Hawkins cheezies ...any sightings in T.O?

I am originally from out West and grew up with Hawkins Cheezies. The Shoppers Drug Mart at Yorkdale always have them. I think the Avenue Road/Lawrence store normally carries them. Other than SDM they are difficult to find. They are delicious-just don't read the package to see the calories or you will faint!

William Ashley Warehouse Sale 2011

I agree it has gone downhill. I have been going to the Ashley sale for over twenty years and I found it disappointing last year and this year. I bought a blanket last year for $15. This year, same blanket $25. I found high prices on some items and in general not a lot of new and interesting stuff. Having said all that, there are still some bargains to be found. I bought a Le Creuset cast iron baking dish for $69.

Frank's Kitchen

Last night I took a friend for her birthday to Frank's Kitchen. The only time we could get a table was 8:30. We were seated right away but our waiter disappeared. It took over twenty minutes to order a bottle of wine and another ten to finally get a glass of it. Right after pouring the wine he asked us if we were ready to order. We ordered, fully expecting to be given some time to enjoy the wine and unwind. Imagine our surprise when our meals came ten minutes later! We thought we were supposed to be on a celebratory evening out, not a "dine and dash".
I had red snapper and my friend had the lamb. The portions are small but we both thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The food is excellent.
The owner had called earlier to reconfirm our reservation. She mentioned there would be a complimentary dessert for the birthday girl. The waiter either knew nothing about it or forgot. Luckily my friend went to the washroom and I was able to straighten it out. The dessert was blueberry cream brulee and it was also delicious. Dinner for two, including taxes, with a bottle of red wine was $117.00. Very reasonable with lots of complimentary extras-interesting bread and dips to start, soup shooters and miniature chocolate truffles. Nice details and touches. The ambience is nice too. When you mostly hang out in North Toronto, it was lots of fun to hit Little Italy on a Friday night.

PIzza Dough Toronto

Grand Cheese on Orfus has a sign beside their pizza dough-Do Not Freeze. The reason is that the pizza dough has already been frozen. The last time I went in, I asked if they had any more of the regular pizza dough and the person working there told me yes, we have more . He asked me if I was in a hurry to use it because the dough was frozen.

Wanted: Brunch Buffet for Mother's Day...fancy pants please!

I concur with your being underwhelmed with The King Edward brunch. I was also there last month. I took my best friend for her birthday. My biggest criticism is this-the main courses were chicken, salmon, lamb, and beef wellington. My friend does not like lamb or rare beef. She asked if they had a piece of the Wellington that was more on the medium side. They did not. I had some and the crust was a soggy mess. A prime rib roast would be so much better. The setting was wonderful and the rest of the food was good but I would try something different next time. In other words, I cannot highly recommend The King Eddy.

William Ashley Warehouse Sale 2010

I have been going to this sale for 18 years! This year I also went to the Amex preview. I agree-slim pickings. Very disappointing. Last year was better, but only marginally. If you need china, crystal, flatware then it is worth the trip. I may not go next year.

Avenue & Lawrence update.

On Saturday night we dined at Honey Beestro. We had the ribs. They were nothing special -the sauce was way too sweet. Around 9 P.M. Karaoke started. It was so loud we had to leave. It pretty well cleared the place out except for a table of young people that came in for the karaoke. While we were waiting for our bill two couples walked in, were seated, then immediately got up and walked out because of the noise. How foolish and no management around, just a couple of young girls waitressing. I won't be back.

Hot peppers at Terroni

I just got back from Lady York. I had a hard time finding them. One of the staff didn't have a clue what I was talking about. I found them in the produce department, on a shelf above the lettuce. I got the last small jar and there were two large jars left. Finally! I have been looking for these ages.
$8 AND $11.

Y & S Licorice Pipes

I stand corrected. I purchased a box of pipes quite awhile ago from Costco. The ones I saw recently must have been the cigars, not pipes. Sorry for the misinformation. I was at Costco a few days ago and couldn't even find the cigars.

