Oyster Bar at Harrahs - Beyond Great Hidden Gem

I have eaten some great fish on the New England, Florida, California, and Louisiana coasts. But, who would have thought I'd have the best in the middle of a smoky, mediocre casino like Harrahs in Vegas ?

First off, the Oyster Bar is not a typical "restaurant" - It is a bustling NYC style kitchen with bar stools facing the frenetic chefs who pump out remarkably tasty dishes. Great place to go by yourself if your friends won't leave the tables!

And, I swear, I have never had a better preparation than the Oyster Bar's Parmesan crusted Halibut with white lemon sauce. The fish was absolutely fresh, moist and flaky and cooked beyond perfection. It sat upon fresh spinach and thinly sliced potato rounds.

This all sounds typical but it was the sauce that took this entree to a grand level. I wish I knew beforehand to try and see them making it. They shared the ingredients "white wine, chicken broth, lemon, cream, garlic and shallots" - which together all sounds so typical. But the sauce was light as air and perfectly, beautifully white (which with lemon butter and chicken stock sounds impossible.)

If you go - do not pass up the oysters - all laying on a huge bed of ice behind the bar. Served on a half-shell fantastic - just the perfect "medium" size, ice cold. Served fried, light, and juicy.

5 Stars !

Stella?

Did you go? I hated it. Not the food but the atmosphere. No joy whatsoever. All diners sat there whispering because you felt like you were in church or a library and if you spoke up or laughed you would get in trouble.

Finalizing dining plans…how are these Olivier's, Evangeline, Pelican Club, Mr. B’s, GW Fins, Muriel's, Irene’s?

My two cents...GW Fins - overpriced and absolutely nothing special. Ditto for Mr. B's. Pelican Club is Ok. Emerils not so much - But his NOLA place in the Quarter is superb to me - but go during week - not weekend.

Irene's or Tomas Bistro

I like Louisiana Bistro on Dauphine...if you want a quiet romantic meal. They used to have one of my favorite entrees = filet mignon with crawfish butter sauce. outstanding.

Was rated #1 by trip advisor. Very quaint. Good wine. "Hidden Gem"

I lived there for three years until 2011 and have been to most all the better restaurants in town (casual and formal). I would definitely cancel in due course. I am not an inconsiderate idiot.

I have my favorites - but I tend to be more menu-driven - based on what we are craving for at the time.

And, there is NO day better for a menu-driven diner than Thanksgiving.

FQ Balcony for food and drinks

The French Market Restaurant on Decatur has a balcony. Good drinks and the absolute best fried shrimp with dipping sauce. Only place we love for fried oysters and shrimp. Big and fresh. All their shrimp is good. and yummy "cajun" potatoes (you can substitute for fries)

turkey day in NOLA - where to do

Hi...My husband and I are doing he same thing. Meeting son and his girlfriend in NOLA. First time ever we have skipped the traditional "at home" meal. We rented an apt in the Quarter with a kitchen..and could cook....but I am just dying to try t'giving dinner in one of the great restaurants.

The problem is....no one has their menu prepared yet. And, Many many of the better restaurants are already booked on Open table.com Guess you just have to pick a place and then hope you like the menu. I know you can't make multiple reservations on opentable...unless you sign up with completely different email addresses.

Kinda thinking about La Provence (over the Lake) - Besh's restaurant...or Houma's House - set on a plantation. they both had thanksgiving dinners. But, have my heart set on lots of seafood w/ turkey ...like oyster stuffing or seafood appetizers.

there is a local food reviewer that has a site and listed those that had stuff last year.
http://www.nomenu.com/joomla1/index.p...

I would probably not pick Red Fish Grill...but their menu (scroll down on right side) sounds very good to me

HMMM...think I will just set up 10 email adresses and book as many as I can until I see the menus

So, which did you like best? My husband and I are doing the same thing as the poster and I was leaning toward La Provence.

Whoa...Bayonna needs Restaurant Impossible help

Have eaten in the FQ many many times. I never picked Bayonna because sweetbreads and rabbit not my cup of tea.

But, back for the Final Four, and the gorgeous aura of the courtyard hidden away in the FQ and the huge ratings and Susan Spicer aura finally drew me in.

Holy Cow....what a total disappointment. So bad the ambiance couldn't even make a dent.

The hostess told us we had to wait. No biggie. She said, "Sit in the lounge and order a drink." No one in the lounge. After 10, went back to the hostess and ordered drinks. Pet peeve: Instead of placing our order, right in front of us, she stopped and chatted up a coworker who was there to meet friends. Drinks never showed up until we were finally seated at our table.

It became obvious that Bayona staff only caters to locals. We weren't even sure who are waiter was. Several came by - but no one seemed to "own us." We ordered at 7:45p and our entrees were finally brought after two requests at 9:30p. Mine, the hangar steak, was cold and tough as leather.. My husband's fish was fresh but totally uninspired. Funny part, Harry Shearer, reference SNL and Simpson voice overs sat next to us. He was totally absorbed with twitter but he had waited longer than we did and a waiter came up to him and asked him what he wanted for dessert ! No entree...skip to dessert.

