Good bakery in the South Bay area

Hi all, my hubby's birthday is coming up and I wanted to get him a really nice cake. Could anyone suggest a good bakery in the South Bay area, somewhere around Santa Clara, Mountain View, or Fremont area? Even a cupcake place would be great since he loves cupcakes. Thank you in advance!

Suggestions for Cocktail Party Food

hey lixer, you could use puff pastries as the dough for the samosas. Thats what I had done to make samosas. You can refer to my blog for the recipe.

Food gifts for Zurich friends from northern Calif.

Nuts is a great idea! How about dried fruits like the kind you get at Trader Joe's? Or even Joseph Schmidt truffles? They are excellent. I know they are chocolates, but they are local to Northern CA. Or even gourmet salad dressings. You could get more gourmet food ideas from Williams Sonoma.

Exotic Cheesecake Ideas

I love this thread! I have been thinking about exotic cheesecakes, and I came up with cardamom but you have already tried it! Another great combination would be almond paste with cardamom, or pistachio paste with cardamom and rose. Raspberries with almond paste!

Sweet Treats For Holiday Gift Giving? Need help with ideas...

Could you also share the cranberry orange conserve? I would love to try that one out!

Cooking with fresh ginger

I add fresh ginger and candied ginger to carrot cupcakes, and its delicious!! Its a great combination. Same with carrot soup with ginger.
I add ginger to my tea too, every single day and its amazing! Ginger has amazing digestive properties, hence if you aint feeling too good in the tummy, have some ginger tea!

Vegetarian Sandwiches to Take to Work

My favorite kind of veggie sandwich is: butter on multigrain bread, with lettuce, avacado, tomato, cheddar cheese, and grilled onions with salt and pepper and grill this sandwich on a grill pan with pam spray. It becomes crispy on the outside. Its divine with some chips!

Another favorite is: butter and cilantro mint chutney on wheat bread with sliced tomatoes, cucumber, boiled potato, red onions slices and salt and pepper. It is as tasty as it can get! For the cilantro mint chutney recipe it is on my blog.

Olives, roasted red pepper, parsley, extra virgin olive oil paste like an olive tapenade on a baguette with mozarella, roasted red peppers, grilled zucchini and grilled onions.

India as part of Asia?

Hi Chowhound team, could you make India as part of the Greater Asia chowhound topic places? I had a question about Bombay restaurants, and I am not sure where to ask that!

Thank you!

Vegetarian board

Great suggestion!! I am with you!! It would be great to have a vegetarian board. I am always lost when it comes to good restaurants with good tasty vegetarian food!

Indian Food without fats?

I totally agree with you boogiebaby, the foods in the indian restaurants are loaded with oil and home preparations are much more controlled. Daals are the way to go with some naan. You can tell them about your condition and I am sure they would make preparations with very less oil. They had done that for my dad , who is on a controlled diet as in very less oil, and they made it pretty well with less oil.

At a south indian joint, Idlis are good, light and healthy. A little sambar should be ok. Upma is good too, its light. You can ask them to make the dosa without oil. That can be done too. have tried it at home with pam spray and it works just fine. Good luck! :)

nutella recipes?

hi chowser, could you please point me to the link for this recipe? Appreciate it! the mousse itself sounds so delicious!

What to do with a large bunch of dill?

You can use it to make cucumber dill yogurt dressing. Just take greek yogurt, put in lemon juice, finely chopped dill, grated cucumber(minus the water), salt and pepper. Tastes really good! You can even grind it all to make it into a cucumber dill yogurt dip.

Can I substitute all purpose flour with cake flour?

Yes! It did turn out really tasty! and everyone loved it! but it was not moist enough, according to me. The frosting was yummy! I finally used AP flour, coz I didnt want to mess up the recipe and take a chance. I know that using cake flour, it does turn out fluffy. I am gonna try using cake flour this weekend! thank you all!:)

Can I substitute all purpose flour with cake flour?

Great! Thanks a ton! :)

Can I substitute all purpose flour with cake flour?

I am baking a cake for a dear friend of mine for her birthday, and the recipe calls for all purpose flour. I know that with cake flour the cake turns out light and moist as compared to all purpose flour coz of less gluten. Can I substitute all purpose flour with cake flour, or is there a measure that I need to follow? Appreciate your replies ! :)

Favorite Indian Dish

Hey roasted138! Sure, its funny, I just made it today with garbanzo beans. I will put it up on my blog and let you know once I am done. The one tip that I could give instantly is that once you make any kinda daal, it somehow always tastes better the next day, coz of the flavors encorporating with the lentils.

Favorite Indian Dish

Oh! Gladly! :) Is there any vegetable dish that you particularly like? I could give you a recipe accordingly. Please do let me know and I could put it up on my blog.

masala dosa

Boil 2 small potatoes, once done, cool, peel and dice into small pieces. In a pan, put about 2 teaspoons of vegetable oil. at medium heat and once the oil is hot, put in about 3/4 teapspoon of mustard seeds, let it splatter and crackle. Put in about 1 green chilli and a clode of garlic paste in the oil. Then put in the diced potatoes and saute it for a minute or 2. Put about 1/4 to 1/2 tsp turmeric powder and salt to taste. saute it again. Put about 1 tsp chopped fresh cilantro and you can let it brown a bit if you like it a little crisp. It should be done in about 10 minutes. Hope this helps.
