Inexpensive French fare?

Thank you for the ideas. Went to Taix MANY years ago so the memory is fuzzy but i don't remember feeling like returning. But perhaps it's worth a repeat. Le Petit Cafe looks charming as well if I happen to be on the westside. I remember fondly Cafe Maurice as well that bit the dust years ago.

Inexpensive French fare?

We're still blue about the demise of Cafe du Village on Larchmont where you could bring in your own wine. Can anyone recommend a low key French place? I never ate at fancy places when I lived there and miss the simple cafe fare. Any direction appreciated!

Pasadena Playhouse for dinner?

Thanks for the ideas. I'm just totally ignorant about the area! Looks like some good choices.

Pasadena Playhouse for dinner?

Dad's coming to town and we're catching some jazz at Pasadena Playhouse. Would really appreciate any suggestions on a good meal, somewhat snazzy environment walking distance to the Playhouse.
Thanks in advance.

Inexpensive in Mid-City/Miracle Mile

I recommend Larchmont. There's a few options like Cafe du Village,Bottega and Girasole. They are all byo, no corking fee.

Dinner at Jar

Funny - we go there mostly just for the sides and cocktails at the bar. I"m a vegetarian but we're happy w/the blue cheese iceberg salad, creamed spinach, roasted asparagus, fries... yum. Only side I was disappointed in was a hummus type deal.

Babka bound in West Hollywood

I'm ashamed to admit I've never gone to any of the Russian bakeries in my neighborhood and am looking for a very good chocolate babka to bring to a real live Russian's home.
Any direction on this venture appreciated!

ISO Mashed Potato Tacos in the Torrance Area

El Tarasco has several locations around the South Bay and carry potato tacos. I wish I could find crispy, potato tacos in the Hollywood area where I live though.

Recs in NoHo, Studio City environs???

Please any advisement on a moderate place with an enjoyable atmosphere? It's a friend's birthday- just 2 or 3 of us and are open to types of cuisine (Italian, Indian, Mexican- it's all good) but we're on a budget. We are clueless so any help would be so appreciated.
thanks in advance..

Root Beer

I'm a root beer freak too so I'll be checking out some of these places. Recently I had a hankering for sasparilla. I can't even remember what it tasted like exactly- had it in a ghost town in Nevada I think. I wonder if it's to be had anywhere around here.

Getty juice

fyi- you can bring your own picnic up there and eat outside. It's lovely. They even store your basket or cooler in the coat check for free.

Fun weird restaurants in LA?

I am crestfallen that Lowenbrau Keller is no more! I just posted a Scottish restaurant rec- Tam O'Shanter. That's pretty old school weird w/the stuff all over the walls. I also can think of Damon's in the Glendale area. old tiki vibe steakhouse. But nothing compares to the Keller!

Vegetable Soup

Newsroom Cafe and Literati both in Santa Monica. There's Urth in WeHo but I think there's one on the westside too now.

Scottish restaurants in LA?

Tam O'Shanter in Los Feliz. Lots of atmosphere, I believe it was Walt Disney's favorite spot. It's run by Lawry's now but it didn't feel corporate at all. I don't eat meat but my boyfriend really enjoyed it and I loved the vibe.

What happened to Doughboys?

I have had similar nasty experiences there too. In my life I've deemed food inedible and had to send it back maybe 3 times- 2 of those have been at Dough Boys! The first were the buckwheat blueberry pancakes that were pure mush. Recently i ordered a tomato soup that was unbelievably sweet. I simply couldn't eat it. There's always so many people there and the menu descriptions sound great so we went back for one final try - had a completely flavorless vegetable soup and we called it a day. Also- the place has zero atmosphere. The air is stale and it just feels dirty in there. I agree- I was passing by recently and couldn't believe they still have that same old graffiti there. As far as the staff goes, we didn't have rude service but the place does not appear to be run smoothly at all. Even though it's right around the corner we won't be going back.

LA - BEST MEXICAN RESTAURNT FOR BIRTHDAY PARTY - 13 People

For atmosphere and tasty drinks I have to add Lucy's El Adobe to the list. It's across from Paramount studios. The food's just average but you can't beat the fountains and lights on the patio. Also El Coyote is a fun, cheap place w/lots of party atmosphere. True the food is perhaps tex mex, cafeteria-ish but you won't notice after a scratch margarita- strong and cheap!

Creme Brulee in Hollywood?

Doughboys is down the street from me so i'll give them a shot- thanks. Last time we went they were still "working out the kinks" as they'd newly opened so hopefully it's smoother now...

Le 14 juillet.. Bastille Day! (where do i eat?)

Not in your neck of the woods but I love Cafe du Village in Larchmont Village by Hollywood. Very casual w/nice patio outback- bring your own wine as they don't have any but that's a plus as there's no corkage fee. Cafe Stella in Silverlake is very good but pricey and tough to get a table (also much further away for you)
