Any great food on Frenchmen Street?
Though it is not actually a restaurant, the bar cafe negril has a great taco stand open in the back most nights. The pineapple pork tacos are divine, and the rather awesome proprietor is there sometimes till after 1am... Great snack late night, and he has a few other options.
What would you eat at............
Dick and Jenny's: FRIED OYSTERS (if they got 'em)
Patois: Scallop and pork belly app and I am sure many other things but I haven't been there for ages.
Emeril's: Rabbit remoulade with fried green tom's, "smokey" (exotic mushrooms and tasso over angel hair), and the fried chicken and waffles at lunch.
Coquette: They have an asparagus salad right now that is amazing. I have also heard great things about their fried shrimp.
That's the extent of my experience. Enjoy!

Party of 20-25, near convention center or maybe french quarter, $60pp max?
Try Meson 923. They are new and the food is wonderful, and I know they have a private dining room than accommodates this number of people upstairs. They would probably be willing to work with you on the all-inclusive menu too.

Lunches to-go near convention ctr?
I can say with absolute assurance that unless you are an XXP, Emeril's does NOT do takeout.

Mother's is probably not really worth your time, especially since there is usually a line out the door. I am truly mystified by this line, as it truly is NOT all that. nomadchow is right on about Butcher. It's the BEST in the area for sandwiches. Stanley in the quarter is a cute little modern diner with quality sandwiches as well, but its counterpart Stella! is only open for dinner, and is at least a 3 hour committment, though worth every nano second. Cochon is good, but not great. For dinner, you would be much better off at Emeril's or Meson 923, a new spot that just opened on the corner of South Diamond and South Peters (very near conv center).

moving to New Orleans!
Nah but I think that it would make a pretty good mixer! It's very, very lightly sweetened carbonated water flavored with cane sugar and fruit juice. So refreshing and delicious. Especially the grapefruit.
Congratulations NOLA.....An Outstanding NOLA Restaurant Review From NY Times......
I could not agree more. The article reads like a Chowhound Top Ten List of places that tourists should go. The Vietnamese aspect of the article is kind of cool, but it's a little out of left field.
Great site! Was very helpful for our recent trip! Thanks
And really delicious! It's a Monteleone (revolving bar) specialty.
moving to New Orleans!
I go there often at lunchtime for their pressed sandwiches. The guys who work there are super nice, and they thoughtfully prepare their creations so that ratios are spot on. For some reason, I think of it as being a little on the expensive side. Maybe because I am always getting vegetarian sandwiches, and it seems like too much money to pay for what I am getting. But now that I think of it, $8 for a Reuben is certainly not outrageous. In any case, they also carry grown up soda, which I adore, and they make a pretty good cupcake as well. All in all it's definitely a friendly, quality neighborhood place.
Meritage?
When I was there they had some kind of corn and crab soup that was truly out of this world. That's the only thing that really stands out in my memory from that meal. I remember some rabbit we had as being just okay...wait, I just reviewed the menu. The lamb was also stellar. Side note: The service here was superb.
Meson 923
I recently had a meal at the new restaurant Meson 923 on South Peters and South Diamond Streets, and all I can say is outstanding. Truly original, fresh, and exceptionally delicious offerings there. Entrees are between 19 and 35, so I would say average for NO fine dining. Highlights were the pork belly with manila clams (most savory brown gravy ever), the fried oysters (served on grits from heaven), grilled quail, amazing skate... I could go on and on, and most likely will once I can eat there a couple more times. My prediction is that this place is going to be HUGE. Get in while you still can.
Chow in Metairie for Jazz Fest?
+2 on Ristorante Filippo. Very solid Italian with wonderful, sweet staff. Philip himself is usually there supervising, and they make fabulous martinis. Also, it is not to be discounted that the venerable New Orleans food critic B. Anderson dubbed them as having some of the best meatballs in the greater NO area. It's probably worth your time...

Where to eat late on a Thursday night
I had some chicken lettuce wraps there that were well liked by everyone at the table. Rather generic I know, but I would definitely go back. It's a really fun place. They also do a grilled cheese and tomato soup that was yummy. Only kind of questionable thing was the fried red beans and rice balls. It wasn't really broke, you know?

