Grimaldi's Pizza in El Segundo Review:

even granting some inconsistency and slightly sweetened sauce, Grimaldi's is not to be confused with DiGiorno or any other NY style pizza west of Hudson River!

Pizzafreak, thanks for clarifying the somewhat convoluted Grimaldi's saga..their legal battle over the name preceded the present Patsy Grimaldi status!

Grimaldi's Pizza in El Segundo Review:

If youre not in the mood for a Neapolitan style pizza, id love to know many names of pizzerias better than Grimaldi's...maybe ive had particularly good luck but today's crust was solid...oh well...

Grimaldi's Pizza in El Segundo Review:

Mr Taster, agree about the "ambiance" at Grimaldi's...but also something i can live with, like the slightly sweet sauce, considering that i really dig the very rare old school, NY style crust.

Grimaldi's Pizza in El Segundo Review:

the Del Rey pizza didnt do anything for me...I shared an excellent pie at Grimaldi's again today...theyve been inconsistent with the amount of sauce on each pie...less today than last visit...i didnt find the sweetness at all disturbing and ive certainly tasted too sweet pizza sauce...the crust today was again, well worth the price of admission. no crust like it in the LA area as far as im aware of...so its a rare treat....That said, if i still lived in MDR id spend most pizza nights at South End or Settebello.

Is the low carb, no gluten trend hurting pizza, pasta & bread sales?

thank god!

Grimaldi's Pizza in El Segundo Review:

Westsidegal, agree about the sauce but i dig the crust as a different option out here that i overlook the sweetness of the sauce...Ive been back to South End in Marina del Rey...excellent pizza(Mozza like, former Mozzer, Frank Fermin majority owner) and wine selection!

Twain Harte: The Prospector - VPN Certified Napoletana Pizza by the pizza perfectionist?

Just wanted to revive this thread as Im hoping to be up in the Gold Country in a couple weeks...The Prospector is a one of a kind culinary experience. Yes, the pizzas are great(VPN trained and certified) Robert Martin makes great home made pastas...I had the gnocchi last time i was there...perfectly made...ive had a half dozen different pies, excellent vino, He even made me a dessert pizza once...yummy! and i happened to be there to experience his "quirkiness," too...there is a rule limiting the # of people at a table?party(either 5 or 6, i think)...a group of 8 or so came in and he would not relax the rule...i loved every minute of it...if you find various rules annoying or think that makes him a jerk, Im quite certain Robert wont miss you...Ive found him to be extremely friendly and willing to talk about anything...just dont show up with a party of 8 or ask for substitutions!

The Prospector Twain Harte

Love to hear about your excellent experience at The Prospector! It might've been my review you read...I raved about the pizza, in particular, and the VPN pizza pedigree. Robert Martin is one of the most dedicated human beings Ive ever had the pleasure of meeting...and his pizzas, home made pizzas, home cured meats and fresh mozz are superb. My only compaint is that I cant get to Twain Harte more often!

Vito's -- it's perfect!

agreed! Vito's is excellent NY style pizza...i do like the white pizza...nice and garlicky! excellent crusts...usually, even reheated slices are way better than any other slice in LA! i will say that the first couple years that Joe's was open here, it was as good, but no more!

Cora's Coffee Shop

At first, Piccolo Ritrovo, which had its first branch on Sunset in the Palisades, replaced San Gennaro...they have a great Napoli oven and were ttrained to make pizza by Peppe Miele/VPN but quickly became inconsistent...not sure why but owner sold the Barrington Place branch...its now called Piccolo Verde and i was told they dont know how to use the pizza oven properly...sad waste!

Really good beef chow fun?

I have rarely had the wider, traditional chow fun noodle in LA but found it at Tampa Garden in Northridge...ive had roast pork chow fun and love it...other pasta dishes are hand made, as in dumplings, etc...just be forewarned service can be spotty...friendly family run but id suggest not waiting for a wait person to come to you but walk up to the counter instead!

Grimaldi's in El Segun, it looks like it's open now ? Customers sitting outside, waiting carrying pizzas out, looks pretty open to me, when I drove by earlier.

LA Pizza: Grimaldi's Finally Open

the margherita looked pretty damn good, too. As for "char,"the mgr claimed they cook it till theres some char as theyre known for...he said some people prefer it lighter and ask for it that way...our waiter said if its not right, they'll fix it!

LA Pizza: Grimaldi's Finally Open

Well, it took a while to get there and, once there, several elements almost turned me around, but Im glad I hung in there...First, my fault...i turned the wrong way on to Rosecrans from the 405. even though i knew i wasnt heading towards the beach, the street numbers were headin in the right direction so i kept going...ok, so then we turned around and saw it right in the heart of a business park(is that what ya call it?), no street parking, only structure parking but we got lucky...then walking through a maze to get to the pizzeria...everything i dislike about California. once we entered it was huge and packed...seemed like everyone in the complex was having lunch there...which is good but there was a 30 minute wait...again, Lady Luck intervened and we grabbed 2 seats at the bar....while we waited i walked around and scoped out the pies...some looked real good...nice puffy, slightly charred crust and cornicione. Others looked on the pale side and very flat...I actually feared the crusts would be crackery and too thin...i explained, perhaps over dramatically to the mgr that i didnt want an under cooked pie and i thought he was gonna smack me...he said sometimes they cook it less if someone asks...fair enough...OK, cut to the chase...i have to happily admit that it was the best NY style pizza in LA! thin crust, nicely charred and with a nice chew! not crackery at all....very good sauseeege, in chunks not the pathetic slices that Joe's uses. as an aside, Joe's on Bway in SM was the best when they first opened but has since gone way down hill. nice fruity sauce with none of the common over oreganoed flavor...and very tasty mozz....thats all i got folks...by 1:30pm it had emptied out enough to be comfortable, which is when i will go the next time i feel like havin a great NY style pie! sorry for the lousy foto..too crowded and i didnt feel like movin around.
