15 bbq places in 7 days trip report and thanks for all the help!
It was around noon on Sunday. Maybe we were just impatient and ready to eat and any wait would have been too long :>)
I am sure it must be difficult to get every single batch of briskets the same -- just based on differing pieces of meat, how long it's on the fire, how much seasoning, etc.
Did you have the slaw? Like it?

linguine tastes more like a noodle than the other pastas to me. But, don't believe it has egg in it.

Tried J Mueller this past weekend. Pork ribs tender and juicy with excellent rub. Brisket tender and tasty but dry. Maybe timing is everything. (although they were taking them right off the grill) Could not enjoy the slaw at all - so heavily, needlessly over-seasoned...too spicy to enjoy - oddly flavored otherwise. Mushy potato salad. Takes a LONG time in line - and there were only 4 in front of us. Seems there was only one person who cut everything up. A mystery why there weren't several people doing this.

Thanks for the lead ! Sounds fab. For some reason, I don't love linguine...but maybe they could make that with spaghetti, like you mention.

Report back from ASTI
Well, we made it ASTI on Saturday night. Cool, lively vibe. We typically don't like tables that close together but here they were so close you literally felt like you were dining with other people. And, we met some fun ones and had a great time.
Of course ordered the mussels. They came in a chili flake tomato sauce. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how it could have been made...extraordinarily deep and rich, hot and spicy. Perhaps maybe fire roasted tomatoes, cooked for hours and hours with garlic, oil, and chili. Fantastic. Very small mussels, not that many, but the bread and sauce were to die for.
My husband ordered the rigatoni with panceta in tomato sauce. Pasta was homemade and once again the very Italian tasting tomato sauce was outstanding.
Unfortunately my entree was very unappetizing. A single, small, dried up overcooked piece of trout. They offered to cook another - but I declined because the light sauce had an indescribable funny tasting sauce. Same flavor on the spinach side. I have no idea what the sauce was made of..not lemony, not buttery, not olive oil based, not creamy, not wine based. No clue. Just funky tasting.
Think I would go back for sure - but would stick with the pasta.
Thanks for pointing us there. We had a fun time.

Sorry, messed up on the name...It's Olive and Junes.

Looks interesting and has good reviews. Saw swordfish and my mouth watered. Although I have had it right off the boat - so might be risky. No mussels
Think I am very close to make a reservation at Asti's as you recommend.
You are a doll for your help, thanks

Thanks. I will give it a second look. Hit "back" after I saw pizza pictures on home page. haha. I absolutely LOVE mussels. Last trip to New Orleans ordered them 4 times, searching for best. The best were at a restaurant called Herbsaint...curry and coconut broth. I actually picked up the plate and drank the juice when no one was looking.
Have you been to Olive and Janes? It looks interesting. We are staying at Mansion at Judges Hill. Don't think we want to do the 6th St area this time (except that Pesce looks good)...but Hyde Park or any other cool old neighborhood area sounds great

wine, low-key-no-glitz, neighborhood gem. Italian seafood even better
any ideas?
Maybe too much to dream for?
Sum it up....Italian-oriented ala Napa
Digging for clams near Old Lyme?
thanks. don't understand why there is such little information on the web. I did notice this cottage for rent in Giant's Neck. Said they got the clams from Pattagansett River

There are also rumblings about the Niantic River - no details.
Maybe we will visit a local bait shop when we get to Old Lyme

does anyone know the recipe for Bourbon Milk Punch? ala Napoleon House (not Bourbon House)?
It is divine and the only thing I remember the bartender there said was the secret was to use Mexican vanilla.

Any Carbonated Water Experts out there
thanks for the tip on Mayim Chayim....I'll look for it.

LOL....grendade. I've seen it and will give it a shot...thanx

Well, since my grandparents were Russian and Polish....I have always been very snooty and chauvinistic A bartender tipped me off to it.. Said it was great and cheap. I was totally skeptical, but then I read the reviews by Wall St Journal and CNN (who knew they cared). It beat out all of the great vodkas. With one caveat.. "it is so smooth, it is meant for sipping."
I think I just got hooked after my first drink..it is pure and mild...but packs the same wallop. But, if you like vodka with a strong bite (like Grey Goose) this is not it. But the taste, IMHO, is superb. And I am kind of into a buy local attitude. Of course, the price....$27 for a half gallon doesn't hurt.
Same with olive oil....I have switched to California olive oil. Mainly because I read that the real value in olive oil is it's freshness and Italian oil takes too long to get here and that most borders on being rancid. who knew!
Any Carbonated Water Experts out there
thanks JM, I will look for that. bet you are right...I have read that the naturally carbonated waters are not very fizzy.

thanks Windy and Paprkutr ! Think I will look into one of those....But I do like the thought of the high mineral content naturally carbonated sparkling waters.

Thanks. Unfortunately, I don't live within their delivery area. Wish I did

We are passionate about our favorite drink...Tito's Vodka (handmade) and sparkling water.
And, the more carbonated and fizzy the water the better.
I have been searching to find a water with the ultimate level of carbonation.
Anyone know?
First NOLA trip in 10 years and I need help - pretty please :)
Had to shutter when I saw Mister B's Bistro. Felix's and Acme. Not good choices at all, IMHO. Emeril does still reign for fabulous tasting food - although Delmonico's the worst of the three. Order garlic crusted texas redfish with bacon butter sauce if you want to die and go to heaven. Best, casual oysters and shrimp - French Market Restaurant (green striped awnings on Decatur and St Phillip)

New Orleans for a Week in July
Good list ! You know, everyone raves about Stella!, my husband and I hated it -- not because of the food - good not great - but the atmosphere. It was SO stuffy - it was like a place you felt like you had to whisper. I guess we just like more comfortable, happy places.
During the week (not on weekends) I still love NOLA. The garlic crusted TX redfish with bacon butter sauce is to die for.

sorry, was "outside the box" about my warnings. I value warnings as much as recommendations. You disagreed with every single one of my least favorites. Maybe I'd listen if you hadn't batted 1000.

Oh, don't get me wrong...I love restaurants with quieter tones too. But, personally I find a difference between quiet and relaxed and quiet and stiff and uncomfortable. Just me. Maybe I should try it again - but guess there are too many choices to do so.
Review of Recent Foodie NO tour
Please, don't anyone reading, go to stella! UNLESS you want to eat in a library atmosphere. I don't even remember the food there because it was so stiff and cold and un-fun. You will understand when I say it is a "whisper" place.
