Where to eat good Italian in San Diego?

Where on 5th in Hillcrest is their new place? Did they take over someplace that closed?

seeking authenic Chinese in San Diego (or area)

We just ate at Ba Ren for the first time and were blown away. By far the best Chinese I've had in San Diego. We had the beef teppan yaki (sp?) and the sizzling rice chicken dish. Both were absolute winners with rich, complex flavors and textures, as well as beautiful presentation. Our friendly server (an older woman, maybe the owner?) explained each dish before serving. Every part of our experience was positive. I can't wait to go back and delve deeper into their expansive menu!

Spread.. Nouveau Comfort Food

FTR, there are only a couple of the hanging chairs. The rest of them are grounded and more comfy. We've eaten there about 5 times now and we've had some really great food. We usually just have the owners make recommendations and we're always pleasantly surprised by what they send out.

On a side note, they've been really slammed since the FN show aired and it's showing in rotation still so I'd recommend making a reservation to be sure you can get in.

New restaurant opening in RSF

Loic sells pastries and other baked goods at several farmer's markets. I know for sure he's at Little Italy on Saturday and RSF on Sunday. His pastries - especially the croissants - are really amazing so I'm excited to see what he does with a full menu!

Baltimore & DC for the holidays

Thanks for the O&A tips and for the Ethiopian food clarification. We love Thai food so thanks for that rec too!

Komi's website says you can only reserve 1 month out so it's too early. Definitely will try to get in there.

Baltimore & DC for the holidays

Thanks for the great recommendations! Can't wait to hit some of these spots. Don't think I'll get to do EM on a Saturday as that's when we arrive/leave (Xmas Day/NY Day). We'll be there mid-week though so hopefully we'll get at least a sampling of the goods they offer.

Yes on Oohs & Aahs. Couldn't recall the name when I posted earlier. Really looking forward to visiting this place! Any specific reco's on what to order?

I used to live in Adams Morgan in the early '80s. It's where I first discovered Ethiopian food. Glad to hear that's still the go-to area for it.

If any other haunts come to mind, please post them. I'm so excited to get back there - I was a poor college kid with limited food experience when I was there before, It seems both dining scene as well as my appreciation have matured since then so I'm looking forward to some good food!

Baltimore & DC for the holidays

Thanks for the rec's so far!

Since we'll be in the area for a full week (albeit, a holiday week), we'd love recs for bfast, lunch & dinner. We appreciate high-end dining, but also love great street food and other lower-end fare too. Coming from San Diego, we have our fill of touristy spots so we're really looking for great local haunts. We will have a car, but given parking in DC, we'll likely rely more on Metro.

We'd definitely like to hit a food truck or 2 while we're there - are there any you'd recommend in Baltimore? Also, do they operate year-round? A friend recommended a cool soul food place in DC that we're going to check out. Eastern Market is high on the list too. I didn't mention it before, but we are cheese mongers, so any cheese shops or other specialty food shop recommendations in either city would be great too.

Again, thanks for any and all recommendations!

Baltimore & DC for the holidays

We are flying east from San Diego to Baltimore on Xmas Day thru New Year's Day and plan to head down to DC for a couple days mid-week. We'd love local CH recommendations for both cities. We expect to be in DC for my bday (28th) and I'd love any special occasion rec's for that. Also, are there any food trucks we should check out? How about specialty markets? Ethnic eateries?

Thanks in advance for helping make our 1st vacation in several years a tasty one!

Mariscos German

Just brought home a tostada mixta (enough for 2pp) from the truck in South Park. They said they are there every day from 9am-7pm.

Poppa's is the fish guy that has the live sea urchins. They cut the top and give you a spoon.

Marisco's German

Was in South Park yesterday late afternoon and the MG truck was in the Gala parking lot (Grape/Fern). I've seen it there a couple times in the past 2 weeks but I have had a chance to stop and ask about their hours.

Visiting San Diego This Weekend

If you're downtown, I'd definitely recommend hitting the Little Italy Mercato. You can get live sea urchin...and a spoon to eat the roe (uni) while you shop. For something less tame, the same vendor (Poppa's) will shuck you some oysters while you wait. The entire market is great with 4 blocks of cool stuff.

