaglie d'oro. I think it is exactly what you want. Have your hotel make a reservation during the day though (earlier not necessary).
All others: lovely choices!

First Night in Rome - Help me decide where to eat!

I don't understand why you are debating other places when
a) Gensola is on your list
b) you can literally fall into it (and out again to bed afterwards) after your long flight
c) it is friday.

Lunch between Rome and Positano

are you calling correct? as in:
(your international access code, smth like 00)39077565428
39 is the country code for italy and the 0 of the area code does NOT get omitted in Italy, never.

Five Weeks in Rome Environs

You might be a bit handicapped, but that is part of the fun! Where abouts are you from? I lived in atlanta for a year. Howdy, y'all, hon - all part of my vocabulary for some time :)

Artichokes in Italy

try the artichoke salad at Roscioli.

Testaccio Market in Rome will move in Spring 2012

I know. Nothing about that.

Testaccio Market in Rome will move in Spring 2012

"L'inaugurazione vera e propria con la presenza delle istituzioni - il sindaco Alemanno e gli assessori Bordoni e Ghera - si dovrebbe tenere invece nel mese di giugno."

Ischia help requested

I usually would never send someone from chow to tripadvisor, but in this case it might be helpful: on the roman forum of trip advisor there is a user called abritinischia and i think he is qualified to give you good advice. Note that you should either contact him directly or post on the ischia forum to attract his attention, not on the rome forum.

Rome - Reservations needed? (Salumeria Con Cucina Roscioli, La Campana, L'Arcangelo)

It was a terrible error, steve :) we should have carbonara and drink wine together sometime....

"Vintage" 2008 Olive oil served in 2012--question for the Italian "experts" (??) [moved from Italy]

He might be confusing It with allium ursinum, which we do have here, and forage, and use. Allium tricoccum, widely called ramp, exists only in north america.

Caveat emptor - Hostaria Nerone

I think gensola is not about the fish of the day, prepared simply, but more about the antipasti and pasta they prepare with the fish. I think asking for the (whole) fish of the day may take you to another road, which might as well be good, but not what i think is their strength.
