168 Sushi, Vaughan location
I've been there twice. Do yourself a favour and save your money. Don't go. While the restaurant is beautiful to look at, the sushi is horrid. Too much rice and not enough flavour. The handrolls are chewy and rubbery and everything else seems just below average. They have a buffet there with lunch/dinner that's laughable. The food isn't too bad but the sushi is just not worth the higher than average price they charge. If you want to go somewhere very very good in that area, go to Yoshiko on Bathurst one block north of Steeles on the east side. This place has got to be the best ayce sushi to come down the pike in a long time. The fish is the freshest and the sushi chef is just amazing. The food is also first rate and right now, not too many people know about it so you get the benefit of not having to wait in line because it's a small place. The staff are awesome attentive and helpful. Try this place, but don't tell anyone how fab it is..................hehehe.
Yoshiko Sushi
New sushi place openned in Thornhill near my place on Bathurst just north of Steeles beside What-a-Bagel. It's an ayce joint and really really good in my humble opinion. Freshest of fish and the hand rolls are nicely crunchy as I think they should be. They also do a great spicy salmon with the salmon chopped up and blended with their spicy sauce rather than just a piece of salmon with spicy sauce squeezed over it. I hate the lazy way!! This place is empty most of the time which I think has to do with how far back from the street they are. I suggested to the owner to put a sign out by Bathurst street because of the high traffic going by and he did. I hope it works. The sushi here is good quality. They don't drown them in rice and the menu has lots of variety.
I would hate to see this place not do well cause we really don't have a good ayce in the immediate neighbourhood. If anyone is around here, please check it out. I think you'll really like it. Oh, and the service is awesome. Not just cause there's not many people there but the girls are sweet and informative.
Downsview Flea Market big surprise
Was at the flea market today and had lunch in the international food court. I checked out the Mexican food stand there and had the best burrito I've ever tasted here or south of the 49th. What a pleasant surprise. The tortrilla was homemade, thin, soft and so fulla flavour. The beef inside was spiced perfect along with a generous helping of whizzed black beans, lettuce, and Mexican cheese. Guacamole, a blend of parsley and onion and a mix of spicy sauce all came together for an awesome buritto. Next time, I'm in for a large!!! Definately worth the trip to the market.
AYCE Ginza Thornhill
Well, I went today to try it. Very busy at 12:30. Was pretty good. The sushi rolls were comparable to most ayce sushi places. Fresh, diverse, nothing out of the ordinary. I did have a really nice red curry chicken in a fancy shmancy bowl with a side of rice that was very good. Really liked the salmon sushi pizza with the finely diced veg and a sweet sauce. What really knocked my socks off though was that they included ayce salmon sashimi in the lunch. I loved not having to order salmon sushi and get full off the rice. They'll see me there again.
AYCE Ginza Thornhill
I saw an ad in the Thornhill Post from Ginza Sushi that they now have ayce lunch for $12.99. Anyone tried it? I hear the regular menu for Ginza is very good.

Taka Sushi
I ventured over there yesterday and tried it for lunch. Pretty good. Fresh, diverse and the handrolls were just the way I like them; not too packed with rice and crispy nouri. Dinner is on sale right now for $15.99. I was there for lunch and it was $10.99.
Like Arnold said........"I'll be back."
Restaurants around Yonge and Finch area
+1 for food court at Galleria. My son and I will pop in and have a quick lunch of sushi or one of the many delicious soups/hot pots or combo dishes. Great price and even greater taste. Good shopping in there too.
Taka Sushi
Driving to Yorkdale yesterday, I noticed a sign for Taka Sushi at the plaza just south of Finch on Allen Rd by Canadian Tire. It's an ayce place. Was wondering if anyone has had the chance to try it yet.

Restaurant recommendations on Mercer St.
I was checking out the menu for Victor. Looks a bit pretentious for my 'lowbrow' tastes.

