JOE'S DAIRY CLOSED for retail.

I live on that block[for 35 years],and always loved the smell of smoked mozz drifting up into my apartment....But,fact is, the transient local yuppies and students whose parents pay their rent for overpriced tenements don't cook at home that much. The cooking smells that drifted through our hallways are Gone, except for the restaurant fry-o-laters.The other sad truth is that excepting the basic mozz. product, the turnover of refrigerated product was slow, and their other cheeses weren't in good condition,...what next?macaroons?Nail salons?

ISO excellent non-chain ice cream, anywhere in Westchester

Try the gelato at Tarry Market.

Best Pasta Dish of 2012

OK,so it's a small meal, but the buttermilk pappardelle with smoked goat at Fatty Cue is one of the most delicious pastas that I've had,ever...order 2.

Joe Bastianich's book: Restaurant Man

Oh phooey,I've worked in restaurants for years, and save cussing for really effective moments.Constant f-ing makes people sound dumber than they really are,as it does in this interesting, but often spiteful, book.

Your Signature Dish Sucks

Yeah...I get tired of assistants who can't follow simple recipes, and whom I can't persuade to the [free] library and check out a few cookbooks giving me bright ideas about my menus. On the other hand,I don't know what to tall them about trying to keep a roof over their heads at a job that will top off at $13.00 an hour[if they are lucky],in New York City.Forget about paying off their student loans if they attended an expensive culinary school.

Where has all the Fresh Fish Gone?

Randazzo's is heaven,if you love a good variety of fish.Fish vendors at the greenmarkets and the Lobster Place at Chelsea Mkt. are other options.

Gem Cuisines of China, former Hunan Village in Yonkers... Paul is Back!

Wow you all were lucky.Shared a meal with 3 people yesterday, and with the exception of the chicken with vinegar, this was on overpriced,lo-fan meal.Gloppy sauces, stingy portions, and amateurish service. We felt robbed, and will never set foot in this place again.

Spiga (Central Ave Scarsdale)... did it close?

My last visit to Spiga a few years back was so horrid that I wrote them a letter about it...Huge servings of insultingly bad Italian food .

Johnny Iuzzini is leaving Jean Georges

He's lucky enough to have made extra cash doing tv shows, and celebrity demos. The situation of reaching the salary cap and nowhere to go unless you are crazy enough to open a dessert retail business is not uncommon...

Nice Surprise at Morandi New York

The food at Morandi is often underestimated. The supply of loudmouthed 20-30 somethings at Manhattan restaurants seems to be unlimited.

Fig and Olive opening in Scarsdale!

Depends on your level of sophistication about food....the whole olive oil presentation thing was silly,'cause they weren't anything that special, and the prices were Steep, for ok food. The waitstaff were nice, but didn't know all that much...eh...

Does anyone remember La Focacceria on 1st Avenue?

Remembered, but long gone...my first vastedi experience was at that shop.Things change, but Bar Veloce on 1st Ave. near 7th St. makes a very good sfincione, the only place that serves it.[in Manhattan,anyhow...]

Baccala

I love well made baccala mantecato[the Italian version of brandade]...more olive oil,no cream. The best versions, for my taste, are at Hearth/Terrior and AlDiLa.It's not easy to find good dried baccala, and some restaurants salt their own codfish.

yatagan shut down, any good alternatives?

Oof,that closure was well deserved,it went way downhill,in many ways, over the past ten years...What kind of sheep has a leg that huge?Sadly though,I can't offer a decent substitute, downtown anyhows....

Best olive oil to buy in Manhattan?

Two olive oils that I like a lot are Trapittu, from Trapani, sold at Eataly, and Corte Olias, from Sardinia, available at Fairway. Both have a strong round 'green' flavor, but are not peppery.

Knuckleheads Tavern in Pelham

Funny how we see things....and no,I've never been there.Every time that I've waited at the traffic light on Route 1,I think,'that looks like a place for serious drinking up the Friday paycheck for people working in the small factories in the area, and not much else'.

Pepe's Pizza Yonkers Location

I gave this place a try yesterday, and see no need to return. The white clam pie was watery, with tasteless canned clams and no other ingredients on the pie to redeem it.Sausage pie was good for the slices of fennel sausage and little else. The crust was nothing special to me...So far,Tarry Lodge rates as the best pizza in Westchester, and Keste in Manhattan is my numero uno.

Best Italian for my NY Foodie trip

Personal favorites;Al Di La,I Sodi,Hearth,Lupa and Gottino for Italian wine bar bites

Dinner/Breakfast in Saratoga Springs

Mrs. London's has some of the best French/American pastries that I've tasted anywhere in New York state-if that's your style for breakfast, don't pass them by.

Keste or Motorino for special dinner (Grom for Gelato)

Hello there,it's Meredith...The term gelato can mean any frozen ,aerated ice cream,in Italian....as far as I know there is no official 'gelato board' that defines butterfat limits for gelato in the U.S.There is a lot of discrepancy in what the butterfat content should be.When I learned gelato making in Italy,I was given 12%-22% as the window.I stay within that window and I make what I make;love it or don't....

Jamba Juice coming to Bronxville

Another mediocre chain store[sigh]...who else can afford to take on the rent anymore.I'm not going there...

The Cookery in Dobbs Ferry

I dined there recently, and was happy to enjoy good greenmarket driven Italian food prepared by a talented chef in this neck of the woods. The menu is ambitious, the wine list well priced. My Guess is that they took over a relatively inexpensive space as was/is-not an ideal room;noisy, not much parking, and please lose the tv sets...but the chef is talented, and maybe it'll be a good stepping stone for him, hopefully remaining in lower Westchester which is starved for dining options like this.

Fleetwood News

The problem for any small business opening on the main streets of Fleetwood is parking.People don't seem to want to park in that nasty, dark public lot...and that cigar store...?I'm convinced that anyone opening a store like this is[1]totally clueless[2]a front or money laundering operation.Yoshino?IMHO,do not trust any restaurant using the term 'Asian Fusion'..