Y & S Licorice Pipes

I saw boxes of Y & S Licorice Pipes at Costco-Billy Bishop Way-Wilson/Dufferin just last week. I looove them! The price is $6.99 I think.

Lunch around St. Clair/ Avenue Road area?!

The restaurant at 561 Avenue Road changed hands about a year ago. According to a friend that lives upstairs, it is not as good as it was before. It is an Italian restaurant.

Frozen Bread Rolls

I am closest to the Hogg's Hollow Loblaws and they didn't have any a few days ago. But I seem to remember seeing them there in the past. I will ask at the bakery counter. Thanks.

Frozen Bread Rolls

Does anyone know where I can buy a package of frozen bread rolls? You bake them yourself. I need them for a recipe for Friday night. I have been to Metro, Highland Farms and and Loblaws. No luck.

Steak Pit-Avenue Road

I agree the fillet is very acceptable. It is not a large steak but it does come with the works. I've had the fillet steak on several occasions and have never been disappointed.

Steak Pit-Avenue Road

Yes, the food is exactly the same. The ribs are great. I guess it was quiet due to the holidays. Our waitress was a bit strange. I love their blue cheese dressing. Which two do you mix? Remember the old days when they used to leave a silver serving tray with 3 dressings so you could dip your celery sticks and dress your own salad. In those days nobody worried about double dipping!

Steak Pit-Avenue Road

A friend from Peterborough was visiting this weekend. She used to live in North Toronto wanted to go to the Steak Pit last night for dinner.

I used to go there a lot but had not been for a few years. It was a Saturday night and the place was 90% empty. Some guy greeted us and I asked him if it had changed ownership. He said no, I have been here for 22 years. I don't recall ever seeing him. None of the regular waitresses were there and our waitress said she had been working there for many years. Again, I cannot recall ever seeing her before. In the past the same guy was there at lunch and dinnertime. The restaurant had been in his family for many years. He was not there last night. This is the first time tI can recall him not being there.

The food was very much the same but it felt errie in there. Neither of us want to go back because it just doesn't feel right. If that makes any sense. I wonder what is going on.

Best place to buy a Weber gas grill in the GTA?

Don't worry too much about after sale service. If you buy a Weber, you won't need any service. They NEVER die. Even the automatic starter on mine is working 15 years later. I have three friends with Weber's. They all rave about how wonderful they are.

You cannot compare it to a cheap barbeque. A Weber is in a league of it's own.It is an absolute pleasure to use. You won't regret it.

Panago

They make each and every pizza fresh. My medium pizza was ready in 10 minutes!

Panago

I live in the Avenue Road/Wilson area. Last week I received a flyer with a coupon for a free medium pizza from Panago at 1852 Avenue Road. The only restriction was it was good for up to $16.00 and expires December 31,2009.

When is the last time you got a coupon like this? Today I decided to pop in after the gym. I was greeted warmly by a lovely couple who I assume are the owners. I felt bad just getting a freebie so I ordered a ceaser salad and some rosemary bread sticks. He charged $4.09 for the entire order. I left briefly to move my car and when I came back he said I forgot to charge you for the rosemary breadsticks. I left my purse in the car and when I told him I would get the money he said pay me the next time. Have you ever? I insisted on paying him. I am not used to all this kindness!

I thoroughly enjoyed it. The pizza had lots of cheese on it which is hard to find sometimes. The salad was very fresh and a nice portion and the breadsticks irresistible.

ISO Maldon sea salt in GTA

I am hooked on Maldon Salt. The price varies. William Sonoma sells it for around $15.00. The last time I purchased it was at Highlands Farms-Dufferin/ Finch location. I think it was around $10. I use it for ''finishing" a dish because it is expensive and can go quickly if you use it in cooking a dish.
Costco has never carried it to my knowledge. I have purchased a couple of different salts in Costco and they did not compare to Maldon!

Bento Boxes & Accessories

I also read the NYT article. I pack a lunch 5 days a week for my after the gym work-out and I am getting so uninspired. The bento box article really captured my attention. The first place I turned to to find out where to find the bent supplies was Chowhound. Thanks.
