Other than the burger (and beer) what else do you like at Father's Office?

I went to the CC branch a few months ago and was not impressed...when you cant see the meat from an "aerial" shot, thats a bad sign...not juicy enough...these shoestring fries were good but when i saw the regular, thicker fries go by me, i regretted my choice...a very sweet waitress confided that you could bring ketchup in ...just be discreet...ha,ha! that would be the only reason id go back!

the Yelp reviews didnt sound appealing...not that i trust Yelp that much...no menu listed anywhere...i'll probably see if i can convince Sea Harbour to bring it back!

San Gabriel crawl

Well, finally made it back out to the SGV and the day had its ups and downs...Started at Sea Harbour where i wanted to get my favorite pan fried noodle dish EVER....and lo and behold, i didnt see it on the menu...the manager/owner? came over and gave me more attention and incredible patience in trying to figure out what i wanted...he pointed out all the noodle dishes on the menu but none looked like what i was looking for: the little tube like pastas(like a bucatini?) Remarkably, considering the reputation Chinese restaurants have for rudeness towards caucasians, he went to the kitchen and returned with 4 different pastas arranged on a plate but alas, still no luck...i told him id return with fotos...
So, tremendous disappointment clouded the beginning of the food extravaganza...my pain was eased by the crunchy, spicy salt and pepper squid an order of chinese broccoli and shrimp in rice noodle...
ok, off we went to the Beijing Pie House...id never been before but was treated to the best onion pancake ive had: nice crunch, nice chew, generous amount of scallions and not greasy...the meat pies: pork and fennel i really liked though my friend felt the "grassy" flavor overwhelmed the pork...the veggie pie was better, mushroom and onion and whatever else was in there was delish....but as virgin "pie" eaters, we were victimized by the northern delicacy...after struggling to pick it up with his chop sticks, my friend DK picked it up manually. One bite and it squirted its juices all over his shirt and nearly on my Nikon...Damn...whats more, the pork/fennel patty fell right out of the dough pocket...after seeing that, i took my Swiss Army Knife out and sliced mine up...so tasty but messy...
we cut short the crawl after our next stop in Hacienda Hts where we went to Earthen, after being strongly recommended to them by several CHers...sorry but the onion pancake, though lighter and flakier than Beijing Pie, had nearly no scallion in it and was a bit greasier...nope, thumbs down. i took a flyer on what sounded intriguing, a sliced, sauteed potato dish...it was hardly sauteed....more like it spent 20 seconds in a pan...practically raw...ugh...the days 2nd disappointment....we did top it off with a coffee and assorted sweets at 84 Degrees, the famous bakery, as we were told...we split several pastries that were tasty then headed on to the 10, headin' west, stuffed and mostly satisfied.

cant wait to get back to Sea Harbour....ive got the fotos, maybe they'll put that dish back in the rotation!

Tony's Pizza Napoletana Restaurant Review, San Francisco

hysterical...gotta wonder what he's thinking...but i dont really care as i know what i want when i go there

Tony's Pizza Napoletana Restaurant Review, San Francisco

are you saying that your margherita, with Caputo flour, was disappointing? and you shouldnt be charged the same as the 73 margheritas made with San Felice? i dont get it since Caputo is the go to flour for Neapolitan pizza...and personally, id have to eat a pie side by side to really perceive whatever difference there is...

Tony's Pizza Napoletana Restaurant Review, San Francisco

As much fas I love Peppe and VPN, I think youd be in excellent hands learning to make pizza from Tony G...also, ive eaten there a half dozen times and once at the newer coal oven joint next door and was never presented anything but a great pizza!....it does seem hard to believe that he offers so many styles but his margherita w/sausage is as good as any Ive ever eaten...some of the comments here seem bizarre though i suppose there certainly couldve been random bad pies produced.

