I don't "get" Red Velvet Cake

The recipe also calls for a small amount of chocolate. Anywhere from 1 to 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder. I didn't taste chocolate, though

What is the coolest thing that a restaurant has ever brought you instead of a basket of bread?

I go to a Jewish deli that brings you rye bread and dill pickles when you sit down.

I don't "get" Red Velvet Cake

Maybe it started with Oprah ( but I won't EVEN go there). Or, did it start with Sprinkles? But, it seems that very recently everyone's in love with Red Velvet Cake. I don't get it.

I had never had this cake and thought it was something speical. I happened to mention this to a friend and yesterday, she brought me a slice of it. It tasted like cake, and not an especially good one, and had cream chees frosting. But, what I absolutley DETESTED was the red food coloring. Is there a reason for this? After having two bites, I noticed my tongue and gums were RED. I rinsed my mouth twice and when I got home brushed my teeth and it was still red. This morning my mouth was back to normal, but the red still showed itself upon exiting - if you know what I mean.

I looked up various recipes and while proportions vary, most had 2 ounces, 1/4 cup!!!! of red food coloring. YUCK

What am I missing here? I'll take plain pound cake over this anyday!

Sometimes a doughnut is just a doughnut!

Oh, come on!!
I think the point of the OP is the fact that the shop IS NOT making fun of mental illness. It's a gimmick in a donut shop. If the shop was called "The Shining" and they had a Nurse Rachet donut along with the Major Head Trauma donut, would anyone be in an uprage.... I think NOT.

What's the Lesser Sin When it Comes to Storing Coffee?

This is what I do to. I take out enough beans for a week and keep the rest in the freezer. Beans should be ground at room temperature so that the oil in them is released.

Recreating Jack in The Box Tacos

How is the overall texture of the final product? Way back when, my neighbor worked for JITB and actually made all the tortillas for their tacos. He told me they are filled and frozen, then popped in the deep fryer when ordered. I haven't had their tacos in many moons, but I'm wondering if they are still prepared that way. I also remember that the JITB tacos of my youth had sliced American cheese food instead of real cheese.

Chicken Fried Steak

Claim Jumper also has a rockin' meat loaf and this is something I usually will NOT order at restaurants.

Shipping Perishables in a Cooler with the Luggage ....

I went to Florida to visit my sis and she couldn't find Tri Tip and asked me to bring her some. I checked with the airlines in advance, and I did have to tell them when I checked it that there was dry ice in the container, but they took it, no problem, and it went in the baggage hold.

The only thing I was disappointed in was that the Tri Tips were frozen solid, they were packed with dry ice, but by the end of my trip (From CA to FL was a whole day), the tri tips were thawed out!! Of course, I didn't use a huge cooler but I thought they would stay frozen.

But, my point, be sure to tell the airlines that you've got perishables packed with dry ice!

thai food in orange county

It's not a chain as far as I know, but SmokeyDoke refered to it as part of a chain...

Where for best cold noodle dishes?

There is a place in Tustin called Ono Ono Hawaiian. This is not a part of a similarily named chain restaurant. It is owned by a very nice couple and since the wife is Korean, they also have Korean dishes on the menu. I love their Macadamian Nut Cold Noodles.

I have eaten at Thai Princess. Their food is good, but I prefer Thai Pepper. I did really like the service at Thai Princess. Very fast and friendly. What chain is Thai Pepper??

We went for lunch and had lunch specials. The soup had so much mint in it, that even after we got our entrees, I could still taste mint on my palate. We shared dishes and I tried the Crying Tiger. The meat was overcooked and tough. The dipping sauce was good though. I had ordered their self-proclaimed "best pad thai in the US" hoping to find something better that what is generally offered in Thai restaurants. It was really bad. The noodles were mushy and came out in a big glob. The bean sprout and cabbage were limp instead of crispy. What really irked me is that I ordered it a #9 spicy. The server/owner refused to make it the way I requested. When the dish arrived, it was bland. I asked (3 times) for a spice tray and she did not want to give it to me. I finally asked another server to bring it to me and she rushed over and almost refused to let me use it. She insisted that I only use the dried powdered chili and not the chili paste.

