I love Tim Hortons because...

I get where you're coming from. on the Roadfood sight a few years ago I mentioned buying Sushi at Wal Mart. Nobody was actually personally insulting, but I got a lot of "what the hell are you doing." I got the same thing when I mentioned ordering a steak at a coney island.

Question About Still

On the Series M*A*S*H the tent where Hawkeye, Trapper, Frank, BJ, and Winchester lived had a still. My question is what kind of alcohol did that still produce? My guess it was some sort of gin, but I can't say for sure. Maybe it was a form of grain alchohol.

Las Night's Hannibal

Hannibal has been renewed for a third season. Has anyone been watching the last few weeks with Mason Verger. Last week he did to himself what was referred to in the Movie Hannibal, ("I'm full of myself.')

There seems to less food scenes this season, but the one with the fish comes to mind.

It's interesting that Kids in The Hall member Scott Thompson is playing a lab tech. About 19 years ago he made a movie called Brain Candy.

My First Durian

After years of curiousityI Finally tried a durian. The was a Chinese grocery next to the Thai Restaurant I went to in Madison Heights MI, and I picked one up more less on a whim. After trying to imagine to smell and taste for years, I now know. The description of a onion like custard was more or less correct. It's smell was strong, but I've smelled worse.

Water Joe

Has anyone tried Water Joe, bottled water with caffeine? It tried it this week. It has kind of a funky, slightly bitter taste.

The wine went over well. Nobody ate the Baklava.

Thanksgiving Meal Other Than Turkey

Is anyone out there eating something other than Turkey for Thanksgiving? This years for the second years in a row we are having brisket. I'm not sure what else is going to be there besides the usual chopped liver appetizer. I'm bringing a bottle of Mad Housewife wine and Baklava. It should be interesting and intimate, (5 people are going to be there.)

Wendy's (No Coke)

Everything else was fine. The Baconator was good and I still have a little bit of the Sprite I ordered instead.

Wendy's (No Coke)

This afternoon I went to a local Wendy's drive through to pick up lunch.
When I order a combo meal I found out they were out of Coke. To me this was strange and the possible sign of a badly run operation. My mom years ago told me of a Chinese restaurant that ran out of rice. Maybe this is something akin to this.

Surviving Whole Foods

I was there yesterday picking up snacks for the woman who was cleaning my apartment. She only ate raw foods so 7 11 was out of the question, (she did a great job.) It's easy to get through than Trader Joes and has more selection.

When cronuts kill...

Actress Emma Roberts was on Jimmy Fallon talking about waiting in line for a Cronut and not be able to get one.
Jimmy heard earlier about the story and gave one to her, (And one to take home to her mother.)

Weird 70's PSA

I tried to look for the PSA on Youtube but struck out. It might of been a meatloaf but it's been over 30 years since I've seen it. I'm pretty sure it's what you remember.

Weird 70's PSA

Does anyone remember this odd Public Service Announcement ? It features Sam And Ella, two cartoon microbes representing the Salmonella bacteria. They are running around a kitchen reminding people how dangerous they are. Meanwhile, the words Sam & Ella are chiming to the strains of Wagner's Ride Of The Valkeries, (think Apocalypse Now.) It was a very strange TV memory from my childhood.

Does anyone every buy those five dollars Little Caesars Pizza's? I do but I add a twist. I put a jar of anchovies on it. Does anyone out there do something similar? (when I do I seem to need a lot of water.)

Try the Library in Houghton or Vangos in Marquette.
Jean Kays in Marquette is also good. I was in the UP last month but did eat any pastys, (not the biggest fan.)

Best Fudge Store On Mackinaw Island

I remember as a kid at camp the once a term trip to Mackinac Island. Kids were buying a bunch of fudge plus six packs of Cokes from Douds. I guess here comes a joke about childhood obesity or funky smell cabins. I saw that Douds was still there but I didn't have a reason to go in. I didn't eat that day till I got to Alpena.

Best Fudge Store On Mackinaw Island

About a week ago I was on Mackinac Island. Right before I left on the ferry back to St Ignace I bought a small amount of Peanut Butter Fudge from Mays, mostly because it was close to the dock, (actually they all kind are since the shopping area is not that big.) This leads me this question, which is the best fudge store on the Island: Murdick's Joann's, Mays, Ryba's, Murray's, or Kilwinn's? Since I only went to May's I can't really compare.

Saginaw & Alpena

My trip is almost over. I'm at the hotel computer in Saginaw right now. I made it to two places recomended by Chowhound, Williams Cheese Shop and the Turkey Roost. I had a take out hot turkey sandwhich at the Turkey Roost, (really good, alot like the type I had when I was a kid.) As it was father's day the place was packed. At Wiliams I bought about 40$ worth of cheese for my mom and her friend, (it's in the motel fridge right now.)

I also stopped a Brown's Fisheries in Paradise which was recomended by someone on Roadfood. Tommorrow I go back to Pontiac.

Saginaw & Alpena

In about two weeks I'm making a trip up north from Pontiac to Marquette, with stops in a few different towns and cities. The trip will end by going down US 23 from Cheboygan, to Alpena,to Saginaw, and then home. Does anyone out there has anywhere to recommend in Saginaw ,Alpena, or on US 23 in general? I put a similar request on Roadfood and someone mentioned The Turkey Roost near Linwood, (north of Saginaw.)

Cudighi (aka Yooper Sausage)

I remember they used to serve Cudighi in the Cafeteria when I went to NMU. I'm making a trip up there in a couple of weeks and I might try to find a place that serves it. It might be Vangos but first I want to get one of there Steak Sandwiches.

Las Night's Hannibal

Last night's Hannibal had very graphic food scene. Near the end of the episode Dr Lechter is shown preparing a very elaborate meal containing actually beautiful shots of various meats. I don't think I need to tell you where this meat came from. It ends with Hannibal serving an elaborate meal to guests. Did anybody out there watch this? (I don't expect anybody from Utah to reply where the show has been pullled.)
I really don't know the definition of food pornography but that might be it.

Colets Violets

Has anyone out there heard of a candy called Colets Violets. There was a woman on NPR's Fresh Air who mentioned that confectionary, (among others things her Grandfather brought Pastrami to America.) She said it tasted like flowers, (it sounded like a New York thing and I'm from Michigan.)
