I'd do Violet Hour earlier, on a non-weekend night, to avoid waiting in line.

Craving a lobster roll uptown to mark the beginning of being stuck in the city for the summer!
Definitely Luke's Lobster.

Definitely don't miss a plate lunch at Local Food in Lahaina.
Great Food near Ground Zero
Near the 9/11 Memorial there isn't much. You'll have to walk a little.
Personally, I would do North End Grill. Maybe Blue Smoke for something a bit more casual, and not easily found in Toronto, I think.
13 is a pretty big group for Manhattan. You can do somewhat upscale but I'd probably not do too upscale, due to the kids in the group.
short notice trip for san francisco fooders
Pearl Oyster Bar is on vacation until Tuesday dinner, BTW.
You have lots of good options within a 20 min walk::
Dell'anima or L'Artusi - both take reservations as well as walk ins but also L'Artusi is bigger and has two long counters for walk ins, serves brunch and dinner
Spotted Pig - no reservations, open for lunch, brunch and dinner
Tertulia - no reservations, open for lunch, brunch, and dinner
Wong (closed Sundays though) - on OpenTable, dinner only
Fatty Cue - on OpenTable, brunch, lunch, and dinner
Takashi - takes reservations on their web site, dinner only
Joseph Leonard - no reservations, breakfast, lunch, and dinner, owned by the same man who also does Fedora, Perla, Jeffrey's
Ino - great especially for breakfast
Scarpetta - dinner only, on OpenTable, great Italian
Minetta Tavern - especially good for late night dining at the bar
Buvette - breakfast
Babbo - lunch Tues-Sat, for dinner you could show up before it opens to try to get a walk in table, or monitor their Twitter feed for cancellations
RedFarm is good but more like creative Chinese American food. Excellent but not pan-Asian like Wong.
A lot of places will probably doing weekend brunch on Monday.

East Coast Canadians Visiting NYC May 26 - 30 NEED HELP!
Hard to say as it is a holiday weekend but for some reason the city didn't empty out quite as much as some people predicted.
Upcoming NYC Trip
There's a group meal with the duck and there's an individually sized portion that they only serve at lunch.
You can try the all duck menu at Momofuku Ssam for weekday lunch, or have it for weekend lunch, when the menu is a mix of dinner items and duck items.
They don't take reservations except for the big group meal.
However, lunch is much less crowded than dinner, so it probably won't matter in your case, since you want the duck.
What to eat at Recette (New Menu??)??
I believe their menu is seasonal and changes often.
6-8 dishes is way too many. The menu is listed in order of light dishes to heavy dishes. I would only order 5 dishes or so including dessert. You'll probably need your server's help gauging size as it can vary.

Last Minute Anniversary Trip to NYC
Right, forgot about that. Babbo are now on OpenTable for not for parties of only 2.
Last Minute Anniversary Trip to NYC
How long are you in town for? Friday morning? Afternoon? Evening? through Sunday morning/afternoon/evening?
Your biggest issue will be Saturday night, likely. I would not set my hopes on going to a 4 NYT star experience given that you are planning so late. Requiring "amazing, thought provoking, innovative food" + ability to still make a reservation 1 week in advance is going to be tough. The "hype" machine gets started pretty early here in NYC (before some restaurants even open). How about settling for just delicious? :)
On OpenTable.com, searching for June 2, I see primetime (7-8pm) tables still available at:
15 East
Ai Fiori
Aldea
Jung Sik
Junoon
The Modern - Bar Room
Oceana
Acme has early tables, as does Empellon Cocina, and many more places have later tables (9pm or 10pm) such as Corton, etc.
Are you willing to wait for a table? The more flexible you can be, the more likely you are to get into the spots you want to dine at. Especially for restaurants where you can potentially grab seats at the bar or at tables reserved for walk-ins.
http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/833617
Also you can dine without a reservation at the Salon at Per Se (a la carte menu with coffee table seating), the bar at Le Bernardin (full menu), the bar at Del Posto (full menu, I would call to confirm DP is still doing this), the Lounge at Daniel (full menu), the bar and lounge tables at Eleven Madison Park (a la carte only).
Note also that Babbo serves lunch now Tuesday through Saturday and they are not on OpenTable; you must call to make a reservation. You might be able to squeeze it in dependent when you arrive on Friday.
Good Bar with Craft Beer and Good Food to Watch the Ranger Game Tonight
Is BeerParc still operational, since FoodParc closed?
Upcoming NYC Trip
I haven't been to Salinas but the suckling pig at Txikito is excellent. They also have suckling pig on the menu at the NoMad.
One night
Personally, I'd choose somewhere like Minetta Tavern or Momofuku Ssam Bar.
Of the two you have, Balthazar, due to atmosphere.
But if you only have one night in town, I'd look for something really "New York"-y.
Meat curing salt
Yes.
Kalustyan's
123 Lexington Ave
(between 28th St & 29th St)
New York, NY 10016
The Meadow
523 Hudson St
(between 10th St & Charles St)
New York, NY 10014
Recette - Charming, Delicious, Excellent All-Around
They can tailor the chef's tasting menu to whatever dishes catch your eye on the menu.
Best Steak Tartare in city
Have you tried the one at Takashi? It is very close to the style you describe above. Short strips of meat.
Best Steak Tartare in city
http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/763173
I really enjoy Takashi's, which is thinly-sliced chuck-eye tartare in a sauce topped with a raw quail egg yolk, Japanese seaweed, lemon, sesame seeds.
Meat curing salt
The Meadow also carries curing salt:
http://www.atthemeadow.com/shop/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1_91
It's more expensive than Kalustyan's but they have different sizes. Taster: 1.1 oz.:Small: 1.8 oz.; Medium: 6.0 oz.; Large: 9.0 oz. Small Bag: 7.8 oz.; Large Bag: 32 oz.
Kalustyan's has Pink Curing Salt (Prague Powder#1 / Insta Cure#1) in 3 and 14 oz bags.