I also tried one of the curries and it was good, just nothing special.

I have found only one restaurant in my area that I consider decent. It's Thai Pepper on Talbert & Beach. It's a hole-in-the-wall in a corner stip mall. There are about 6 tables, so it's mostly take out. There Pad Se Ew is incredible. Smoky and charred from the wok and they use Chinese broccoli.

I find the Thai Spice chain to be mostley inedible. The one on Irvine Blvd is plain awful. I've eaten at the one on Jeffery and it is only good if you have them cook to order. Otherwise, the same awful quality of the rest of the chain.

If you're speaking of the one on Muirlands, I ate there once and the food was horrid.

Pizza Dough Bread Sticks

I'm using fresh, prepared pizza dough.

What is String Roast Beef?

I was going to order it just to try it, but this description (and pics!) scares me :-)
If it helps, it's on the appetizer menu and the 4 strings are $3.95.

how to make a ladybug cake?

Here a pic of one that's flat and just as cute as a bug!

Anyone else had these potato chips yet ?

hmmm the pic didn't attach

Anyone else had these potato chips yet ?

Are these the chips to which you refer? If so, in my area, these are available in all grocery stores including Wal Mart

What is String Roast Beef?

And do you have a recipe?
One of my fave Chinese (Cantonese) restaurants offers this as an appetizer. Never had it but was curious. Today for lunch, we went to a Taiwanese/Cantonese restaurant and there it is on the menu.
Only 2 places I've seen it offered and just want to know what it is.... the restaurant today had on the menu "4 strings" for the serving.

Looking for place to eat in Costa Mesa or Irvine area!!

Wasn't the OP asking for something more upscale than Greek Island Grill? I think Avo's is an excellent suggestion for good food and a nice atmosphere.

REVIEW: Slater's 50/50, Anaheim Hills w/pics

OMG those burgers look amazing, but I love the pile of fried stuff!

What's This Gadget?

whoo hoo.. good job! I would never have gone in that direction.
Thanks all, now I can sleep tonight!

What's This Gadget?

A local paper columnist ran it as a contest. Then, the next week, she said she only had one response because it was so difficult to identify, but she didn't tell us what it was! I emailed her, but no response and I'm dying of curiosity!

She did identify it as a "kitchen gadget".

What's This Gadget?

OK, who wants to play? I'm completely stumped.

Pizza Dough Bread Sticks

well, i have trouble getting my oven past 500 so i would probably have to go with a more moderate over. When I tried to cook them in a hot open, they really over-browned.

I'm humbled. I thought this would have been a no-brainer, but my first efforts were awful.

Pizza Dough Bread Sticks

Thanks todao, I appreciate the thoughtful response, I think the oven may have been too hot and nice tip to oil the hands!
Question, if it's over proofed, should I just toss?

Pizza Dough Bread Sticks

I had to LOL at the baking zen. But seriously, I have a friend that is so precise when she bakes that I get annoyed, but the results are Martha Stewart everytime! She bakes bread like it was yesterday and her pies are beautiful.

Spice of the Angels

Thank you both so much. Yes, Surfas does have it, but I was surprised that it was more expensive than would I could find online (plus the drive to Culver City) and Penzeys wished me good luck at finding it locally. A couple of people suggested Bristol Farms, but no go. I tried Wm Sonoma and Sur la Table, no luck.

I was surprised the Italian grocery didn't know what I was looking for because I thought it was common knowledge that in the Spring, retired Italian Carmelite nuns roam the wild fennel fields on the Tuscan hillsides and shake the fennel flowers into the scooped skirts of their habits. Rare? How can this stuff be rare and hard to find??