Knight Salumi had a decent supply of lardo at the Little Italy market today and I suspect they'll have some at the Hillcrest market tomorrow.

interesting vegetarian restaurant options

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Spread in North Park yet! We've eaten there twice and were blown away by the food. They apparently shop at farmer's markets every day and the menu changes daily. Last week they filmed a 'Best Thing I Ever Ate' episode with Tyler Florence raving about one of their dishes. When we were there they had these Huitlacoche (sp?) nachos - house made tortilla chips, corn smut and cheese - amazing! If they're on the menu, it'll kinda hit the Mexican request. Beyond that, it's a pretty ecclectic menu.

Anyway, definitely worth checking out!

Best Farmer's Market in San Diego?

I just checked in with the market manager for Little Italy and in reply to the question on whether the hours were being extended until 3:30pm, she sent the following:
"We are till open until 1:30. Street closure is until 3:30, to allow for vendor closedown and packing out. The street closure signs occasionally lead people to make this (wrong) assumption."

Best croissants in San Diego?

I love the croissants from Loic's Patisserie at the Saturday Little Italy farmer's market. They're like buttery air.

Comic-Con 2010 -- New and improved!

Great list - unfamiliar with a couple of them but I'm guessing they're as solid as the ones I know. I'd add Wine Vault and Small Bar to the short cab ride list.

looking for small food huts or food carts that serve fish (ceviche)

Poppa's Fish is in several farmer's markets (Little Italy, Adams Ave, North Park, Rancho Santa Fe and Mission Hills, possibly others) and they have excellent fresh ceviche most of the time.

Best plate of Fish and Chips

I ordered the fish & chips at Studio - it's massive. It was tasty but I much prefer smaller pieces of fish than the huge slab (that got gooey with time) of fish they serve.

Visiting San Diego - Need restaurants "fit for foodies"

Wine Vault & Bistro has a 5 course tasting menu for $30 every Saturday night. You can also do the wine pairings for an additional $20. 5 courses and 5 wines for $50 is a steal, especially given the fresh, quality ingredients used and the sizes of the portions. We always wonder how they can deliver the level of quality at that price - but we're glad they do! It's a quick, easy cab trip from downtown too. Reservations strongly recommended.

We're doing some fun cheese pairings at the Slow Food thing on Saturday at 4pm. Is your demo in the same area - would love to catch it!

Transplants from Chicago - get us started in SD

I highly recommend you add Wine Vault & Bistro to your excellent list. Their 5-course Saturday night chef's tasting menu is a steal at $30. It just $50 if you do the 5, well-chosen wine flights.

San Diego is a craft brew mecca. I recommend you check out the San Diego Brewer's Guild to find out about all the amazing events, breweries, etc are within 30 minutes of downtown.

And as others have recommended, San Diego has some really great farmer's markets. Little Italy, Hillcrest and a few emerging markets like the new Adams Ave market and Poway are worth checking out.

Haven't seen the final menu so I don't know about sliders. I'll ask the chef if/when I see him at the Hillcrest location.

Opening Day at Petco Park..Where to eat?

Wine Steals' new place is set to open really soon - this week maybe. It's next to the park and includes a new venture from the same folks called Proper which is billed as a gastropub. Chef is Sean Magee who most recently was at the US Grant I believe. I've seen the menu and it looks promising.

Dog Friendly Patio Restaurants in SD..

A nice spot is the Prado front patio. We occasionally bring our dane there and he gets lots of love. Not the full menu but apps and margaritas are a fine substitute.

Also love to bring him to Hamiltons after he gets a run in at Grape St Park.

Wine Steals in Hillcrest also has a dog-friendly patio.

And thanks nileg for the code. Clearly not a dog owner.

Little River Inn, Mendocino Area, Report (times two, long).

Great post! We love the Little River Inn but it's been a few years since we've visited. It's where we got engaged so it's always held a special place. If you get the chance to stay there, the rooms are great too.

And the olalieberry cobbler is insane - the first time we had it for dessert at dinner. The next time we ordered it from room service for breakfast.
