Olive Chicken - Calgary

my cousin went here on saturday and told me the korean chicken was pretty good (and authentic). she only ordered the 영념통닭 (direct translation: flavoured chicken in a box). it's essentially deep fried chicken covered with a sweet and spicy sauce. i plan on trying it tomorrow so i'll report then.

Best restaurant lunch menu in Calgary right now?

if price is an issue, i recently went to Q Haute (the old la caille) and had their $15 express lunch. for $15, you get a starter (soup or salad) and a lunch entree. i had their caesar and their mushroom risotto (with a pretty generous sprinkle of truffle oil) and had to say it was excellent value for what you get. it's a bit out of the way if you're looking for a lunch right in the core area but it's probably not that much further than river cafe (btw i absolutely adore river cafe). the drinks are a bit on the expensive side though... my lunch companions had a $13 la chouffe and a $14 glass of house wine and my grey goose high ball was probably $8. good luck!

Has anyone try Amandine Bakery & Pastry (Calgary)?

my son recently turned 4 and we bought a hot wheels replica cake from amandine. my wife took a hot wheels car (big fat buster, for those of you familiar with battle force 5 (sigh)) and the cake turned out amazing. the cake also tasted great. people were so impressed that the next birthday (two weeks later) we went to also had their birthday cake made from amandine (this time a space shuttle). the cake is not overly sweet, which seemed to appeal to most people. hope it works out for you.

Downtown Calgary Business Supper for 15

Centini used to be one of my favourite places to dine but the last two times I've been there, I or someone in my party found their food incredibly salty. Perhaps off days but still disappointing. I do agree though, the service here is great but I've heard their maitre d (who always was extremely friendly and personable) is no longer there.

There are a lot of downtown restaurants that cater to large business functions and I would heartily endorse all of the ones that have been listed here.

Weekend in Canmore

I was at the Grizzly Paw about two weeks ago after doing some trail riding with some friends. 5 of us ending up having burgers, with the sixth member of our party having their pulled pork sandwich. The burgers were good but their fries were a bit of a turn-off; the fries tasted a bit fishy. We also shared their tenderloin wrapped bacon as an appy - delicious! Some excellent microbrews as well.

Thumbs-up as well to the Rock Mtn Flatbread - great place to take kids. Over-all, lots of great culinary choices in Canmore!

spinach fettucini in Calgary?

Hi all,
My daughter is having a craving for good spinach fettucini. We've had it before at Fiore but I was wondering if there were any other places out there that served good handmade spinach fettucini.
Thanks in advance!

Have you tried Midori lately? (Cgy)

We were just at Midori this past Saturday with three kids in tow (apologies for the patrons that were there at the same time as we were). It's been a few months since we had gone to Midori due to the arrival of our newborn but prior to that, we were regulars there. The actual menu itself was unchanged when we had gone but I noticed that there were pictures of new rolls on the wall. I agree with you John - the sushi (and food in general) is very good but not top notch but you cannot beat Midori for value. Their rolls are solid, we love their tempura, and I'm a big fan of their vegetable bibimbap.

Help! Looking for good family restaurant by west Ed mall

Hi!
We are in Edmonton (specifically by west Edmonton mall) and are looking for a good restaurant tonight. Catch - my wife and I have a five year old, a three year old and an infant with us (doh). Any recommendations for this misplaced calgarian?
Thanks!

rolls at fairmont hotels

my wife and i were fortunate enough to spend a night at the fairmont hotel in banff (without the kids in tow!) this past weekend and during our dinner function, i once again realized that the rolls at fairmont hotels were top notch! i remember thinking the same thing at a lunch function held at the palliser a couple of years ago. this seems like a bizarre question but does anyone know if you can purchase rolls at any of the fairmont hotels?

best pizza in calgary?

hi fotze

yes it's at the deli area on the south end of the store and it's cooked to order (although they do appear to sell pre-made by the slice). you order right where the wood oven is located. there's a piece of paper that they hand you for you to specify what toppings you want. i think it was $10.99 for 2 toppings $11.99 for 3 toppings and an additional $1 for any additional toppings. we had to wait 15 minutes for the pizza to be finished.

best pizza in calgary?

thanks for the suggestion john! i tried their pizza on sunday and it was quite tasty. we had 4 toppings and it came out to $13 or $14... the pizza fed two adults and two kids so decent value. the ingredients were fresh and they didn't skimp. it takes 15 minutes from order to finish.

Office Christmas lunch recommendations in Calgary?

thanks!! just checked out rush's menu and you're right, it's definitely reasonable for lunch. much appreciated for the recommendation... now it's just a matter of them being able to accomodate us... their enroute kudos may make reservations now difficult.

Southern Style Fried Chicken in Calgary

finally went to check out red tree in kensington in search of some fried chicken and it's now closed at that location, with a for lease sign on the window. oh well, went to peppino's as a consolation and picked up some delicious gorgonzola alfredo sauce.

Office Christmas lunch recommendations in Calgary?

Hi all,
Much thanks for the recommendations! Teatro and Centini are probably a bit too expensive for us but I'll definitely contemplate the other recommendations.

Office Christmas lunch recommendations in Calgary?

Hi!

I'm a long-time lurker and recent subscriber. Firstly just want to say thanks for all of the great posts that everyone contributes here!

Question: My group consists of 18 people in total and every year it's a struggle to find a venue for a Christmas lunch. Last year we went to Bonterra. Anyone have any recommendations on a venue which can accomodate a large group? The venue can be downtown or outside of downtown (but not too far from downtown). I would prefer somewhere nice but not too expensive.

Thanks!!

Slider buns in Calgary?

you can get butter pan buns from safeway which resemble white castle sliders.

Matsarang House Calgary is no more

Sadly the owners are contemplating a move back to Korea. An Ju and Matsarang may both be korean restaurants but are very different from one another.

Where to buy sesame balls in YYC?

Hi Jasz

You can find them at Logos bakery. Logos is located in the New Asia shopping complex on 16th Ave and Centre Street NW (the same complex that Tops Supermarket and Central Grand restaurant are located). They're delicious there!
