Best "Ethnic" Neighborhoods and International Markets in the US

Detroit area...Dearborn's Warren Avenue for Arabic

Tuna Fish in a Can

I add my voice to the Kirkland tuna fan club.

fiddleheads at trader joe's [moved from Washington DC & Baltimore board]

I blanch them, then dress them in a bacon and vinegar type dressing...like a spinach salad.

~ Are most meats at the supermarket already brined with salt? If so, how do can you tell? ~

but with kosher meat, you know (or at least are reasonably confident) that there aren't any mystery chemicals in the solution

Something like Kroger's "moist 'n' tender" pork, well, who knows what's in there? Maybe benign, but I'd rather flavor meat to my liking, not to Cargill's.

Any strawberries yet? (DTW)

That's good...since cherries and the rest of the tree fruit are NOT going to have a good year.

DTW - Taqueria Guadalajara - New in Waterford

ah, my neck of the woods (Timberland Office Park on Corporate). One very nice thing is that we are walking distance from the strip mall at Corporate/Crooks...no real foodie stuff (unless you like Sushi Do...I'm just OK with it) but in AH walking was not really an option.

But I do miss Rangoli. We tried Ashoka and it's OK but not as good.

Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 2nd quarter 2012

in our store they're above the frozen pizzas

DTW - Taqueria Guadalajara - New in Waterford

waaa! the downside of my office moving from AH to Troy last year is the loss of proximity to both Carnival Market and Rangoli (and the Bootleg party store with its awesome subs...and Busch's supermarket)

What is the one item you always leave Costco with?

advil....hee.

I still have a mega bottle I bought there 3 years ago...expired but people are still taking it!

what brand of smoked salmon spread are you buying?

Food Network Star

On TWOP they are commonly referred to as "Kermit and Medusa"

DTW - Taqueria Guadalajara - New in Waterford

I'm no expert in Thai food, but I like what I've had from them (not my first time getting food from them)

DTW - Taqueria Guadalajara - New in Waterford

I stumbled across this blog while looking for an online menu for Sala Thai in Troy
http://insearchofgoodthaifood.blogspot.com/

These guys have eaten at a lot of Detroit-area Thai places and concluded that Thai Taste is the best. (which is where I ended up at instead of Sala Thai!)

DTW - Taqueria Guadalajara - New in Waterford

Is this place any relation to the Thai Taste in Troy?

Why do you continue shopping at CostCo? I am underwhelmed. What do you appreciate about the warehouse store?

I agree with much of what sueatmo says. I have a basement and even though I think I could beat Costco's prices on paper towels/TP/dishwasher detergent if I shopped judiciously, I'm much happier buying it in bulk and not having to deal with it for a couple of months

Foodwise, the Kirkland tuna is the best canned tuna I can find at any price. They have Tillamook cheese ridiculously cheap compared to what it is at any other store. Big jar of Garden Fresh salsa at close to the same price the tiny tub is at other grocers. San Pelligrino lemon and orange soda at half the price.

I'm in metro Detroit and have never had a poor employee experience at Costco.

Food Network Star

there's a visual that will haunt many a nightmare.

Why is the Olive Garden so reviled?

I would tend to believe that based on my own experience of an unevenly heated entree...like it had been microwaved.

Does anyone actually like Sandra Lee?

two words: spackle face

the horror...

"He's baaaaaack." DTW

"have you ever seen kwame and lavan in the same room?"

Hee.

Maybe they can share a cell.

"He's baaaaaack." DTW

I think it's actually more interesting that the dude from "America's next great debacle, er, restaurant" is in on the deal...he got royally shafted by that show IMO, so I hope LaVan Hawkins isn't doing another shady here.

Jamawn, keep your job at Chrysler if you still have it.

Is American Kobe REAL Kobe??

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Lewis Black rant on The Daily Show the other night which included a bit about "kobe" beef...and the overuse/misuse of the word "artisanal"
http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/tue-may-1-2012/back-in-black---artisanal-foods

I freaking LOVE Lewis Black.

Bayless, Moulton and Izard all GO BLUE

Got my University of Michigan alum magazine in the mail...it's primarily about various food issues and includes interviews and some recipes from Rick Bayless, Stephanie Izard, and Sara Moulton. I knew Sara was a U-M alum but wasn't aware that the other two are...

The other articles are also pretty interesting

Chopped All-Stars Finale (5/6/2012) [SPOILERS]

Not that it really matters, she kind of makes up the prices IMO..."buy sirloin steak on sale for $2.99!" and she doesn't really account well for pantry ingredients.

Righty-O, Melissa...

Chopped All-Stars Finale (5/6/2012) [SPOILERS]

Yeah, I think we all recognize what the "edit monkeys" can accomplish to create a storyline--Penny = beeyotch--but they've got to have something to work with in the first place.

Never EVER want to see her again. Thoroughly unpleasant indeed.

What did your Mom always have on hand, that you NEVER do?

your four ingredients would make a great Chopped basket!

New BBQ place in Bridgeport - Dickeys

Tried the one in Troy MI a month ago and was very underwhelmed. Flavor is OK, and my dining companion got the hand chopped brisket which she said was mushy. Sides were also just OK

If I were in the area, I might stop for lunch but I will not go out of my way for it.

Oscoda Michigan area eats?

+1 for both Tait's and Wiltse's. We ate at Tait's this past New Year's Eve and were pretty happy. Salad actually made from non-iceberg greens...big plus up north. Wiltse's has some good house brewed beers, decent bar-type food.

We like Mama's Place for breakfast...linoleum floors, fake wood, waitress calls you "hon" kind of place. Not gourmet but good for the basics.

If you're there in the summer, the Oscoda Farmer's Market is on Wednesdays and is totally worth a visit.

Foodie Detroit! need your recs...

If your stay includes a Saturday, I recommend Eastern Market and area. Russell St Deli or Farmers Restaurant for breakfast (1 order of corned beef hash @ Farmers is enough for two people, and definitely is NOT from a can!), Supino's for lunch or Bert's for chicken and ribs grilled outside (and music).

Eastern Market is the largest (and maybe the oldest) public market district in the US, we Detroiters kind of take it for granted sometimes IMO, but I think it's a superior, less touristy experience than the more famous Pike Place Market in Seattle.

I'm being gifted expired food.

Just cleaned out my MIL's pantry a few weeks ago after her death. I had hopes of donating the food to the post office food drive, but they were dashed by the "best by August 1997" dates on a few cans.

I'm being gifted expired food.

I had a similar thought: "oh wow, boss, did you notice that this expired last Tuesday? I'm glad you didn't eat it either!"