They did take my ice cold late entree off the bill. so what....we weren't there to save money...we were there to eat what every one said was a fabulous meal. Never again would I go back to this very cool oasis in the FQ. We, as diners, were disrespected and were served horrible food.

BTW...their famous garlic soup was amazing with depth of flavor - despite being burned ever so slighly. Only "slightly burnt" bright side of visit.

What are your best swordfish steak recipes?

Me too. Lemon and butter s & P and that's it. I usually do foil pack. But, often gets very very watery. Maybe I should omit the salt.

Have you been to Hollygrove Market ?

It's on Olive near Earhart and So Carolltton?

They actually were supposed to open a new grocery there at that intersection in a big old building. Wonder if that ever got off the ground?

Where to take Red Lobster foodies ???

Yes, all one's I have thought of. Muriel's might be good because you could maybe stroll around Jax Sq before and step into the Cathedral.

I am probably the only one...but have never been too impressed with Mr B's. But, like the idea of a more "old school" place where the wait staff treats you special.

thanks !

Where to take Red Lobster foodies ???

Since I have lived in NOLA, I was asked to make dinner reservations for 8 people who have probably never been anywhere nicer than Red Lobster.

Nice people, all seniors, who live in a small Texas town and have never been to New Orleans but are going to the Women's NCAA Tourney next month. When I asked them if they had made dinner reservations the thought hadn't even entered their mind.

So, before I really analyzed anything, I immediately think, some kind of quintessential old New Orleans place and booked a table for 8 at Arnauds. One of the ladies called me after looking at their website and said that they read that men had to wear a jacket.and the men going do not like that idea one bit.

So, guess I am looking for:
1. Somewhere that the level of frenzy of Saturday night in Nola is at a minimum.
2. Red Lobster kicked up a couple notches
3. French Qtr, CBD, or no farther than say half way through Uptown
4. Casual but not too junky. Nice sit-down.
5. No entrees over $29 ($30 could be sticker shock).
6. Some kind of New Orleans experience that they could maybe rave about to their friends at home.

they have some -- in Metarie....but not near as much as Whole Foods. Very good vegetables, fish, steaks, bakery, deli, wine. Lots of prepared meals - geez, you can even get homemade gravy and gumbo and all kinds of good prepared meals and soups. I lived in Nola for three years, and I really never found one store that met all my needs. Dorignac's on Veterens isn't too bad either. I can work around not using WFs because the CEO is such an asshole to the workers.

It's that time of year again . . . back to New Orleans -- comments? suggestions?

Just looked at Bayona menu - you are right - only rabbit (which is considered game, right?). Maybe I will try it next month - only have heard good things. and, check out Patois,

Been to Nola many times too - got married in Jax Sq. I was lucky enough to work there and live in the Quarter for three years ending in 2011. It's so funny, I think the exact opposite than you . Would never consider staying anywhere near Canal. Way too much crime. My boss got hit over the head and had his briefcase stolen and a young couple who was just strolling along on Canal - the wife shot dead all on the same day. I am living proof that you can live, eat, party and shop for 3 years without ever setting foot on Bourbon St. Maybe someday you might try one of the quieter parts of the Quarter in the "neighborhood" sections - Lower Quarter. There is nothing like waking up early and walking for good coffee and fresh baked croissants. You see all the locals walking dogs and watering their beautiful balcony plants and flowers.

If you are ever super-flush with cash. We rented this with three other couples. It was spectacular - waking each morning and watching the riverboats

Nola Martini Fans??

thanks for input ! I have never heard of mixing different gins and vermouth together -- in one drink?? Duh, no, guess you mean drinking several.

Vermouth is quite an amazing liquid. How four drops vs. three drops can totally ruin a drink. With the very smooth, sipping vodkas out know, you barely need a drop.

Only problem - a group of us went to the Columns for drinks before taking a cab to Achafalaya for dinner. We all were completely and utterly smashed the drinks were so strong. That's another reason why I like Achafalaya - they took it all in stride....even gave us a private dining room.

Sunday brunch. Lovely setting in GD. Great, creative food. IMHO

Oh another GREAT place - for the ambiance and great bar. The Columns Hotel on St Charles - beautiful old mansion - where they filmed Pretty Baby with Brook Shields many moons ago. Playboy rated their bar the best in nola one year. Gorgeous old paneled wood and antiques. They used to have a jazz brunch on the big front porch

I am going there next month. Looking for new ideas too. Never been to Bayona - menu too game-heavy for my taste. Tell me about Patois. Have you been there before.

If you are in the Quarter - and looking for something different.. I have always liked the cozy and quiet Louisiana Bistro on Dauphine.