Tony's Pizza Napoletana Restaurant Review, San Francisco

Agree with robertlauriston on this one...i was eating Ray's pizza at the 6th ave location in the Village back in the 70s and it was an excellent, classic NY slice...there was a Ray's on 1st ave near the Queensboro Br that also did not deserve to be tainted with the broad brush of todays sad Ray's spectacle...as an update: the Prince St Ray's is now Prince St Pizza and they are making great Ny style pizza ,including an excellent "grandma" or what i consider "Sicilian" pizza...de worth a visit for those CHers in NYC!

Searching for a great scallion pancake

thanks BarryC for the in depth response...i'll be doin this at the end of the month and will report with photos of the crawl!
and thanks chandavkl & JThur01 for endorsing Earthen...strange i havent noticed it before...

Searching for a great scallion pancake

BarryC, thanks for the feed back...wonder why i havent read much about Earthen over the years..youve been fairly recently? the other comments seemed to be a couple years old.

Searching for a great scallion pancake

going on a food crawl through SG Valley...planning on starting at Sea Harbour for a little dim sum and my favorite pan fried noodles...going to Hong Kong Plaza in Rowland Heights for squid, leaning toward Kam Hong for some kind of noodles(havent been but CHers seem to luv it) but i need recs for scallion pancake...went to Malan and wasnt impressed..it was rather "heavy" any other suggestions in SG? any other dishes that i shouldnt miss(nothing "exotic" meaning no offal and such!) thanks

Mexican near Bergamot: Juquila, Tacomiendo or Monte Alban?

Dirtywxtraolives, you should definitely return to Tacomiendo(ive only been to the Gateway locale). Ive never been disappointed...the tortillas are homemade and excellent, carnitas is excellent, a pot of beans and a more than decent salsa bar...ive never had anything but the carnitas tacos plate so i need to try some other things.

John OGroat's Sudden Demise

Just wondering if anyone knows what was up with the Ventura Blvd outpost of John OGroats? it was a favorite lunch spot of mine and generally, seemed to be rather busy...But I went to day and signs said "closed as of immediately," something close to that anyway...great biscuits, pancakes, egg breakfasts, etc...oh well, here today, gone manana!

Tacos Por Favor

didnt blame Tacos Chupas Cabras for the cig smoke...just part of the overall "uncomfortable." the tortilla fell apart on me when i picked it up so everything kinda turned into a tostada...i cant imagine you wont like Tacomiendo's tortillas! they are as good as any ive had on the westside, as are the carnitas
!

More Authentic Chinese Food in Champaign IL Than The Entire San Fernando Valley?

i luv Tampa Garden, even with its..uh, uh...eccentricities like slow service(i walk up to the counter when i need something) and not always having what i want, like the cats ears noodles or xlb when Mom is out...like their roast pork chow fun, too...id prefer a slightly wider noodle but its still very satisfying!

Tacos Por Favor

i was there(Tacos Chupas Cabras...i mean Puntas Cabras) for an early dinner, around 6pm-ish, and had to sit outside and still couldnt get away from the loud, obnoxious rap sounds! then, 3 people decided to have a smoke 2 doors away and i choked on cig smoke, not to mention a filthy seat cushion...yeah, the shrimp taco was tasty but give me Tacomiendo any day...im gonna try their shrimp next time...and thats what the carnitas tacos plate has looked like whenever ive ordered it!

Tacos Por Favor

Not me...prefer Tacomiendo on Gateway...great homemade tortillas, and chunky carnitas with crispy edges...yeah...tried Tacos Chupa Cabras(or Puntas Gordas) whatever it is on SaMo Blvd near 23st?...last time i'll go there...sorry, loud rap, hip hop music, dirty tables and seats, and the tortillas fell apart...and the shrimp fell out...nope...good for the tattooed crowd, i guess!

Mexican near Bergamot: Juquila, Tacomiendo or Monte Alban?

have to disagree with Ciao Bob on this one, i havent been in a few months, but ive often got a couple tacos at Tacomiendo(carnitas) and they were the same thickish, def home made tortillas as come wrapped in tin foil with dinners...