I was looking at Milagro but they're only open until 9:30p tomorrow and I'm meeting my cousin at 8pm.
Restaurant recommendations on Mercer St.
I'm meeting my cousin from Greece, who's here for TIFF, for dinner tomorrow night. She's staying at the LeGermain Hotel on Mercer St in the entertainment district. I want to taker her out for dinner around the hotel but I'm a humble suburbanite and don't know what's good within walking distance. Any suggestions? Nothing too formal, something relaxed but good.
CRYSTAL HOT SAUCE / CAJUN PRODUCTS in the GTA?
We love Crystal hot sauce. It's a fave in this house and I've tried for years to find some in Toronto. I've been unsuccessful so far but I am gonna check out Amazon and Ebay. Usually, I go away every winter and I bring home a few bottles to last till the next trip.
Searching for Tam Tam Crackers...
No Frills at Center and Bathurst in Thornhill have them on right now for $.90 a box from Passover.
where to buy brisket
Believe it or not, I picked up a wonderful brisket at No Frills Centerpoint mall not long ago. It's your basic AA grade and there was no difference in price between the point or the double 'brust' which my mother used to call it. $3.99lb. I'm pretty sure that's regular price. I got a big one and cut it into two. Made the 2nd one last night and it came out great as usual. Mind you, I know how to make a brisket but it helps when you start with a good quality one.
Need dinner suggestions.
I'm in desperate need of suggestions for new things to make for dinner for my picky pampered family. I'm comming to my wits end and very soon I will just cook for me and they can do for themselves. I know there's a ton of recepies to make in this world but lucky me, I have one that doesn't eat any veggies except corn, potatos and sometimes rice. The other one is ok with veggies but won't touch pork and mostly prefers chicken. Oh, and first one is getting sick of chicken.
Help save two people from starvation due to the cook going on strike!!!
Spicy salmon sushi
This is my very favorite sushi and I try many different places in search of the best. I wish I could make some at home and save myself a ton of money. I've tried looking up recepies on the internet but really haven't seen any that sound like I would enjoy them. What I really need to know is what spicy ingredient gives them the taste that I crave so much.
Any budding sushi chefs out there that can help me?
Loblaw's new bakery (VP/Gerrard)
I used to love going to the Loblaws at Bayview and 7, where my fave sushi place is, but sadly the change in the bakery has priced me out. It's very expensive now for the 'good' stuff that's all natural. I appreciate the sentiment but I used to love when they reduced their fancy-shmancy cheesecakes and other fine cakes and I would load up my freezer with them. Those La Rocca's were perfect for freezing. They don't have them anymore. Just their own stuff at the same price but they don't reduce them the day before expiry. My loss.
For St. Paddy's Day
I found a homemade steak and kidney pie at the farmer's market on Yonge St. in Thornhill. It's made by Stuart Carroll. I think the reason my Irish husband wanted this was because his English mother used to make it all the time for his Irish father.
For St. Paddy's Day
My Mr. O'Brien wants steak and kidney pie tomorrow, along with the required beer of course. Where can I find some relatively authentic ones in North York/Vaughan?
Thornhill Middle Eastern
+1 for Sababa. And like topbanana said, the food is pretty standard but service will seperate the men from the boys.
Best AYCE Sushi in Richmond Hill / Thornhill?
I have to give a +1 for Maki. I like Hockey Sushi too but I don't like their spicy salmon which is my fave sushi. Right now, I'm having a love affair with Akabane on Bayview at High Tech Rd. Really good and fresh and great variety. Service is awesome and the prices are comparable. If you go, try the deep fried corn cakes.
ANYTHING even remotely good in the Finch/Steeles - 400/Weston Road quadrant?
If you venture up a bit to Finch and Keele, on the SE corner at the bottom of the office building is an ayce sushi place called Oishe. I think it's pretty good. They have a buffet with crab legs and shrimp dishes as well as all the standard Chinese fare. Good price too. $10.99. Can't really go wrong.
Best All You Can Eat Japanese in Toronto GTA
@Diehard - Akabane is in a plaza. I doubt it was Outback before.
@Jent - They don't have special Sunday brunch menu. I didn't see the salmon rose on the menu for lunch.
Best All You Can Eat Japanese in Toronto GTA
Right now, I'm enjoying a new sushi place on Bayview at High Tech Rd. Akabane and it's pretty good. Lunch is $9.99 for cash and the food is amazing quality with tons of variety. I really like their deep fried corn cakes with a creamy corn center that's to die for. They fish is very fresh and my fave is the spicy salmon sushi. I think it's worth a look-see if you like ayce.
Yonge & Finch / North York Bakeries?
Just a couple blocks north of Steeles on the east side of Yonge st. is Nino Daversa Italian Bakery. Excellent pasteries and breads and has a hot table with awesome Italian food. At Bathurst and Steeles there's a couple of bakeries. Kiva's and Steeles Bakery in the Price Chopper plaza. Also very good.
