Lunch in Santa Rosa

Looking for good places in or near Santa Rosa for lunch or brunch. Have enjoyed Backyard in Forestville and Cafe Lucia in Healdsburg but need some ideas for places closer to SR. Outdoor seating and "farm to table" places a plus! Thanks!

Any Baklava Makers Out there?

I like to use almonds but have also mixed other nuts in when that is what is on hand. I have found that a mixture of simple syrup plus honey works well....less sticky and not quite a tooth-jarring sweet. I do like to add a bit of orange flower water to the syrup for a nice aroma and a bit of background flavor.

Thanksgiving 2013

Used canned (Geisha?)years ago but now use fresh Satsumas. The canned do have a bit of a "tinny" taste....

Thanksgiving 2013

How wonderful to be planning a special Thanksgiving for family and loved ones! A suggestion that is a must for our family...a fresh citrus fruit salad....not dressing or anything, just fresh pineapple, oranges, mandarins, mango, kiwi, grapefruit and a few pomegranate seeds tossed on top. Don't add bananas as there is always fruit salad left over and bananas would just turn brown. Have added slices of star fruit when I can find it....just makes it look more festive in my big clear glass bowl. It is nice to have the light and refreshing fruit to balance out all the richness....we also have this salad at Easter with the big ham dinner:-)

Spiced Crab Apples

They really are yummy! Bring back memories of childhood Thanksgivings when Grandma always made sure they were part of the relish tray.
I did find some fresh mini apples at Boa Vista in Apple Hill (Placer County).....don't usually see them there but they had a few so now I will pull out my recipe and start them pickling.
Thank you for the suggestions....may have to search again next year!

Fresh Parsley Root?

The soup we had in Denmark was much like a celery root creamy soup....white/lite cream in color with subtle seasoning. Similar to a Cream of Horseradish soup we enjoyed in Ely, England and have adopted for our Christmas dinner but without the horseradish "kick".
Thanks for the suggestions on places I might get parsley root!

Spiced Crab Apples

Am looking for some really tasty crab apples as a side for Thanksgiving. They seem to have vanished from the stores! I have made my own in the past, but have not been able to find the proper small apples this year. Any leads would be appreciated! Thank you!

Fresh Parsley Root?

Had a delicious soup in Denmark made with parsley root and saw it fresh in the market but have never seen/heard of it here. Any leads? The soup was wonderful!!!!

What food do you long for but can't find/recreate?

The poppy seed coffee cake from Wirth's bakery in San Francisco.....lots of yummy poppy seed filling in a flakey crust....have looked and looked for something like it but no luck!

Sadly, I'll probably never eat it again...

Sadly, the wonderful poppyseed coffee cake from Wirth's Bakery in San Francisco....
Wirth's was a stop whenever we were in THE CITY starting when I was a wee thing in the 50s. When the bakery was sold, the recipe was part of the deal and we were able to buy the coffee cake well into my fifth decade. Now, alas, the bakery is no longer and I have not been able to find a cake as good (and I have looked from the Pacific to Wisconsin).

Cooking from the Time-Life "Foods of the World" series of books, anybody?

The British one is good and makes for a nice travel log. I love the cranberry/walnut tart in the New England cookbook. Actually I have them all and while I don't use too many recipes I have enjoyed the photos and cultural information they provide!

World class Sausage in Sacramento

Morant's is also the very best place to get good old-fashioned hams...the bone-in, rind on kind that have no additives! Order ahead....especially during the holidays! Yum, yum!!!!

Best sliced sourdough sandwich bread available in Sacramento?

Have been enjoying the Boudin bread though it is a drive just to stock up. Will check the local Grocery Outlet for Truckee Sourdough. Haven't found the La Brea yet....any idea who carries it? Thanks for the help!!!!

Christmas Eve dinner or Christmas Day dinner - which is bigger in your house?

We love to celebrate so have at least three special meals!
Christmas Eve we go meatless so usually have something based on shrimp and always flaming cheese (saganaki) with champagne, Caesar salad and Christmas cookies.
Between opening stockings and gifts under the tree we enjoy sausages, stollen, mimosas, and coffee spiked with Baily's on Christmas morning.
The fanciest meal is Christmas dinner when we revert to our English roots (including popping crackers and wearing tiaras) and have the full roast beef, Yorkshire pudding spread including a wonderful Horseradish Creamed Soup we discovered when visiting Ely Cathedral.
Can't wait....my mouth is already watering!

Best sliced sourdough sandwich bread available in Sacramento?

Have relied on Colombo sourdough for my morning toast but, alas, the bakery has closed and I am trying to find a suitable substitute. I also used Colombo to make salad croutons. Nothing I have tried so far seems to have the right texture and does not toast up properly. Any suggestions? I originally am from the Bay Area and was raised with really yummy sourdough....

Cooking from the Time-Life "Foods of the World" series of books, anybody?

My favorite cookbook series....not only have I used the recipes but I have used the cultural information when teaching....and always reread the relevant books before traveling! Visited bakeries in Vienna and Budapest that I had dreamed of since reading about them in FOTW when I was young!

Tea in Victoria

When my daughter was small we had tea near the Empress in what I recall was a flower conservatory with an exhibit of small reptiles. It was a big hit with a little kid! Does anyone know where this might have been and if it is still in operation? Thank you!
