Great news for cooks in Orange County!

RIP: Sue Ann's American Kitchen in Placentia

Yeah I'm not really surprised. We were there a few times. First time it was pretty good. Second time not so good. Third time worse than the second. Loved the retro look of the place.

Great Porchetta Sandwich at Wheat and Sons (Anaheim Packing District)

Yes, we have also had some great sandwiches and meat from Wheat & Sons. You described the great Porchetta sandwich and potatoes perfectly. In addition, the Bratwurst sandwich was also excellent -- the best I've ever had.

In the meat department, I asked the butcher to cut some pork chops for dinner one night. He cut some boneless chops from a pork loin. Simply seasoned and broiled, they were absolutely delicious -- great texture, tasty, tender, with just the right amount of yummy fat. In conversation with him a few days later, he said the meat was Berkshire heritage pork locally sourced.

We will be going back often!

Can't get my Le Creuset interior clean

Try using Dip-It, the product for cleaning coffeemakers, per the instructions on the package. It whitens the interiors of my Le Creuset dutch ovens.

Guisados Coming to Downtown LA

Great news! We were at the Boyle Heights location a week ago and had an assortment of delicious tacos and a quesadilla. All were delicious, great home-made tortillas, nicely stuffed with chicharron, mole poblano, shrimp, etc. The salsas and sauces were especially good -- very tasty with just the right amount of heat. The shrimp tacos were the absolute best I've ever had -- the shrimp was NOT overcooked, as is usually the case. Nice variety of tasty aguas as well, including the Armando Palmero (a mixture of the limon + jamaica aguas. The owner was gracious and attentive, as was the entire staff. He mentiobned the new DTLA location. We will be going to Guisado's again soon.

Restaurants open on Christmas Day [San Francisco]

Visiting SF over Christmas. Anybody know of good or great restaurants open on Christmas Day for lunch and/or dinner?

Thanks.

Ritter's Steam Kettle?

We tried to go there today for lunch and were looking forward to trying the molasses bacon wrapped shrimp and a pan roast. Unfortunately, we sat there for maybe 10 minutes and received no service, while a couple seated after us received water and bread immediately after being seated, so we left and went elsewhere.

In addition to the service problem, the air inside the restaurant was hot and steamy -- either the a/c couldn't keep up or it was set way too high.

Artisan Bread in Orange County, CA

Crave makes a very tasty and tangy (and large) sourdough loaf that they sell. Crave is a restaurant in downtown Santa Ana at 410 W. Fourth St., which is also excellent for breakfast and lunch.

Any recs for French macarons in Orange County?

Layer Cake opened in Fullerton a month ago and we bought some French macaroons recently. They weren't that great -- we've been buying them at Paris in a Teacup for maybe a year now and they are consistently much better -- smoother texture, better flavors, etc.

That being said, the food at Layer Cake Fullerton is excellent. We've been there twice for breakfast/brunch. Interesting ingredients, combinations of flavor, and presentation both times.

Chichen Itza Not So Great

We loved going to the location near Mac Arthur Park on W. 6th St. Great food, wonderful room, and good service. Sadly its been gone now, having closed a couple of years ago. We took our time going to the original one at Mercado La Paloma, but finally went and it was totally forgettable on our one and only visit last summer.

Need Olive Oil recommendation

California Olive Ranch is excellent and fairly widely available. Trader Joe's California Estate is also pretty good and about 1/4 cheaper.

Hand made Mexican Chorizo

I've found that the Mexican chorizo from the Vallarta nearest us (Anaheim) has little flavor doesn't have a lot of flavor (but it's also not greasy).

What do you think of the prepared foods at Whole Foods?

I recently discovered the best store-bought soups ever, at the Whole Foods. Called "Fresh Kitchen," these soups are packaged in a plastic pouch, which makes for a fresher taste and longer shelf life according to the label.

I've tried the Ginger Carrot Soup, the Lemon Chicken Artichoke Soup, and the Posole Soup. All were excellent -- rich, thick, and fresh-tasting. The Ginger Carrot actually had some nice heat to it. The Lemon Chicken Artichoke had a lot of other vegetables in it in addition to artichokes. The Posole wasn't exactly like Mexican Pozole, but was good nonetheless, with chicken and hominy, and also some heat. There might have been a fourth variety that we didn't try.

I found these at the Whole Foods in Tustin (Orange County and they're presumably available elsewhere. The cost is about $7 for 24 oz.

Hand made Mexican Chorizo

Then maybe you should head to Orange County sometime. Ochoa's Chorizo in Santa Ana has coarser, more traditional, and hand-made pork (and also chicken) chorizo of varying heats. When I posted about this topic a few weeks ago, a chowhound volunteered Ochoa's and it was pretty good (cash only).

Hand made Mexican Chorizo

The best Mexican chorizo is from Huntington Meats in the Farmers Market at Third and Fairfax. Spicy and complex flavors -- its outstanding.

Mexican Chorizo in OC

Anybody know where to buy tasty/spicy Mexican chorizo in Orange County? The best I've ever had was from Huntington Meats at the Farmers Market in LA -- very very good! I've tried the chorizo from some of the Mexican markets in OC (La Reina, Vallarta, Northgate, etc.), but they don't compare to the chorizo from Huntington Meats.

Santa Monica Seafood

Geez, nothing gets this blog going like a post about Santa Monica Seafoods. For some fish and seafoods its okay, for others it's somewhat disappointing. That's also true for Gelson's, Bristol Farms, Whole Foods, and other specialty markets. For some reason, SMS seems to spark special ire.

Smoqued in Orange?

I went about two weeks ago on a weekday, sat at the counter, and had lunch. BBQ Brisket Sandwich was okay, nothing special but not bad either. Service was unprofessional and ditzy. The young girl who waited on me was friendly when I first sat down, but then I was ignored. She spent the remainder of my time there flirting with a hot young guy who'd come in and sat near but not at the bar. I had to wait a frustratingly long time to get further service like my order or a drinks refill. And then it was an even longer wait to get my check...

Knotts Berry Farm

Mrs. Knott's Fried Chicken Restaurant is very, very tired. The building is shabby -- ramshackle, dirty, poorly painted, not well-kept up. The silverware is flimsy, the "glassware" plastic, and the dinnerware the most basic cafeteria-style. And the food is ordinary-minus on every count. They've been coasting on their "reputation" for a very, very long time. It's unfortunate.

La Mirada, La Habra, East Whittier???

G Burger is an option, trendy gourmet burgers at 421 E. La Habra Blvd. Probably the best thing happening in this area for lunch.

We've tried to like Moro's Cuban, but on two occasions food has been spotty to good and service has had problems.

LaBrea Bakery frozen take & Bake

Finally found the Take 'n Bake products at Ralph's Fresh Fare in Villa Park. They had the baguettes and dinner rolls, but none of the five Take 'n Bake items listed on the La Brea website. They weren't frozen or refrigerated, but sitting out with other La Brea Bakery baked goods. The bakery guy said they were "parbaked." Instructions said to bake at 385 for 8-10 minutes. I bought the Take 'n Bake baguettes and baked according to instructions. They came out tough and very, very crusty and there was no aroma of fresh baked bread. I would have done better if I'd bought the already baked baguettes, which are usually pretty great.
