Burrata cheese in Orlando...
wow! that sounds amazing! was that your own inspiration or did you use someone's recipe?
4 Rivers Smokehouse Winter Park
i hate to disagree with such avid bbq fans like myself, but i don't get it. i had the ribs and my wife had the pulled pork and overall we were both dissapointed. the pork was pre sauced to the point where the meat flavor did not come through, and the ribs to me were under smoked and under seasoned. i found myself working on them a bit more than i like. i know they shouldnt fall off the bone like steaming, but my teeth got a workout.
i get that they are texas style, which normally means a non-aggressive rub, but this tasted like just salt and pepper. it seemed like they kiss it on a grill too before they serve it and it reminded me of something people make in their backyard. the sauce was good. spicy and complex. but to me, real bbq is judged first without sauce, and since they pre sauced it, makes me wonder if they're hiding something. our first time there we had the mac n cheese, slaw, pot. salad, and beans. the beans were really good, but the mac tasted like it had never seen an oven and reminded me a bit like cafeteria style mac n cheese.
the 2nd time i went i got the brisket to see what the big deal was since i am already not a huge fan of brisket. it was good, a little dry but well smoked. i've been on chow before talking about bbq in orlando and i still truly believe no one beats blackwater(the original on orange ave). if you get there at 11am and order pulled pork and watch them hand pull it from the whole butt, its like i can feel my mouth watering. hopefully you all have been there.
serious foodie traveling to n.o.
i am going to n.o. in february and am narrowing down my places to eat in a 3 day span.
i was thinking mothers for po boys, maybe deanies for bbq shrimp, and cochon or august for a nicer meal.
are these good choices? if not, what is and also what might be a destination that only locals know about? i will eat anuthing just no gumbo or jambalaya, i am not a fan of either.
baby lamb in orlando
i am trying to buy a baby lamb for the holidays. i live in orlando but can travel if necessary. does anyone know where to get one?
Lechoneras in Orlando or Kissimmee?
trust me when i tell you that lechon is my life. you won't find any places that have whole pigs on display. most places i've been to you have to order them in advance. surprisingly, there is a filipino place on east colonial that has lechon roasts i think every first and third sunday. if you know about lechon, the filipinos do it amazing.
Orlando Pizza?
i am really surprised no one has mentioned goodfellas on alafaya. they have great pies because they use a low moisture mozzarella and a higher quality one as well for a great taste. i also am a big flippers guy. their neopolitan style is very tasty.
orlando-q's bbq on narcoossee and 528
has anyone tried that roadside bbq joint on narcoossee rd right after the 528? there are always people there and it looks so small that its gotta be good. let me know.
Fresh Unique Seafood in Central Florida?
not sure if you're willing to make the drive, but on the 520 on the way to cocoa is a hole in the wall seafood joint thats my personal favorite. "crab heaven" is in between 2 car dealerships and if you drive to fast you'll miss it. the only thing they sell is seafood, no meat. they've got clams, oysters, shrimp, blue and snow crabs, and a couple varieties of fish. the place has non matching chairs(everyone is different) with brown butcher paper as your placemat and dollar store beer mugs. it's a real local dive and i love it.
best wings in orlando
i went to g. junk. last night and tried the wings. i liked them. great building heat, really intense spice blend, very southwestern w/ an emphasis on cumin. my only complaint would be that i like a little twang in mine, some kind of vinegar or acid punch. besides that, definetely a unique wing and i would recommend it to anyone who likes wings. a side note, you should know they have a light breading on them if you're not into that kind of thing.
Blue crab and crawfish in Orlando
do you want them live to cook or are you just looking for restaurants to eat them?
butcher shops in orlando
are there any independent butcher shops in orlando? something old school where you can actually get meat butchered instead of picking it from a case. i have been to pettys in longwood and they are good, but $$$. i am even willing to travel a bit to find somewhere authentic where i can request specific cuts of meat. any suggestions?
best diner in orlando
since i moved here, i noticed there really isn't a large diner culture down here. especially one that's open either really late or 24 hrs. something local besides denny's and ihop. i personally like 5 and diner on e. colonial by alafaya. they make really good burgers and have a menu that goes all day. are there any others like this in orlando, or am i stuck eating krystal's every time i go out downtown?
best wings in orlando
i've been here for four years and am still trying to find the best wing, and i don't prefer chains. no buffalo wild wings, ale house, or wing shack. i am talking about a local joint that makes there own sauce, not pre-made, and really distinct. so far for me, the best has been in this dive off boggy creek rd called third base pub. no joke, awesome. i thought i was gonna get killed walking in there since my wife and i were the only non-caucasians in there, but i was surprised to see everyone was super nice. we drank cheap beer and played pool and ate some of the most unique buffalo wings ever. when asked what's there secret, the owner told me there spice blend has heat, but also savory herbs in it as well. really really good. but i love to to try new places, so let me know.
non chain, orlando fast food
i'll give you hot dog heaven, even though the sausage king on orange and central makes a mean dog after the clubs let out. i have been to johnny's and i don't know what the big deal is. to me, they use cheap meat and it doesn't even taste seasoned. last week i went to graffiti junktion in thornton park and had the best burger in orlando. hand formed patties, nice portuguese/italian bun, and a list of toppings that meets any craving. my brother and i split 2, one with blue cheese and bacon(my favorite), the other with chili, cheese, bacon, sour cream, and a fried egg. both were really tasty. i've heard great things about chilango's mexican in longwood, and they fact they serve tounge makes me more excited to go. anything is better than tijuana flats.
LaSpada's Original Philly Cheesesteak in Orlando
I as well have been getting the cheesesteak cravings after reading all these posts. i went to brianto's this weekend after a source close to me had heard the myth about them flying in amoroso rolls in every morning. you walk in and they've even got the order etiquette on the wall like it's the "soup nazi's" cheesesteak spot. i order my usual, cheesesteak wit and with provolone cheese. one word to describe the sandwich: BOOO! really soft bread that they had to heat up in the oven, cheap cheese, semi raw onions, and meat that tasted like......wait, it didn't taste like anything. i will try laspada now, but after dissapointments at briantos, famous phils, and philly connection, i'm not sure there's hope. i'm just waiting for someone to tell me subway has the best cheesesteak now.
