Any sidewalk grocers in Calgary?
ah I see, im thinking 1 st. SE. I'm not too sure how long the vendor has been there for, from what it seems like this was their first year though. As cancowboy pointed out from my previous post it is all from bc, from various growers, although many are from the same. I would recommend tallying up the cost of your goods first though as they are more known for their produce than their math skills...
Any sidewalk grocers in Calgary?
flower shop? during the summer every thursday there is a stand set up on stephen ave that carries fresh produce, right outside the glenbow museum front doors.
Calgary: sausage making
I remember being surprised by quite the stock of sausage making equipment when i visited the Bass Pro Shop in cross iron mills a while back. Quite the variety of grinders and other equipment as well for pretty good price.
Calgary,Palomino Smokehouse and Social Club?
Been there a couple times, and can say the same, pretty hit and miss. Had the brisket and pulled pork and it wasn't bad. Last time i went though i sat there for over 15 minutes before being offered a drink and a menu and then sat around for another 30 minutes before the waitress came and asked if i wanted another drink, never even tried to take an order. Needless to say i left and haven't been back in a while.
Western Canada's best bakeries lets make a list
Gunther's in Calgary, 17th ave and 42nd st SE. The buns, especially the caraway and salt stick or kifli are one of my favorites and their cakes and pastries are very good as well. I have actually seen bakers from other bakeries in Calgary purchasing things from Gunther's and then trying to pass them off as their own.
Mexican in Calgary
I noticed they took away the behemoth ramp going up the side of their patio. They took forever on the damn thing and now they take it away, not much demand for a patio right now anyway. Would be nice for them to just finish up inside. I know what you mean when you say frustrating though, lived a couple blocks away too and was excited to watch it go up, and then, nothing, yet.
Good Pate?? Calgary
Its in the front counter to the left when you have just come in the front doors of the market. Just ask them about the goose pate, or ask for libamaj if you feel up to it, pronounced Lee-ba-mai.
Good Pate?? Calgary
Being a little biased, I would have to say that I am a big fan of the pate sold at the hungarian deli at the crossroads market. They sell goose pate instead of the usual pork, or duck liver. And it is easily a favorite of mine. Personally their is no comparison between goose and pork liver, duck is not bad but I prefer goose. They sell smoked or non, and also coarse or fine, and maybe more I'm not too sure. Its not ridiculously priced and the people who work at the place are really nice. Doesn't hurt if you speak a little hungarian too.....
New Mex on 17th SW? (Cgy)
Juans on 8th ave downtown is pretty good. Really liked their margaritas.
Dim Sum in Calgary
Have been shopping at fortune foods since i was a little kid, always good frozen dim sum to take home. Steamed up fresh, who needs the restaurant?
Donuts (Calgary)
Hard to find a good bakery anywhere really, my dad is an SOB ( son of a baker) and is never too impressed with what he finds nowadays in calgary. Specific bakeries which you hunt down might have individual items, but hard to find a good overall bakery.
Steak in Calgary???
Sobeys does sell Sterling Silver beef, i have never been too impressed with sobeys selection however. I noticed during my last trip to co-op that they were also selling dry aged AAA behind the counter, which would be a good choice. The dry aged is harder to find than the wet aged which is what most stores carry. It was the downtown co-op, I'm not sure if it is available in all co-ops around Calgary.
calgary's best kept secrets
The spaetzel are called tojásos nokedli in Hungarian. You should try making chicken paprikash yourself sometime John, its really really easy to make and results are awesome. It's always been one of my favorites. I would recommend it to anyone to try it out, whether you can or cant cook.
Best Authentic Thai & Chinese in Calgary
With Silver Dragon its a matter of timing too. Sometimes you hit a rut and the food can be cold and old, or you get it fresh and its great. I would never recommend U & Me, although the food was "fresh" it seemed bland. Not to mention the health issues......
Western Canada's best bakeries lets make a list
Personally in Calgary I am a fan of the Amandine bakery and also Gunther's. Just about everything at either is good, and i have noticed that other bakers go to Gunther's to buy specific items for their own bakeries.
Banff recommendations?
I have read some of the threads already, I was just wondering as to some people's favourites. And it seems like some of the other threads i have read people are either unwilling to pay and are looking for food on the cheap, or they are looking for a banff springs type thing. Will look into those more though...
Donuts (Calgary)
At the same time I think it is interesting to note the attraction to TH by various immigrant groups to Canada as well. Whether its simply a case of going with the norm or a genuine affinity for the brand, I always notice large numbers of recent immigrants of all different ethnicities that seem to be attracted to TH. Regardless it is definitely a strange satisfaction that people seem to get from TH.
Banff recommendations?
I was looking for some suggestions on some restaurants in Banff. My girlfriend recently moved there and i get to come up every once and a while to visit her, so I am looking for some places to take her out to as she wont be dragging herself out there when I am gone. I don't mind paying for a good meal but at the same time i am looking for good food not some hyped up cliche. Any suggestions would be great as I am pretty clueless as to whats up there. Thanks
Fresh produce in Calgary?
Just an update to the stand outside on 8th ave, bought lots of great stuff today for 15 bucks, Lots of good looking fresh fruit and veg. And they should have fresh figs in from BC sometime soon, for those who are interested in them.
Fresh produce in Calgary?
If you are downtown at all on a thursday then check out the stand that sets up outside the Glenbow museum on 8th ave at 1 st. SE. They sell BC produce and everything I have bought there has left me happy. Not to forget the convenience of being able to buy good produce on my break, rather than having to travel down to one of the markets.
New Mex on 17th SW? (Cgy)
Must have taken alot of work inside though considering what the place looked like before inside when it was the consignment store. The tables outside look nice though, they definitely seem to be cramming the patio full.
New Mex on 17th SW? (Cgy)
Still very empty inside it looks like, but the patio is coming together nicely!
Where can I find the best donairs chicken or beef in AB?
I admit, I have never been too impressed with sammy's. Living right up 11th st I have been convinced a couple times to stop in after catching the smells coming out, however, the shawarma seemed to lack substance to me. No opinion on the donairs, I havent tried them. After having donairs in Turkey, the ground stuff here just didnt seem too apealing. The middle east definately spoiled me, 10 years in Saudi Arabia and the UAE have left me searching for something that comes close but so far, no luck.
Beltline in YYC - Looking Up!
Will definitely have to check the area out, I've generally tended to stay away as the walk from the SE direction can be a little bit intimidating on certain days, and didnt really seem worth the hassle. Now i'll have to peek around a little more.
Calgary - Must-try Places
Happy Valley in China town definitely gets my vote for BBQ, the set meal, which includes your choice of meat with veggies and rice, and the typical HK tea and HK style soup. The meal is fairly priced at just under $10 which leaves you pretty full. Although there is cheaper... ABC just down the block is also a great spot. I have been going there for a long time and will be writing up a full review sometime soon...
Manuel Latruwe in Calgary - What should I get?
Hmmm haven't ventured that way yet. I am a whore to Calgary transit so it is a little out of my way, but i will definitely have to try it out...
Manuel Latruwe in Calgary - What should I get?
Having never been before I was pretty excited to try the creme brulee, definately one of my favourites regardless of where it is, however, I was somewhat dissapointed by ML. The brulee was more on the runny side, and definately overpriced. While I cant judge the place on this one brulee alone, it was definitely enough to make me hesitate on returning. Personally I find Ladybug at the barracks better priced and the brulee is delicious! Also Amandine bakery gets my vote for their amazing pastries, especially the chocolate pretzels!
