Brief Lockhart Smokehouse report
I had Lockhart's beef ribs two days after Christmas and my beef rib was amazing. Wednesday is beef rib day at Lockhart's. I promised if you would have told the owner or Will the pit master (big red beard) they would have made it right.
I've been there about four times in the last year and haven't had a bad experience yet, not to mention they are overly friendly. I will say that I get there right at 11:00 to avoid the lunch rush so they take time to talk and help you figure out exactly what you want. I've not been ther at a busy time of day so I don't know what that is like.
Can't go wrong with the jalapeno sausage or brisket either.
Need help narrowing down favorite Dallas steakhouse
I know you said you didn't want a chain; but I think it's hard to be Texas De Brazil especially for sides and salad. Plus it's just fun to try a little bit of everything.

Trader Joe's in Dallas?
Sorry but I'm ignorant about Trader Joes besides knowing it's "cool, hip and from California" could you compare it to anything in the area? Is it like Central Market? Is it a huge grocery store or a smaller one like a Tom Thumb, etc? Great produce, meats, seafood, etc? What's it's specialty??
Parentt's Dinner Suggestions
Need a few suggestions for dinner for the parents tomorrow night. Just to give you an idea, probably looking at mexican, american, steak or italian food. (Not asian)
$20 or less (my parents wouldn't want to spend or have more than that spent on them) and they love veggies.
My first thought was maybe Celebration on Mockingbird,
Food recs driving from Dallas to Gulf Shores
Another thumbs up from me for Old Time Grocery; great po boys.
The Shed BBQ (the original) in www.theshedbbq.com is also great.
In-N-Out Burger
Your going to drive past 20 great local Dallas Burger joints to go get In and Out. If your just and In and Out fanatic that makes sense; if not then I'd hit one of our many other options.
In-N-Out Burger
Drove by the Allen location around noon on Saturday and the line was out the door and looked like about 20 people standing outside. Cars were wrapped through the parking lot as well. I would say if you go at "down times" you would have a decent shot; otherwise I'm betting still a 45 minute wait at least from the time you get in line until you get your food.
In n Out Burger News Clip from Channel 8
Have to be honest, I have had it once on a trip to Vegas and I wasn't that impressed; then again that was in my youth and I was an idiiot back then. We will see I am looking forward to giving it another chance. I liek the idea of not freezing anything, and no additives, I think that right there is great advertising moving forward. I also like the simplicity of their menu.
I am a Whataburger fan I think they do a good job, I've never been impressed with their fries though.

What do I serve for dinner tonight after serious dental surgery?
Keep it simple. He probably isn't going to want to eat anything. I might offer up a quality milkshake or some some soup.
Don't see him chowing down on real food though.
Hillcountry Style BBQ in Dallas area
Meshaks is good, but not hill country style for sure. It's close to my house so it's my favorite.
I've had Hard Eight, wasn't that impressed, but I like their location and set up. I hear NOTHING good about Coopers.
Best Oyster Po Boy
This is where we buy our crawfish to boil and their shrimp po boy is unreal. Kitchen is open you can stand there and watch them cook it fresh after you order it. highly recommended
Fuzzy's
I've eaten at the Richardson location a couple times now. I will say their tacos are pretty good. $2 a taco, I've had most of the versions. If you want the most meat go with the shredded beef or pork. Fish and shrimp didn't impress me that much. All tacos are good size because they are covered with a handful of lettuce, tomato and cilantro. Over all pretty good fare.
I had their enchiladas and I thought they were okay, sides are good. Really like the fried potatoes and their nachos look really good. Best looking thing I have seen so far though is the sandwiches; I need to get back and have one of those.
Rusty Taco -- 38 minutes for a taco?
I think some of the kinks are getting worked out OR some of the "new" of the place has worn out and people aren't trampling down the doors anymore as some friends went last night and said it was really good and their food came out super quick.
Babe's Chicken Dinner House (again), This Time Frisco. vs. Garland
1. Never shared an entree so I don't even know what that rule is.
2. Sweet salad is what they are known for. I didn't like it the first time I tried it but I eat it every time I go know and I like it with some crackers before my meal. I also took some new folks there and explained to them that it was very sweet and anticipated they wouldn't like it but they did.
3. I've always thought their biscuits were good with some butter and honey or gravy with my meal. (You should not have to ask for biscuits though, at the Garland location the waitress brings them when she comes to get your order and introduce herself.)
4. I've had Frisco location twice I believe, and never had a problem but I like the Garland lcoation best. I guess some people just don't like Babe's. It's good to me, probably one of my favorite places to eat in the area. Sorry about your bad experience.
Why isn't there a Trader Joe's in Dallas??
I'm ready for the expansion of Central Market. We need a few more of those sprinkled around the area. Wish there was one close to Firewheel area in Garland.
Best BBQ restaurant in Uptown/Downtown area?
Agreed Meshak's is very good. I think his brisket is worth the trip. I would not recommend the ribs as I don't think there is much meat and you get a much better deal just buying the brisket.
I usually just get a half pound of brisket and hot links and with the white bread he gives you; you have a meal. He only has two sides potato salad and beans; but both are very good.
Also, something to remember is BBQ joints really arent' where you go for dinner. You should be trying to hit them for lunch. Most places start smoking early and are ready for the lunch crowd. If your hitting a place at 5, 6, 7 o'clock at night. The meat has probably been sitting around a while. Not to say it will be bad; just not the "prime" time for getting the best cut of meat.
Good Cajun
Their shrimp and catfish po boys and their fantastic french fries is what I usually get. Definitely one of the top places for a po boy.
Lone Star Park
Anyone ever go out to Lone Star Park? And if so is there anywhere good to eat around there?
I go out a couple times a year and always just eat at the Park (never ate in the Silks Dining upstairs) but the food is pretty average. Just wondered if you knew of anything in the area that's pretty good to hit on the way to the track.
Driving through Dallas, I-35E to I-30 eastbound. Best inexpensive meal?
Sweet Georgia Brown's. Good stuff. Saturday instead of Sunday as it'll be packed on Sunday after church I bet.
Good TX BBQ Joints in Dallas?
It's almost cheaper to eat at a steakhouse than the new Cooper's from reports I'm hearing.
Rusty Taco -- 38 minutes for a taco?
There's a new Taqueria on Belt LIne in Richardson between 75 and Plano Road. It's a shoot off of Amigo's restaurant I believe, it's a couple doors down. I stopped in on Sunday night and ordered three tacos, steak fajita and al pastor they were really good, double corn tortillas (the only way to do it in my opinion) three salsas and some cut up limes. They were only $1.25 each and worth every penny.
Try them out if your up there sometime.
Babe's Roanoke worth the drive?
I live about 3 miles from the Garland location and it's the only one I have ever been to. (And believe me i have been multiple times) It is excellent there are about six entree choices and it's great. I can't believe the one in Roanoake is that much better and worth the drive. Just discussing this makes me hungry.
Looking for a good lunch spot for tomorrow....
Coming in for the South Regional NCAA games and would like to find a good lunch spot. We are driving down from Dallas; so basically anything from Reliant Stadium north is okay for us.
I know I've heard mention of New Zion Missionary BBQ in Huntsville and others. Looking for BBQ, Seafood, Caftish Buffet, Great Mexican, etc.
Any recommendations would be great.
In and Out coming to Big D?
That's a lot like Braum's. You won't find one outside 300 miles (I believe) from Tuttle, Oklahoma because they want to guarantee their products are fresh.

