So apparently, San Diego is the Country's Seventh Best Pizza City

New Haven undoubtedly deserves to be on this list which is about the "best" pizza, not neapolitan style which New Haven cannot be considered close to.

El Chevere, if youve been eating SD pizza, you will be glad you went to Grimaldi's in El Segundo...get off the 405 at Rosecrance...its in an office complex...so thats a little strange but just judge by the pizza!

So apparently, San Diego is the Country's Seventh Best Pizza City

the family fought a rather ugly legal battle over the name and theres nothing "stretchy" about the relation...nor is there anything soggy about the crust...the Grimaldi's in El Segundo is making excellent pizza that is closer to NYC style than anything ive had out here...ive eaten in a Vegas branch(on Eastern?) which was equally excellent.

that whole marketing ploy, build your own pizza, is such bullshit...i nearly puke every time i hear it...like who but me decides what to put on my pizza? the owner tells you at the counter what to eat? jesus fucking christ!

the owner of Antica and president of VPN Americas is Peppe Miele...Mario Vollera worked with him at Antica, then opened South End with a partner...He is still at South End, which is a great pizzeria & wine bar, but he's also at MiDiCi as consultant/pizzaiolo...

Interesting Chinese Discovery in Torrance

I happened to be down in Torrance for Mac repair and my friend suggested we get dinner at one of his favorite Chinese restaurants...I was taken to Sea Food Town on Hawthorne Blvd...anyone familiar with this place? I was very happily surprised..very tasty and fresh salt and pepper squid(though there were a couple pieces that were strangely "tough." never had that with squid...ive had mushy, "past its "sell by" date squid, bot not this....the rest of it was excellent though...very tasty string beans w/ground meat and excellent bbq pork with chow fun...not a centimeter of gristle on the pork...not at all greasy...my friend also had a fried fish with Chinese veggies that he really liked...big portions, the fastest an order was ever brought to my table which doesnt seem like a harbinger of a good meal but they were pretty busy(with many Chinese diners) so i doubt food was lying around for long...and very friendly, helpful wait staff...all in all an excellent discovery in Torrance...

Looks interesting...I might have to try it one day..."crispy and crackly, very thin crust" doesnt sound that appealing to me...sounds too "crackly," but it is somehow appealing.

the people that own the Grimaldi's chain are related to the Brooklyn family....ive eaten in their Vegas and El Segundo branches and the pizza is as close to real NY style as Ive had west of the Hudson River.

I cant believe its been over 15 years since I walked into Peppe Miele's Antica Pizzeria in Marina Del Rey and discovered VPN, true Neapolitan Pizza. Over the years, I ate almost every weekend and truly had my eyes and gastro-intestinal system opened up to a whole, new species of pizza. Many, many times i would chat with Peppe and hear how his real goal was to educate the pizza palate of Americans. He hoped to enlighten them and help them to understand that even though pizza had become just about the favorite food of Americans, what they ate was, most often, a profoundly inferior product made up of truly distateful ingredients!
Jump ahead to recent days and Neapolitan style pizza has now been the rage in the US and, in fact, all over the world for several years now with no sign of it slowing down.

Antica Pizzeria, alas, is no more. Signor Miele had been in the restaurant biz in LA for 30 years and he was quite content to focus on his VPN Americas Pizza School, where he has been teaching aspiring, and perspiring, pizzaioli how to make the traditional pizza of Naples.

He, along with long time associate, a great pizzaiolo, restaurateur and sommelier Mario Vollera of the great pizzeria and wine bar in MDR/Venice, South End, are presently consultants and executive chefs of the latest Neapolitan pizzeria to open on Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks, MiDiCi.
The two of them had trained and consulted on 800 Degrees, which is about to explode across the US. MiDiCi, though similar in employing a "line" to assemble and bake their pizzas is more ambitious. MiDiCi definitely offers a more upscale dining experience. Two large Acunto ovens, along with an olive tree, instantly capture the diners' attention. A team is busy baking up to 500 pizzas daily, over half being the quintessential "margherita." MiDiCi is not VPN certified because of the "line" method but the pizzas are made with only the basic, traditional ingredients imported from Italy, or, like the basil, grown in house.

I had a perfectly made margherita with spicy salame and spicy calabrian sausage. Admittedly, Mario made my perfect pie though with any such large corporate operation, the biggest test will be the consistency of the pizzas made by the team. He also teased me with a scrumptious looking dessert, a nutella and fresh fruit calzone which i had to decline for health reasons.

I havent been to Blaze or any of the other new species of pizzeria popping up, but i can enthusiastically say that the San Fernando Valley finally has a great Neapolitan pizzeria with a more sophisticated dining ambience. It's about time!

Hey IPSE, youre treading on dangerous ground here! what do you mean by labeling Bronx Pizza "neapolitan" style? i was in SD for the first time in ages last week and had a vague memory from my days writing for SLICE, that someone gave Bronx Pizza a very positive review...so i was very excited to find myself nearby at lunch time...i looked in and left without trying a slice...not worth the disappointment...being born and raised in the Bronx, I was especially disappointed then incensed...i felt like ripping those giant letters off their sign! this is a picture of an unhappy ME! Bronx Pizza not only SUCKS, it aint Neapolitan!

Im a sucker for the sausage at South End...but im sure the other pizzas are great too! depends on what toppings you like...the basis of a great pizza is the crust and Mario Vollera sees to it that the crust is superb!

pizza

I checked the web site for MiDiCi on Ventura in Sherman Oaks and it seems as if Peppe Miele and Mario Vollera of VPN may be running the place, not just training them in making Neapolitan Pizza...now i'll be sure to check it out this week!

hey chowseeker1999, thanks...heres a photo of my favorite NY style pizza, Grimaldi's in El Segundo, though Westsidegal detects what is for her cultured palate, too much sugar
...for Neapolitan style I love Sotto & Settebello...its own hybrid style at South End/MDR/Venice where Mario Vollera has brought his years of experience at Antica/MDR and added his oenological expertise to create a great wine bar/pizza experience...Mozza, of course...Im planning on some pizza adventures for next 2 weeks...

forgot to shoot it but i had an excellent pie at Matteo's(actually"Little Taste of Hoboken, the smaller ristorante next door)
...Ive eaten there for 20 years(my office is across the street) excellent salads and pastas...well, i ordered a chopped salad to go last monday and was very happily surprised when they told me every monday-all day-you get a free margherita pizza with every salad order...an excellent pie...i might order it well done next time but an incredible deal!
