Anywhere in Brooklyn or Manhattan to get hush puppies?

Better late than never- the same friend is having a sequel to the original brunch (it turned out great), so I'll have another chance. Thanks for the reply!

I've always preferred the Chelsea branch.

What about the Bronx?

I used to love Patricia's when I was a student at Einstein. The grilled squid appetizer and pastas, as well as the fantastic brick oven pizzas are the standouts there. Don't get the non-brick-oven pizza.

Other than that, the pickings are a bit slim around there though. Ann Claire's is great for sandwiches, but it's not an eat-in place. Coals wasn't there when I was a student (I graduated in 1998). I wish those Vietnamese places had been there back in the day! I do seem to remember a few decent Caribbean places near the 2 train, but I don't remember the names.

New List of Oyster Happy Hours?

Weather Up on Vanderbilt Ave in Brooklyn has oysters for $12 a dozen (I think $8 for 1/2 dozen) and fried chicken for 5 pieces for $8 on Thursdays and Sundays. The cocktails and chicken are better than the oysters though.

If you don't mind coming to Brooklyn, I love the version at Chavella's.

Stumptown Coffee, thanks for the tip!

Stumptown coffee is also served at Sit and Wonder, on Washington Ave at St Marks.

Peter Luger - Slightly off topic

I agree with steakrules. The tomato and onion is a ripoff. From my experience having been there at least a half-dozen times, it's a regular yellow onion and an anemic tomato sliced fairly thickly. That's it. I'd say stick to what they do well. Bacon appetizer, porterhouse steak, creamed spinach, fries and onion rings. I never have room for dessert, but the coffee comes with the big bowl of delicious schlag also, which kind of makes it a dessert.

I also have never had a problem with the service.

Horse meat in NY - Balthazar?

There's likely to be more antibiotics in most commercial beef than in a pet horse.

Horse meat in NY - Balthazar?

It's illegal to transport meat across the border no matter what the purpose unless you're an importer, which I think needs some kind of special license.

Nonetheless, I do it all the time (just brought some smoked reindeer back from Stockholm a few months ago). It's easy, and if you get caught, the worst that will probably happen is they'll take it away from you.

the best bagel in nyc

Yes, Bagel Hole are the best! They have the right chew, the right crust, and they're not sweet like the repugnant H&H bagels. And they're true bagel size, not those ridiculous monsters that Ess-a-Bagel serves up. This is important not just for portion size, but for the right ratio of crust to inside. All other bagels disappoint after Bagel Hole. However, another good option is Terrrace Bagels in Windsor Terrace. The key there is to get the "mini bagels" which are close to a normal bagel size.

Best bialys: Coney Island Bagels and Bialys.

Those are my two favorites. Balthazar has the absolute best baguette.

The Number One BEST Thai Restaurant in NYC

This is definitely the best. I first found it through Chowhound back when Jim Leff was running the site (about 10 years ago, I think).

Cobra Beer

I haven't tried that beer, but I would look around Lexington and 27th/28th or in Jackson Heights if I were you. Their website only lists places in England to get it, but I did find it on this list of importers of beer into the U.S.:
http://www.spotch.com/~robjen/beer/br...

Here's their contact info (from that site):
Cobra Brewing Company Alexander House
14-16 Peterborough Rd.
London SW6 3BN, England, U.K.
V: +44 (0)2077/31 62 00
F: +44 (0)2077/31 62 01
Importer: Cobra Beer Co.

You could try calling them or writing them to ask where in the U.S. it's available.

That's the one! They aren't officially open yet, but they've been selling a limited selection. We've gotten great stuff there.

Horrible experience at Plan B

Le Gamin, also on Vanderbilt (near Bergen) would have been a better bet for sandwiches or salads. They also have good coffee. I live in the neighborhood, and despite the fact that I pride myself on knowing all the local spots inside and out, I've refused to try that awful looking place known as Plan B. I'm glad to know that my suspicions were well-founded.

I tried them 2 nights ago. I got the ground short rib ones. They were very juicy and tasty, quite good. But the best I've had recently were the ones my wife got in Chelsea Market (forgot the name of the purveyor- I will find out and get back to you).

DiFara. Take the Q train to Ave J. It's a block from there. Go for lunch on a weekday to avoid the crazy lines.

I think I've bought it at the Food Emporium on 14th St just off the southeast corner of Union Square.

Great stuff.

Anywhere in Brooklyn or Manhattan to get hush puppies?

A friend of mine is having a "Southern Fried Brunch" this weekend and wants hush puppies for it, but no one wants to make them. Where's a good place in Brooklyn or (preferably downtown) Manhattan to get them?
