Crepes in the D? [Livonia, MI area]
I would suggest The Magic Pan but they went under 20 years ago. I did find out that there was a new one at the Mall Of America.
Downeast Maine - North of Ellsworth
While you're in the area do you know a good place in Calais?
Trip To Maine In July
I've set my itinerary. I'll be hitting five cities:
Bangor
Calais
Presque Isle
Augusta
Boston
I know I'll miss somethings, (or many things) But I can always go back when and if I get a car. I'm still looking for a same day bus trip from Bangor to Acadia National Park. For Boston info I'll look at that thread.
Moxie
I have a question about the drink Moxie. How available is it in the state of Maine? Does a person have to seek it out, or can it be found in every convience store, grocery and Wal Mart like Coke or Pepsi? I've heard about this drink for years, (I think from Road Food) and I want to try it.
Trip To Maine In July
My trip is two weeks in July. I going to try to go to Boston to see somebody I used to know, (a friend of my brothers.) I also booked two nights in Calais, which is the far end of the coast across from New Brunswick, (of course your from Maine so you know that.)
I figure other spots on the Atlantic would be too crowded. A company called West Bus goes their daily. I only plan to spend about two day in the far north.
If I had a car I would be their next week and hit some really odd places like Jackman.
Sometimes we have to make do with what we have. Also I went to college in Marquette Mi, so I like out of the way.
Trip To Maine In July
I did a Mapquest search. I found out that one of the three remaining Howard Johnsons restaurants is a half mile from the first hotel I booked. Laugh or sneer at me it you want but I grew up near an old Howard Johnsons, (10 Mile Evergreen Southfield MI.) My trip is booked for two weeks for eventually I'll get some local seafood
Trip To Maine In July
Basically I looked at a road map. I'm flying into Bangor. There is a bus line, (Cyr) that goes from Bangor To Presque Isle and Caribou. I'm looking up Bus and Ferry routes and tours before I travel. If it's not on a route I'm not going. I'm also going to try to make it to Boston and see somebody I used to know. I'm using a Greyhound Discoverpass so I could end up anywhere,
(well anywhere with a cheap motel.)
Trip To Maine In July
In July I plan a trip to the east coast. I plan to visit the cities of Bangor, Presque Isle, and maybe Augusta. This is a Bus/Plane, (maybe Ferry/Train) trip since I have no car, (maybe next year.) Can anyone out there recomend a good place to eat in those cities? Any kind of food is good, (but I like steak.)
any kosher hotels left in the Catskills?
I heard somewhere that one or more of those hotels became Buddist retreats.
Theoretical Question About A Bus Trip
This question is theorerical, but it's based on real events. About ten years ago I worked at the Greyhound Call Center in Omaha Nebraska, (it closed in 2003.) One night among the phone calls
a girl called from New York, (I think) saing she was Orthodox Jewish and planing to take a cross country bus trip. I'm not sure why she said that but it was the overnight shift I we got a lot of strange calls, (at the end the job was like trench warfare but I digress.)
I'm not sure if she mentioned how she was going to keep kosher on the trip. I allways wondered
if she made the trip how did she manage to do that, or how anyone who keeps kosher manages to do that. The places buses stop don't exactly cater to that population. Maybe she brought lots of snacks, (A New York to LA trip is 64 hours so it seems to be a challenge.)
new bakery in Chelsea, MI
I looked at her website. Under the "Story'" section she mispelled Ted Kopple as Ted Copple.
She might want to change that. (I misspell stuff on boards all the time but my posts on a board does not represent a business I run.)
On the other hand her pastries do look very good.
Trenary Toast [Trenary, Michigan]
Has anyone out there ever had Trenary Toast? It's made in a bakery in Trenary Michigan, a very small town about 30 miles south of Marquette in the Upper Peninsula. According to Wikipedia the bread is a varriation of an old Finnish recipie, (I can't recall the name.) I went to school at Northern Michigan about 20 years ago but I've never had this product.
Question About Old Howard Johnson's
I found a website called Hojoland, about the almost defunct chain Howard Johnson's, (three are left.) They have a list of former locations. One of them was in Farmington Hills, MI on Middlebelt.
my question is where on Middlebelt was it ?
There was one near my house in Southfield on Ten Mile and Northwestern. it's been a Kerby's Coney Island for more than 20 years. However I still have memories of it growing up. I had an early birthday party their.
Stegt Flaesk Med Persillesovs
In the latest Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue Danish Rookie model Nina Agdal is briefly profiled.
At the end of it it says her favorite dish is Stegt Flaesk Med Persillesovs. After googling it I found out that its a pork dish with bacon and parsely sauce. Has anybody out there had this dish or have heard about it. I have very little experience with Danish or Scandanavian food, (I been to IKEA once and did not stop at the cafe.)
Strange Food Scene In Movie
There is a book "Manifold Destiny" is about cooking with a car engine.
Strange Food Scene In Movie
Last Saturday I saw one of the oddest food scenes in a movie. In the 1986 film The Longshot Tim Conway is grilling steaks in the back of a station wagon. The car fills up with smoke and he and the three other passengers open the doors after almost being asphyxiated. Who has ever done this in the history of automobiles? The only expanation for this behavior is that it was raining. Actually the scene was sort of funny in an odd way, (as was the movie.)
When do we stop calling it "Greektown"? (DTW)
The only Greek Orthodox in the area I know about in the Detroit area is the one off of Woodward near Long Lake. I also know there's a Syrian Orthodox Chuch on Lasher near Ten Mile, close to Southfield High School, (Go Bluejays.)
When do we stop calling it "Greektown"? (DTW)
Was there ever a Greek community in that area, even years ago? I don't think Detroit ever had a really large Chinatown, (there might of been a small one near the Cass Corridor.)
New Seoul Garden in Southfield, MI? [DTW]
I grew up about a little more than a mile fron The New Seoul Garden. It was our Chinese place of choice after the decline of the Empress Garden in Harvard Row. It's been there a long time in a somewhat competive are, (RIP Tel Twelve Mall, Esquire Deli, etc.)
Coney Island Steak (DTW Specific)
Has anybody ever ordered a Steak from a Coney Island? I did it once from Bravo Coney Island,
Auburn and MLK, Pontiac MI.) It was on the low side of mediocre but I wanted a steak and I don't have a car, (maybe this spring.) I'd stick to the hot dogs and Gyros.
Since there are a lot of Coney's in the Detroit area maybe some of them can make an okay steak.
Valentine's Day Dinner in Detroit Metropolitan Area (DTW)
How about the Cafe Cortina in Farmington Hills.
Can anyone tell me where to find a knish in la crosse Wisconsin
I went on Mapquest and found one synagogue in Lacrosse, Congregation Sons Of Abraham. Maybe if you call them they could tell you where to find a Knish, (I don't want to print anyone's phone number on a message board.)
Twinkie In Trouble
I heard tonight on ABC World News that the Hostess Company, which I think is owned by Continental Bakery, is close to filling for bankruptcy, (probally chapter 7.) Somehow I don't think this is a sign of America's improving eating habits, (I'm Diabetic so I'm really not in a position to wave a finger.) I wonder how is Little Debby is doing?
Mexican Coca-Cola [moved from New Jersey board]
It's usually sold around Passover. Corn is levened, sugar is not.
Is chow the only good food site?
Roadfood is pretty good. It has a different focus than Chowhound.