One day in Manhattan - HELP!
Near Grand Central, The NYPL branch on 42nd St, and Central Park aren't exactly havens for food trucks and NYC staples. You can definitely eat well around there but not for the NYC classics you're looking for or food trucks. There are a few food trucks in Central Park in the old Tavern on the Green space, but they are getting pushed out soon due to construction. A lot of the trucks in Midtown take the weekends off because their primary audience is office workers.
I would recommend you starting your day downtown with pastrami sandwiches and smoked salmon on a bagel. Katz's is open 24 hours on Saturday and Russ & Daughters opens at 9am. If you're still hungry, you can check out the food stalls at Hester St Fair.
If you start early, you can take the train up to midtown to see the NYPL, Grand Central, and catch your play.
After dinner, I'd do maybe a Central Park picnic for an early dinner. If you want to do a Central Park picnic, I would pick up supplies at Jacques Torres, Salumeria Rosi, and Epicure Boulud.
Hopefully it won't be raining. If it is, I'd probably head downtown again and have pizza somewhere, likely Motorino.
Craft or Ciano --- Balthazar or DBGB
At Craft, try the crispy bacon, the sweetbreads, the roasted scallops, the short ribs, roasted mushroom medley (off menu), potato gratin, or any of the pastas.
Nutella from Italy
A while ago, I noticed they were hawking "their" version of Nutella, specially made for them. So I'm not sure if that is what the OP is looking for...
Mission Chinese Food
Actually I just read in the New York Times they will take reservations... for the bar seating only. Interesting. We actually prefer eating at the bar sometimes, so this is good news for us.
"Unlike most restaurants, it will take its day off on Wednesday; it will accept reservations for 12 seats at the bar, but not for tables in the tiny restaurant; and 75 cents from each entree will be donated to the Food Bank for New York City. Once the restaurant receives approval to sell spirits, 75 cents from each cocktail will go to a different charity. "
First date (technically, 1.5, I guess) recommendations please! Great food + beer options!
Standard Biergarden is definitely the opposite of date-y. I would describe it as more "bro"-y if you will. However, I find you need to shout to hear the person you're sitting next to.
Maybe Landbrot might work.
First date (technically, 1.5, I guess) recommendations please! Great food + beer options!
I found Recette to be incredibly cramped because of the table they gave us. They had to pull the table out all the way for both of us to get in. Once we were seated, and the table was pushed back in, my husband could not move his chair a single inch in either direction. We were then forced to eavesdrop on the couple next to us.
It's the 2 top in the center of this photo, backed against the wall, in that awkward corner:
http://media.timeout.com/images/resizeBestFit/100327403/660/370/image.jpg
This photo is actually old -- the tables against the window are now banquette seating, as are the three tables against the wall on the left.
Last Minute, Large Group Ideas
I see at 6pm table on OpenTable for L'Artusi, which is very good, are you willing to eat a little earlier?
Perla only takes reservations for parties of 4 or more. They were recently reviewed in the New York Times, though, and might be fully booked.
Tertulia does not take reservations for dinner, except for groups of 6-12 people, up to two weeks in advance to the date. It would be worth asking if they have availability this coming Friday, you might get lucky.
Blue Ribbon Bakery and Blue Ribbon Brasserie only takes reservations for parties of 5 or more. Bakery is larger than Brasserie and is easier to get into.
Fedora only takes same-day reservations.
Empellon Taqueria might work -- it is pretty spacious for a West Village restaurant. I only see 5pm and 10pm on OpenTable, though.
Takashi might work but their site indicates they are fully booked until 10pm.
I'd also give Wong a call, but you might have to do their Duckavore prix fixe with such a large group.
Father's Day Brunch Ideas
I don't know if you can make a reservation for weekend brunch at Sarabeth's CPS if you want a "normal" time. I would give them a call.
On OpenTable, they only have the very early and very late times for weekend brunch available.
How about Untitled, Danny Meyer's restaurant at the Whitney on the UES? A short walk from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Father's Day Brunch Ideas
Clinton St doesn't do parties greater than six during brunch service.
To avoid a wait, I'd arrive at 8:15am or so, as they open at 9am. Otherwise the wait will probably be about 2 hours later on in the day.
Wowing visiting friends near Battery Park/ Wall St.
Dependent upon where you are, you can kinda see a little bit of NJ peeking out over the Irish Hunger Memorial. But that's about it.