Neither of these places are actually in the quarter, but I have had some good eats at both recently:

http://www.thedelachaise.com/ (kitchen open till 12)
This place is in the quarter. I cannot speak from personal experience, but I have heard good things:

I always recommend Camellia Grill for late night snacks, but it's probably too far uptown for your consideration, on this night at least.

Emeril's is definitely a great choice. They love moms over there; mine can't stay out of the place! And I live for the Sundays that Emeril's does brunch, since I work uptown and can never go in for lunch during the week. Darian's Chicken and Waffles are fantastic!

Steak Frites?
+1 La Boca. It was the first place that came to mind when I read the title of the thread. Jazzy beat me to it. She is right on about the fries; they are some of the best that I have had.

Mike's on the Avenue Reopened
My parents and I went a few weeks ago. Other than a poorly manicured and rather rude hostess, the experience was a positive one, at least for me. Mother had some tuna sashimi that was amazingly fresh, and once she got her hands on some soy sauce, delicious. I had the fish (don't recall species) pate with onion jam and some amazing wisconsin cheddar. It was easily my favorite dish of the night. The salty fish against the tart sweet jam and the bold cheddar were so delicious with the crunchy sesame cracker. Also had a Dragon roll that was great. Dad had the scallops which were fresh and tasty, but in no way innovative. Mains were slightly disappointing. Garlic filet severely lacked garlic and was a bit overcooked, and the sides were just kind of blah. My lamb was tasty and well-cooked, but the portion was very small for the price. I would go back though, as there are other items on the menu I am interested to try. Side note, there were only two other tables when we went in, but it was on the later side of the dinner hour, close to 8:45. Our server was great.
Foods you can't keep in the house because you can't stop yourself eating them
SO with you on the pickled okra. I am totally addicted. Also pickled jalapenos and carrots that come in the jar together. Best sandwich companions ever.
Foods you can't keep in the house because you can't stop yourself eating them
I have always absolutely adored this flavor combo. Why is it so pleasurable to eat something incredibly crunchy and salty, and then take a long dram of a great pinot or cab? Also goldfish and red wine together. YUM. Dangerously perfect bad-TV-watching snack.
TRUE NOLA EXPERIENCE
Absolutely Dick and Jenny's! Best fried oysters in the world, and the cuisine is definitely more reflective of indigenous NOLA than Cochon.

Irene or Rio Mar
I dined at Irene's last night with my BF. We had a lovely time; service was impeccable and the atmosphere is very fun and really cozy. The apps were pretty good to good (he had the paneed oysters and shrimp, which I loved, and I had a creole tomato salad with blue cheese and bacon, and we shared some garlicky escargot served in mushrooms over croutons). He had the duck, which I thought was very tasty, but slightly overcooked. I had the lamb, which unfortunately, was cold and underdone. It could have been a lot better, but I would definitely be willing to give it another chance. Overall, I think that Irene's would be a more fun, NOLA-centric experience. Rio Mar is rarely to never crowded, though if you want Spanish food it is very good.

Meson?
Mom and I went to the second soft opening last night. I have to say that the food was incredibly good. I will write more once they are officially open (this Friday).
Dinner at Boucherie--What is your favorite dish?
I have been there three times, and I had the smoked scallops all three of those... The preparation was different the last time, really delicious. They were on top of a latke-type potato cake with some kind of fruit-foward sauce (maybe apple?...sorry it's been a while). They also have amazingly good french fries.
visiting from Boston
After perusing your blog, I am of the opinion that you would find Port Of Call to be overrated. Another one of those situations where they became famous, and then kind of stopped caring as much, maybe? Not sure, but they do not melt their cheese and there are no french fries in sight. Two downers for me. I agree Yo Mama's is a better burger, though there is still the lack of fries... Camellia Grill uptown I think does the best one in the city, but it's a diner griddle burger, and not a big monster like the previous two places. Just depends on what you're looking for. Camellia Grill is worth a visit just for the chili cheese omelets, the chocolate freezes, and the hot pecan pie, though.
