What are you baking these days? October 2011, part deux [old]
I just made three mini apple tarts with the wonderful Cook's Illustrated vodka pie dough (I do love it so) and an apple cobbler. I'm trying to use up all the apples I've had sitting around. And after all this there is still apples left over to use!
Brandy suggestions
I received a bottle of brandy for my birthday yesterday and I'm not quite sure what kind of drinks (if any) to make with it. I checked around on CH for ideas but didn't come across much. I don't drink a lot of liquor (mostly beer and wine for me, the odd vodka drink here and there) so brandy is pretty new to me. Is it best drank straight up or mixed? Warm drink recipes for cool autumn/winter nights would also be nice.
Looking forward to suggestions from you experienced brandy connoisseurs out there. Thanks.
Apple pie filling: to prebake or not
I personally don't pre bake my apples but I've been seeing people do this more and more and I'm kin dof curious know to try it out and see what, if any, the difference is.
What are you baking these days? October 2011, part deux [old]
I'm baking two pies today, both apple (one for me and one for neighbor), using the Cook's Illustrated vodka pie dough recipe. I've also been making a lot of fudge. Thinking about maybe doing some Halloween sugar cookies to bring to work as well.
What's for Dinner # 112 [old]
Oh, how I love when people attach pictures of their food! This curry looks so good. May I have to try this one out. We don't eat nearly enough curry in this house.

It's either going to left over rabbit stew from last night or chicken merguez sausages with baked potatoes and salad. First time trying chicken merguez..curious to find out how tasty they will be.
Cactus Wine
Yes, well like I said, I was wondering if anyone was familiar with it and could help me out.
How do you store/archive your recipes?
Honestly, I have no idea. But I always seem to be able to open up the folder to just the right spot. It's an organized mess. :)
Cactus Wine
No, nothing at all like pulque. It was a clear, rose color. Not milky at all. After a little google searching, I'm starting to think perhaps it was prickly pear wine.
It was made here in Quebec, Canada. I'm starting to think I hallucinated the whole thing.
ATK/Cook's Illustrated Vodka Pie Crust
Oohh, sounds interesting! I'll definitely be trying this technique out. Thanks for sharing!
ATK/Cook's Illustrated Vodka Pie Crust
Obviously I misspoke. It happens. I WAS pleasantly surprised. Better?
Jeesh.
Cactus Wine
Many years ago I had the opportunity to try a bottle of cactus wine. It had been home made by a friend of a friend. Now, I'm interested in trying it again but it seems to be extremely hard to find. Everyone I mention it to has never heard of such a thing or doesn't even believe that is real. I remember it to be very delicious and just sweet enough. Any chowhounders familiar with cactus wine?
Would love to be able to buy a bottle or four somehow!
ATK/Cook's Illustrated Vodka Pie Crust
Strange to come across this post. I recently found this recipe while looking for The Best Ever Pie Crust. and I have to say...it is amazingly perfect. I've made it a few times now for apple pies and mincemeat pie and I wasn't pleasantly surprised. Plus I love asking people what they think the secret ingredient is. :)
Have you tried it yet? How did it turn out?
What's for Dinner # 112 [old]
It is indeed! My s/o is an avid moose hunter and I'm actually expecting him back from his week long hunting trip up north. I figured using the rest of last year's moose for this stew was a nice welcome back gift.
How do you store/archive your recipes?
I have a large folder filled with hand-written recipes, newspaper cut outs and magazine pull outs. It's not alphabetical or colored coded or organized in any way.
I also have a small notebook with written recipes.
Home remedies for colds
Not necessarily a "soup" per se...however you boil it in a pot on the stove and drink it from a mug..so why not? :)

Irish Stew (no lamb, just moose) and I've been eyeballing a few white bread recipes, which I have to admit is a bit ambitious for 6pm in the evening but the idea is just sooo nice.

What's for Dinner? part 78 (Old)
The usual Sunday night fare...a big heaping shepard's pie topped with panko bread crumbs and a cranberry and apple maple sugar pie for dessert.
What hormones, genetic alterations, antibiotics, and false information have you heard about in the food supply?
Thanks for sharing this smaki.
Oil 101
Whew, I thought I was the only one.
I use olive oil, vegetable/canola, and peanut oil depending on what we're cooking or frying. Hopefully someone will respond with some basic oil 101!
What's for Dinner? Part 76 (Old)
Chicken Alfredo Pasta with a side of salad and garlic bread and maybe a few glasses of my favorite red wine.
What was the worst food you HAD to eat as a kid?
Roasting them sounds good, since one of the main things I dislike about them is how soggy they seem to be..they even TASTE soggy! But roasting them...I may have to look into this one and the salad does sound awfully good. Thanks for sharing flourgirl..if my opinion changes I'll be sure to let you know!
What was the worst food you HAD to eat as a kid?
Luckily (and thankfully) I was never forced to eat anything but brussel sprouts were and still are the worst food ever. I've yet to find a recipe to make me change my mind!
Would you eat Gumbo or a Shrimp Beignet for Breakfast?
I definitely would try it! It sounds different and delicious.
Weekly Menu Planning - Do you plan?
"seems kind of silly to have a bunch of opened, half-used packages of pasta lying around"
Yes...and I'm guilty of that to a ridiculous degree. I must have four or five packages of different pasta opened in my cupboard at any given time..and of course I always forget the box of spaghetti is already opened..grab it from the wrong end and wind up having to pick up spaghetti from the floor.
Shall we talk about brownies again? Your favorite recipes and why they are favorites?
I just made some brownies yesterday and was so thrilled with the end result. The recipe came from a little cookbook sent to me by my mother that is basically just a collection of local Hawaiian dishes from her local community.
The brownie recipe was Peanut Butter Fudge Brownies. Ridiculously easy to do and they turned out perfectly crunchy on the edges and chewy in the middle without too much of a peanut butter taste (not a big fan of PB but even I loved these). If anyone wants the recipe I'll type it up.