Best po-boy?
Big Easy is quality. Get a big order of fries too, they do a good job with everything and they get the bread right which is really important.

Friday/Saturday visit
Well finished my trip this weekend. Friday on the way down stopped in Taylor and went to Louie Muellers for BBQ. It was perfect. Got there about 1:00 ordered a half pound of brisket, jalapeno sausage link and a beef rib and some potato salad. Everyone was friendly and after everything I heard I was ready for it to fall short but it did not. Great smoky peppery crust on the meat and the brisket and rib were so tender. I thought the jalapeno sausage was amazing; definitely a big difference in a homemade sausage and a mass produced sausage. I would recommend that place to anyone I talk to, one for the history and unique appeal of the location and two for the food. I would go back in a second.
For dinner on Friday night we went to Moonshine. It was okay I would say I also need to make note that i was full from earlier. I only ordered the cheeseburger and it was very good came with steak fries. It was like 10.99 and I'm one that doesn't believe any burger is worth more than 10.00. It was a nice place but not memorable (probably because of what I ordered not the restaurant itself).
Saturday for lunch wanted to go to the Hula Hut but there was a good wait so I went to El Arroyo (just because i had heard of it) I was really disappointed. Tortillas weren't even homemade. Seemed like your average to below average mexican food. I had a combo plate that came with a cheese enchilada and 6 oz steak. It was okay, but forgettable. Definitely wouldn't recommend it.
Saturday night, didn't want to pay for the parking so walked down from the basketball games at UT to Serrano's mexican restaurant (yes mexican food twice in a day). We walked past Brick Oven Pizza and I kind of wish we would have stopped there; however Serrano's appeared to have a nice atmosphere and we wanted to sit outside on the patio. I was impressed with Serrano's; I don't know if it was because of my earlier disappointment in the day with El Arroyo but everything seemed really good. The service was a little lacking, but food wise I was really pleased. I had the fajita enchiladas which were good. Also homemade tortillas, and for some reason as I get older that kind of tells me a restaurant goes the extra mile.
This was my first trip to Austin and I was very impressed with everything I saw and that is hard to say for a diehard Sooner. Hope to get back there soon and try out about a 1,000 other places I saw.
Plano/Richardson Italian Recommendations
Looking for a nice place for Italian in the Richardson/Plano area. I have eaten at several places, but was wondering what your recommendations are.
Seems everyone raves about Covino's in Plano and I had it and thought it was good but not fantastic. Have eaten at Paesano's off of 15th in Plano as well and found it good but not great.
Any hidden gems out there I'm just overlooking?
Friday/Saturday visit
Driving in next Friday afternoon and staying through Sunday. Need to know a couple good places.
I would like something BBQ (might hit Taylor) on the way down coming from Dallas. So that might get my BBQ fix then I will need maybe a mexican recommendation and in Austin BBQ recommendation (have had Stubb's and wasn't impressed) and maybe a late night place or two after the basketball games I could hit for some eats.
Thanks for any suggestions. I've only just driven through Austin and never got to spend any real time so I'm pretty excited.
Will be in the UT area as I'm coming down for the state basketball tournament, in case that helps with recommendations.
Also, maybe a seafood/fish joint; not looking to spend BIG money also. Maybe $20 max per person (poor coaches).
