Need recommendations for lunch today near El Cerrito

How about Zaki's? Delicious Middle Eastern herbed roast chicken and other very good dishes.

Petaluma Pie ~ All Things Pie, All the Time

Picked up a chocolate-coconut pie yesterday PM. Everyone at the dinner table liked it; not too sweet, with the best crust I've had in a long time. Nice people behind the counter too. Would go back to try other flavors.

Cupola @ The Westfield Shopping Center

We were at Cupola end of October. Had a lovely meal. Had the Feast of Feasts deal. The portions LOOKED small, but by the time we left, we were stuffed. I thought the Dome Salad was especially good.

Any place one can buy Kouign Amann in SF?

La Boulange Bakery in Cole Valley had Kouign Amann this morning! I bought a couple of them ($2.50 each), and they were good. Not quite swoon-worthy but good. Next, search for and try Starter Bakery's version.

Good mild salsa?

I agree on Casa Sanchez mild red salsa. It's consistently good. Also available in organic option. I don't care for TJ's salsas much -- they used to make a decent Pico de Gallo before, but changed recipe/vendor about a year ago and it's not so good now.

Famous roasted chicken in East Bay?

Thank you, Wolfe. We ended up at Zaki today, and the roast chicken was fantastic! The chicken shwarma was delicious too. Very good value as well. Would definitely go back. It's good to know there are so many great options in that part of East Bay.

Famous roasted chicken in East Bay?

Zaki's! Yes, that's the one. Thank you both!

Famous roasted chicken in East Bay?

I'll be in the Berkeley-Emeryville area for lunch. I recall some posts about a great roast chicken place (possibly Middle Eastern spiced) in Albany or El Cerrito? Does this ring a bell with anyone? What other good places for lunch in that part of East Bay? Thanks in advance.

2011 King's Cake Sightings

Saw one on display at Noe Valley Bakery (24th Street, San Francisco) the other day.

Kosher dessert for shabbat?

Thank you, Sugartoof. I heard back from the hosts, and I am told I can bring anything. Will definitely check out Cinderella Bakery though.

Kosher dessert for shabbat?

Thanks, Artemis. I will check out the blog. I *think* the dessert can be just kosher -- I will ask the hostess.

Kosher dessert for shabbat?

We're going to our first shabbat dinner. Where is a good Kosher bakery in or near San Francisco? What are some of your favorite Jewish desserts? TIA.

Thorough Bread & Pastry (Castro), SF report w/ pics

I agree about their baguettes -- they are excellent, and the price is right. Their savory gougeres are quite good too. Now I have to go buy some.

Where to buy bottarga?

Wow -- thanks for the info. I had some friends bring back bottarga from Sardinia. But, it's great to know there are local sources.

Hamachi kama question

I'd like to try making Hamachi kama (broiled Yellowtail neck) at home. Does anyone know where I can buy this fish part or the whole fish, ideally in SF? Also, if Yellowtail is not easily available, what would be a good substitute? TIA.

Where to buy bottarga?

Where would one find some bottarga to make spaghetti with bottarga at home?

This article in The Atlantic magazine got me curious.

Restaurants near Farmhouse in Russian River area

We like Willow Wood Market Cafe and Underwood Bar & Bistro in Graton. Willow Wood is more casual. Same owners, I believe. Both good to great food depending on what you order. Underwood is not open for lunch on weekends. I was at Willow Wood last Sunday and today. Very crowded. They don't take reservations, but the wait is never as long as they say it will be.

Indonesia Java Restaurant on Clement

I've eaten there twice. I too ordered the egg foo yung, just because you don't see it on menus much. It was actually good -- at least what I remembered egg foo yung to taste like. I think some people like their fries too; kind of sweet with red pepper flakes but not too spicy. Rest of the dishes we had were not that memorable but not bad either. Nice people who run it.

Christmas Eve menu ideas for cooking at home for a small group?

What are you cooking for Christmas Eve dinner? I am looking for menu ideas -- for a group of 5, that includes one young child. Something besides turkey or ham? Thanks!

Where to buy lots of pretzel twists in SF?

I want to make a big batch of nuts & pretzels snack mix for the holiday season. Just checked Costco in SF, and they are not carrying their usual life-time-supply of pretzels right now. Do you know of other sources for large quantity of pretzels with similar Costco prices? TIA.

Sebastopol and Santa Rosa: Village Bakery - organic Danish breads, princess cake, fig anise bread, challah, sourdough, and lots of stuff with cardamom

Wow! Thanks for the thorough posts! I feel like I've been there. :) Will definitely check out the Sebastopol location as I'll be spending more time in that area soon.

Viking Professional range service/repair in SF?

ctssfo, thanks again for the referral. John Lee came by this morning and fixed our oven and gave our stove an overall check-up. Nice guy; someone who know what he is doing and does things in the good, "old fashioned" way. :)

Good bakery in/near Sebastopol

Nightingale Breads! Thank you!

Sebastopol Notes

Had lunch at Himalayan Tandoori today. The momos were good as was the accompanying sauce.. The Express Lunch offerings are a good deal. Comes with cup of soup, entree, salad, brown/white rice, naan, and a small dessert for $9.99 to $10.99 depending on your entree choice. I had the chicken curry and my husband had the lamb curry. The lamb curry was a bit too "lamb-y" for me but really good sauce. The dessert was rice pudding (made with basmati rice with hints of cardamom, I think). I don't usually like rice pudding, but this was a yummy batch. The waiter was very friendly and constantly smiling. We will definitely go back.

Good bakery in/near Sebastopol

About a month or so ago on this board, I read about a bakery that bakes amazing baguettes, etc. in or near Sebastopol. Can't find the name of the bakery again. I don't think it was Wild Flour or some of the places that make fancier French pastries...does this ring a bell with anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Melanie? TIA.

Viking Professional range service/repair in SF?

Thanks, ctssfo! I'll call them tomorrow morning.

Viking Professional range service/repair in SF?

My 15+ year old Viking oven is acting up; we smell gas when the oven is on. Is this something I need to get a "certified Viking service tech" to look at or will any licensed plumber do? I've read a Viking technician's service call costs $300! Also, any plumber you would recommend in San Francisco? TIA.

What is Frischkäse and where do I buy it in SF?

Thanks all. Very helpful. Well, the recipe is more of assembly instructions involving olives, carrots and Frischkäse; sort of crudité than anything else. It sounds like Philly Cream Cheese or Ricotta may do the trick. Thanks again!

What is Frischkäse and where do I buy it in SF?

Found a recipe that calls for Frischkäse, which I think is some kind of fresh cheese in German. Where would I find whatever it is or its equivalent? TIA.

Cool, modern lounge for a party: 150 people

I just went to the opening party of the Penthouse at One Market building. It has gorgeous views of the entire San Francisco Bay, Bay Bridge to Golden Gate Bridge, and the food/catering was done by One Market Restaurant which is also in the building. The space had been furnished, for the party, with ultra modern furniture with multiple seating areas. It was pretty darn cool. I think the One Market Restaurant handles the renting of the space.
