Porterhouse Steaks in Vancouver

In fact the Porterhouse is the best of the T Bone steaks. It is a t shaped bone with Filet├ętenderloin on one side and Striploin, or New York striploin on the other side. No Rib steak involved.

Porterhouse Steaks in Vancouver

Superstore, Safeway, Cioffis, Armando, yes, you can get a good steak at any of these places, and you can also buy a just okay steak. AAA is excellent quality beef, and PRIME is even better. Armandos has Prime, but it will cost you a premium.

The trick is to be able to pick out a good quality piece of beef from the counter. If you can recognise the characteristics of a good steak you will have a good chance of picking out tasty beef, or avoid a lesser quality.

Myself, I work at Gotham, so I sell Canada Prime Grain fed beef. It is serious tasty beef. Peoples eyes glaze over from the quality.

Today I cooked at home. The 5 NY striploins I picked out at the Superstore were excellent. I found a pack with ample fat marbling, and cut thick. I also noticed some not so great cuts. You just have to be able to pick out the right one...

DISNEYLAND AREA OR NOT TOO TOO FAR AWAY

Off to Disneyland for 5 days but other reason to travel is always to eat some real food authentic to the area. Thinking about renting a car. Looking for fun, unique establishments. Like the idea of Roscoes, something mexican, burger joints, diners, anything good...

Thank you for your recs. Will the traffic annoy me if I am looking for a evening drive to these spots?

Best Burger In Vancouver

For fear of public humiliation, the DBL cheeseburger at Mc Donalds is excellent. The quality can vary, but mustard, ketchup, pickles, onions, cheese, meat and a bun all can make a great boiger.

Google and You tube Mc Gang Bang for another great or maybe just interesting burger from the USA.

Decent pizza in Vancouver

Just had lunch at Ragazzi. I am also a fan of Fatihs. Here is my take.

Uncle Fatihs is one of the bestof the cheap slice pizza joints around. Sure, they probably use cheaper ingrediants, but the finished product is pretty good, and I like the crew that runs the joint. Not a big fan of Megabite. On par with many cheapo pizza slices.

4 Brothers staff treated my children like shit so boy cott them.

Ragazzi pizza is two steps better. They are trying to do something better and they succeed. The ingrediants taste better. They must use better ingrediants as I could taste the cheese, and other ingrediants individually and together in unison. The crust was good, but maybe a bit tough. Sometimes with pizza, less is more.

I am always amazed how some pizza joints put alot of stuff on a pizza and it still is tasteless. Too much cheap ingrediants.

Chef Michael Smith in Vancouver Nov 2/2009

I enjoy his cooking programs. He shows a real passion for food, and encourages people to cook at home, and to be adventurous. He also has a great philosophy toward food, and its place in the family.

His new cooking/travel show is also a favorite. I saw the Italy show, and it was quite good.

I can see some not liking him. He could be percieved as contrived.

Commercial Drive, Vancouver -- top ten places to Chow?

Bandidas is serving well prepared vegetarian or vegan food using healthy cooking, and unusual ingrediants to please even this carnivore. I had a meal there recently, for the first time, and was pleasently suprised at the great food, and the chill enviroment.

They are car free business, using a bike/trailer to cruise the drive for product. This is a GREEN business.

For many years I went by the Aristocrat each morning on the bus. I always looked to see if the couple was at the table by the window. And they always were there. They were serious regulars.

Your top splurges in Vancouver?

I had the pleasure of serving him along with some other local heavyweights. He was such a nice man, but It was a little intimidating serving him. You want to be so on your game with him as he is so great at his own craft. I have not served too many people who made me so anxious for all around me to shine.

NYC foodies - must eats in SF

As mentioned in my previous mention on the board of Alembic at 1725 Haight, amazing food, casual, and reasonable, and serving until 1:00am.

ALEMBIC

They have a large selection of booze, it always blows me away. Most of the product does not make it to Canada. So many American Ryes. I noticed an attempt at a good cocktail program, but was more impressed with the drinks at Aub zam zam, and some jazz bar nearby whose name escapes me.

It was the food that BLEW us away.

Kitchen firing on all cylinders...

Read about this restaurant in a local Vancouver magazine as a place to dine in. They were right. Service started a little rough, but when they woke up they were able to compliment a great kitchen.

The place is casual, and reasonably priced. Located at 1725 Haight, they are open late, til 1:00am.

A group of eight including 3 chefs had just about everything on the small plate share menu. The Bone marrow with a garlic confit was amazing. The Pork belly sliders/ Pork ribs/ scallops etc. were all well prepared and very tasty.

The chefs all agreed that this was some of the best food enjoyed in years. I was suprised that they are not mentioned on chowhound yet.

Go and check it out and then go and have a drink at Aub zam zam after.

Thanks to all who gave us some great reccomendations for our trip. SF Rocks.

Visitor wants a special place to have a drink

Thanks to all for the great places to eat on our visit, but now I am looking for a place to have a drink.

I'm looking for a great scene, place, ambiance to have a couple drinks. Real San Francisco, local hangouts. Not necessarily posh, just genuine. A hole in the wall will work. Maybe full of some interesting people. Hey maybe some serious bar flys too.

We will be at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival at Golden gate park, so close to there would also work, but we can cruise to find that special place. Hey maybe we can meet you for a drink...

Thanks. Looking forward to coming back to your great city.

Help, Famous hole in wall seafood joint at Fisherman wharf

Long ago someone told me about a hole in wall seafood joint in the Fisherman wharf area where local San Fran people frequent. I am coming to San Fran, and it sounded good to me.

Thanks for any help here.

Any other suggestions on classic, real, genuine San Fran places with great food, and tons of charm?

Cheap rice cookers in Vancouver

Our rice cooker is a one button Hitachi that is so simple to use and it makes good rice. It is so old, yet it works. If all you want to do is make rice keep it simple. If you want more get the ones with all of the bells and whistles, and when it breaks get another one. The high tech ones will surely break. Sad but true.

KISS

Cheap breakfast special in Vancouver.

We used to go to Bons alot, butt grew tired of the cheap quality. We went back recently, and enjoyed the scene, and the breaky was good for $2.95. I find that if I get my own refils of coffee it takes care of any service issues, and the staff smile at you. A bit like cosmos in MTL.

It is just not the place we can go to too often.
