Al Di La... Overrated?

Thanks for the feedback guys. Guess I am not alone in my sentiments. I will probably give it one more (possibly last) shot; maybe order the oxtail and seppia and the hanger steak-I think that is supposed to be good-before I officially call it quits. Also, have to agree about Convivium Osteria (a place I always forget for some reason!!). It really is one of the best in the slope.

Al Di La... Overrated?

Al Di La is one of those that I constantly hear is amazing in thread after thread after thread. Bruni loved it, NY Mag loved it, etc. I have only been there twice but have yet to be amazed, and never thought it was even half as good as Franny's or even Get Fresh. I am hoping I just went on two off nights or that I ordered the wrong dishes (Once the risotto special with the squid, the other time the Pork Loin). Basically, I would like to be proved wrong. What dishes are the best to order there? What makes it so special to people? It's always mobbed and I have yet to find a good reason to wait.

ISO grass-fed steak

Another suggestion-if you are willing to make the trip to Williamsburg Brooklyn- apparently the restaurant Diner has good grass fed steak and burgers too.

Southern Spice amazing indian food? worth the trip?

I feel like I can't get a good read on this place. The comments on Chow have two people saying they loved it and one saying "eh, not worth the trip." The write up in the Village Voice says its the 2009 top Indian restaurant but I am not sure I trust them. (Had a bad experience with what they claimed was the top Banh Mi place). Any more feedback before I go an hour out of my way?

Restaurant recs in Bklyn near 7th Street and 3rd Ave?

Kappa Sake house is great! I was just there last night, it's at 5th ave and 6th street I believe. Highly recommend it, and much better then Bar Tano which is a good spot to grab a drink, but doesn't really deliver on the food (IMBO).

Best Indonesian Food (including outer buroughs)

It seems like everyone has an opinion on Thai, Vietnamese, Mexican, Chinese, Italian, Indian etc, etc... But I have yet to hear anything really about Indonesian. Is there any buzz about a good place? I used to frequent a spot in my home town of MD and have really missed it here in NYC... Opinions?

Kappa Sake House, 5th Ave, Brooklyn

I went to Kappa Sake House the other night and now this place is one of my top favorite restaurants. We had the tofu avacado salad, the broiled mackrel, turkey and mushroom shumai, and tofu in miso. All of the dishes were awesome! And the service was great. Like so many people have already mentioned please don't let this one fall through the cracks, it really is a gem in Park Slope, an area that is rapidly becoming dominated by mediocre eating experiences. Go try it out!

Good Mexican Food Deprived New Yorker coming to West Hollywood area

So I live in New York City and let's face it, most of the Mexican food here is severly lacking and I often feel very deprived-which is why I am so excited to be coming into the LA area next week! Specifically I am going to be in West Hollywood and wanted to know if I could get any recommends on good Mexican places to eat while I am in town? I am not above hole in the walls, carts, etc...

Best Gluten Free Beer

So far I have found that the only gluten free beer that comes close to tasting like the real stuff and still gives you that nice beer buzz is Green's. Are there any other's of note, preferably nothing sweet and whimpy like Bard's?

Good Cheap Restaurant in the West Village for Dinner Tonight

I am looking for a good place to eat tonight in the West Village (specifically around the Christopher Street 1 train) that is easy on the wallet ($7-$15) but has good food. Any suggestions?

Minetta, WD-50, Corton, or Aldea

Yeah, it may just be a question of personal taste in terms of the char. I just found it overwhelming as opposed to complimentary. The steak at Peter Lugers is always (and remains) at the top on my list. I ended up getting reservations at 10pm. I think it may be one of those deals where after the first time as long as you chat up the management a little, they should be able to hook you up with a more direct line that makes it easier to get reservations between 6 and 10 as opposed to before/after. That was the case at least when I was there.

Minetta, WD-50, Corton, or Aldea

I went to Minetta Tavern the other night and although the service was good(great cocktails, the petite omlet was pretty good) I was very under wowed by the steak. I am not sure if anyone else has had this experience (based on previous posts it seems not) but the outside was charred almost to the point of being burned and it lacked the flavoring and buttery quality one would expect of an aged steak its price. Maybe it was an off night, but I was disappointed.

Tamarillos

I am trying to get this ingredient for a recipe I am making. Does anyone know of a grocery store/deli/etc that sells them in Manhattan?

Best Gluten Free Pizza

I have been to Mozzarellis and it was pretty good, but still in my mind lacking. Does anyone have suggestions or ideas? I am worried that the nyc restaurant industry has not caught up to the changing times with this one, but am hoping to be proved wrong.

Go to GET FRESH in PARK SLOPE!!!!!

I just went to this place tonight, and I wanted to let all of my fellow foodies know what a great experience I had. Honestly, just go! I ordered the seared Tuna with Heirlooms and Seaweed salad (salty, nicely balanced and incredibly fresh) and the Lamb Chops- (very succulent, served with home made tortillas-the chef's mother makes them-and heirloom beans) and was blown away. I especially wanted to get the word out because although the food was great, the place was pretty empty on a Saturday night and I would hate to see this one go under. I am still kicking myself for not getting more of a word out about Little D's, which just closed, and I feel is a real loss to the neighborhood and the New York Restaurant scene in general. Bottom line a place like Miracle Grill (which besides the fish tacos) is pretty lousy should not be packed on a Saturday night, while this one is half empty. No real foodie should stand for it. Please, take your money to a place that deserves it, go to GET FRESH in PARK SLOPE BROOKLYN. It's one of the best places in Park Slope.

Best Spanish Food in Manhattan

Hi,

I am trying to find a good Spanish place (as in food from Spain) to take some family from out of town. They are real foodies so I am hoping to wow them a little. I have gone to Boqueria and liked it but wanted to see if anyone has other suggestions? Does Casa Mono, for example, trump Boqueria? How does the recently NY Times reviewed La Fonda del Sol measure up? Are there any other dinning gems out there I haven't thought of? Thanks!
